The year is winding down and it's about that time to start putting our portfolios together. I actually have two portfolios. One is filled with their work from all subject areas, and the other is put together into a booklet to create our Writing Portfolio. Here are pics from the past couple years. I definitely love using the large, 2 gallon ziploc bags. They fit everything perfectly and their work stays neat and tidy on the way home. Here is last year's writing portfolio: I absolutely love teaching little ones to write. It is honestly my favorite subject to teach. I LOVE to hear them squeal with delight when I say that we will start a new writing piece today. I love the anticipation they have as I start to share my own personal story at the start of each mini-lesson. I can see their little minds turning as I'm passing out their writing paper. LOS DIÁLOGOS EN LAS NOVELAS En algunas novelas hay más narración que diálogos y en otras sucede lo contrario. A mí me gustan mucho los diálogos. Lo considero una buena herramienta para dar a conocer los personajes a los lectores. A través del diálogo y sus pensamientos muestran su carácter, sus temores, deseos, dudas, etcétera. ¿Cuántas veces, sobre todo en la novela romántica, un personaje se cohíbe y no manifiesta sus verdaderos sentimientos pero el lector/a los conoce a través del pensamiento del personaje? ¿Cuán enriquecedor puede ser un diálogo bien hecho? La narración puede centrarse en los pensamientos, en las descripciones del mundo que rodea a los personajes, en las acciones pero es en el diálogo donde los personajes interactúan y aportan mucha información, además de entretenimiento para el lector. Ejemplo de diálogo extraído de mi novela "La protegida del Vampiro" "─Los sacerdotes no frecuentamos fiestas de ese tipo ─comentó el padre César cuando Víctor le comunicó la invitación durante la cena. ─Estoy seguro de que no habrá excesos en esa fiesta. Además, vos queríais conocer a la familia. ¿Qué mejor momento hay antes de regresar a Orense? ─¡Id a la fiesta, padre! ─exclamó Miguel─. Es posible que encontréis a algún vampiro escondido ─sonrió burlón. ─Os aseguro que eso no tendría nada de extraño ─replicó molesto el sacerdote─. He observado que ambos lucís un medallón exactamente igual. ─Así es ─asintió Víctor─. Se lo regalé yo. ─¿Representa algo especial? Lo normal sería que vos ─miró a Víctor─ llevaseis un crucifijo. ─Representa nuestra amistad. Cuando oficio misas, suelo llevar un crucifijo. ─Creo recordar haber visto un medallón similar ─comentó pensativo. ─Existen cinco medallones como éste ─dijo Víctor". Aunque la escritura debe ser libre, pues es una manifestación de nuestra manera de entender el arte, hay unas pautas que se pueden seguir, y son recomendables sobre todo para quienes empiezan a escribir y tienen dudas de enfrentarse a un diálogo entre los personajes de su novela. He aquí algunas normas para los diálogos: Conoce tu personaje: Ya lo he comentado en otras entradas. Hay que conocer bien a nuestros personajes para saber qué dirían en una determinada situación y, sobre todo, cómo lo dirían. De hecho, esta parte la considero sumamente importante. No es lo mismo que un personaje hable en el siglo XXI, a que lo haga en la época Victoria, por ejemplo. Las maneras de hacerlo son muy diferentes y no tenerlo en cuenta empobrece la historia. He visto alguna novela en la que se ha escapado alguna expresión demasiado “moderna” para la época y no me ha gustado nada. Interpreta su papel: Imagínate que tú eres el personaje y así sabrás qué podrías decir ante una determinada situación. Y, si puedes, no lo personalices. No eres tú haciendo de detective, cortesana, galán, princesa, etc. Es tu personaje haciendo algo. Así que, por mucho que las historias tengan una parte de nosotros, creo que una novela ficticia no debe ser una extensión de nuestra personalidad, si no buscamos novelar alguna experiencia personal, por supuesto. En una ocasión conocí a alguien que escribía novela romántica y las protagonistas (no lo observé solo yo) siempre actuaban igual, y eran un reflejo de la personalidad de ella. En algún momento, puede estar bien pero los lectores, sobre todo si te conocen personalmente, lo consideran un error. Es como si escribieras tu sueño una y otra vez y (creo que) nadie quiere imaginarse al/a protagonista como una copia del/a escritor/a. En diferentes páginas webs he leído que aconsejan que hables en voz alta los diálogos para comprobar si son creíbles. La verdad, no me imagino a un/a escritor/a consagrado haciendo esto. No creo que lo necesite. Pero cada cual que encuentre su propio camino. Rompe los diálogos con acción: Mientras dialogan nuestros personajes, también pueden hacer algo para dar dinamismo a la escena. Es posible que estén sentados, pero pueden moverse en la silla porque se sienten incómodos con la conversación. Tal vez tomen alguna bebida, comida o vean pasar algo por la calle que les llama la atención. No expliques lo que ya se da por explicado a través de la acción, avanza: Si ya hemos explicado una situación, sentimiento a través de la narración, no deberíamos repetirnos, aunque yo opino que, a veces, es necesario remarcar o recordar un hecho importante a través del diálogo, sobre todo en las novelas largas y complejas. Interrumpe, de vez en cuando: No convirtamos los diálogos en monólogos. Cuando un personaje habla, el otro u otros pueden interrumpirlo con preguntas, comentarios. Como haríamos en la vida misma. Haz que importe: Es decir, que el diálogo está escrito porque lo consideras importante dentro de la narración para, por ejemplo, dar a entender que un personaje cambia de opinión, se cuestiona algo, etc. Si son conversaciones que se pueden prescindir, hazlo. Cuando corregí mi novela: “El dolor de Roberto Gaite”, he suprimido muchos diálogos de este tipo que pueden considerarse “paja”. Utiliza dinamismo en el lenguaje escrito: Si puedes, procura que las frases sean cortas y sencillas. Aunque, según mi opinión, esto depende de la novela. Tal vez, en la narrativa actual se lleve ser económico en el uso del lenguaje, a diferencia de las novelas de otras épocas, donde la narrativa y los diálogos eran más profundos, largos y espesos. No te pases con los “dijo”: Yo lo hacía mucho cuando empecé a escribir. Es más, escribía: “dijo él”, “dijo ella”. En mi ignorancia estaba convencida de que el/la lector/a no se iba a enterar de quién estaba hablando en las escenas de la novela. Y, salvo que esté mal narrada la historia, es fácil entender quién es la voz activa en cada momento. El lenguaje no verbal: Es importante que los personajes se manifiesten con gestos, acciones, el tono de voz. Es un mensaje que también aporta información a los otros personajes que forman parte de la conversación y a los lectores. En mis novelas, los personajes se miran mucho a los ojos, sobre todo cuando entre ellos hay un sentimiento profundo, aunque no lo admitan. Y son esos pequeños gestos o el tono de voz el que indica su estado de ánimo, definen su carácter. El lenguaje no debe imitar a la realidad: Los diálogos en las novelas no son como los diálogos que tenemos en la realidad, al menos es lo que he leído como consejo en diferentes páginas web y blogs. Aunque también he leído lo contrario. Supongo que dependerá de la época en la que se desarrolla la acción. Por ello, insisto, que se debe tener en cuenta la época en la que se mueven los personajes. Si están en el siglo XV, tal vez no escribiremos en castellano antiguo para que se nos entienda (salvo que lo prefiramos), pero sí debemos tener en cuenta que tampoco podemos hacer que nuestros personajes hablen como si estuviesen en medio de un parque del siglo XXI. Hay expresiones que debemos respetar. Tal vez debamos tratarlos con el pronombre “vos” (acompañado de la forma verbal correspondiente), en vez de “usted” o “tú”. En incluso “usted” sea más correcto que “tú” aunque los personajes sean de la misma edad si tenemos en cuenta el formalismo que imperaba en determinadas épocas. Por último insistiré en el consejo que nunca falla: leer. A través de la lectura de todo tipo de novelas, y de todos los tiempos, podremos aprender y mejorar nuestra narrativa.
