Today's lesson is Esther and is divided into two parts. She is made queen this week, and we will have a feast next week! We act this lesson out, so there is not a craft. But there is a worksheet and Bible verse. When King Ahasuerus (AKA Xerxes) had been king for three years, he had a feast for his officials and servants. He showed them how great his kingdom was. It lasted 180 days! When that feast was over, he had another feast that lasted seven days. His queen, Queen Vashti, had a feast for the women in the royal palace. On the seventh day, the king was feeling happy and told some men to bring in Queen Vashti to him, wearing her crown, so he could show his friends how beautiful she was. The queen refused to go to the king, and he was angry! Nobody refuses the king! King Ahasuerus asked his wise men what he should do for this insult. They told him that she not only wronged the king, but the princes and the people. Her refusal would be known to all the women in the province, and they will look down on their husbands. They told the king to make a new decree. If the queen would not come to the king, then the king would give her royal position to another that deserves it more. So, King Ahasuerus sent out letters to the provinces in their own languages. The king’s servants gathered all the beautiful young women for the king to choose a new queen. Mordecai was raising his cousin (his uncle’s daughter [2:7]), Esther, because her parents had been killed. She was beautiful. She was taken with the other women for the king to see, and he liked her. King Ahasuerus moved her to the best place for the women in the palace. But she did not tell the king about her people. Mordecai had told her not to mention that her family was Jewish. Every day Mordecai walked in front of where the women were so he could learn how Esther was. It took the women a whole year to get ready to go before King Ahasuerus! Once a woman went before the king, she couldn’t go before him again, unless HE called for her by name. Now, in the seventh year (4 years later) of his reign, Esther gets to go before the king again. The king loved her more than all the other women. (Esther 2:16) King Ahasuerus put the crown on her head and made her the queen, instead of Vashti. He made a great feast and called it “Feast of Esther”. After a time, when Mordecai was sitting out by the gate, he overheard two of the king’s doorkeepers talking. They were angry at the king and wanted to kill him. Mordecai told Queen Esther about this, and she told King Ahasuerus what Mordecai had told her. When an investigation was done, they were both hanged! After that, Haman was made second in command to the king. When Haman walked in the king’s gate, everyone bowed to him…except for Mordecai. This made Haman so angry, and when he found out that Mordecai was a Jew, Haman decided to kill all the Jews! Haman talked King Ahasuerus into making a new decree to kill the Jews for not keeping the king’s laws. Haman told King Ahasuerus their laws were different, and it wasn’t right to have their own laws. King Ahasuerus gave his signet ring to Haman so he could write a new decree which they sent out into the provinces. I set up one wall to look like a palace. This build-a-scene is Disney princess, but there are others to choose from. When I started doing this lesson years ago, I just threw blankets on chairs and a table to make the throne. The kids love it, and it doesn't have to be extravagant. As the kids come in, I let them pick who they want to be. We filled these in during this part of the lesson. It can be anything, fun or serious. You can print these in color or black & white to put on color paper. We talked about it taking a year to go before the king. The kids took necklaces and rings to 'prepare' themselves to see the king. The boys even like doing this! Things to know for next week! The king will remember that Mordecai saved his life, and Haman will be even more angry at Mordecai. We talked about not being permitted to see the king, unless he asks to see you, and that is an important part of Queen Esther's work for next week. We will finish Queen Esther next week. Esther is one of the most beloved Biblical heroines, a woman who became queen under extraordinary circumstances and saved her people from destruction through her faith and courage. But what of the queen she replaced? Relegated to a few lines of text, Queen Vashti is often framed in a negative light or forgotten. However, if […]

We love studying Esther! This is a set of Magnetic Board Visuals with a different twist! The directions are below. Cathy uses these visuals with a magnetic board. She cuts the pieces out, numbers them on the back, laminates them and adds thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first, then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. They can also be used as visuals alone, a flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. As you teach Esther, begin by adding the gold crown. These are numbered, and the first gold/yellow states "God". Add the purple next to it when talking about God not being mentioned in the book of Esther. Each gold crown has a word or words, and the matching numbered purple has an explanation for the lesson. Click here to download the visuals. Cathy Whitacre is a Christian, wife, mother, Nana, sister, and friend. I love teaching Esther! The kids really enjoy learning about her, too! Review: We started our study last week about Esther. She went before King Ahasuerus, and he loved her. Esther became his queen. Haman (the king's second in command) talked the king into making a new law that would kill Esther's people, the Jews! Lesson found in the book of Esther: The Jews mourned this new law, especially Mordecai. Queen Esther was very upset when she heard and sent one of her men to ask Mordecai why this happened. Mordecai explained everything and asked for Queen Esther to go before King Ahasuerus and plead with him for her people. Except that everyone knew that there was a law about going into the inner court to see the king. If King Ahasuerus did not hold out his scepter to you, you would die. Queen Esther had not been called to see the king for a month. Queen Esther told Mordecai to have all the Jews fast (not eat or drink) for three days. She would also do this with her maids. And then … she would go into the king, and if he didn’t hold out the scepter, she would die. On the third day, she put on her robes and when King Ahasuerus saw her, he held out his scepter! She went close to the scepter and touched it. Think about how she had to be feeling. Her heart had to be racing and she had to be scared, but she did it! King Ahasuerus asked her “What do you wish, Queen Esther? Anything you want, up to half of the kingdom, I will give to you.” She asked if the king and Haman would come to a banquet that she has made ready for today. King Ahasuerus called Haman to come quickly, and they went to the banquet. While they ate, King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther what her petition was. Queen Esther replied to King Ahasuerus that she would like them to come to a banquet again the next day. Haman went home that night and bragged to his wife and friends about his position with the king and his power. Haman told them about how Queen Esther had a banquet just for him and the king! But he told them “I just can’t stand to see that Jew, Mordecai, sitting at the king’s gate not bowing down to me.” Haman's wife and friends suggested that he build gallows and hang Mordecai on it. Haman liked the idea, so he started building it. That night, King Ahasuerus couldn’t sleep, so he had the records book brought to him. He read about Mordecai saving him from the two gate keepers that had planned to kill him. King Ahasuerus asked his servants what had been done as a thank you and they told him nothing. Haman had just come to the court, so King Ahasuerus told him to enter. The king asked Haman “What should be done to honor someone that helped the king?” Haman told King Ahasuerus that the person should be permitted to wear royal robes while riding on a horse that the king had ridden and wear a crown. Then, parade him around in the city telling everyone that “The king is honoring this man!” Haman thought this would be for him, but King Ahasuerus told Haman to find Mordecai and do this for him! Even worse, Haman was the one that had to lead the horse and tell everyone that this man (Mordecai) is being honored by King Ahasuerus! Haman was so upset! And then, right when Haman had finished showing off Mordecai, Haman was told to go to the next banquet with the king and queen. So again, during this banquet, King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther what she wanted, up to half of the kingdom. Queen Esther told King Ahasuerus “If I have found favor with you, please spare me and my people.” The king asked her who would dare to do such a thing, and she told the king " The wicked man is Haman." King Ahasuerus was so angry, he went to the garden to think and while he was in the garden, Haman begged the Queen Esther to save him. Haman fell across the couch just when King Ahasuerus came back in and that made the king even angrier! King Ahasuerus shouted, “Now you will attack my queen also?” One of the servants saw the gallows and told King Ahasuerus they were being built for Mordecai, so the king said, “Hang Haman on it!” So, they hanged Haman instead! King Ahasuerus gave Mordecai his signet ring and gave him Haman’s position (remind them it was second in command after the king.) And Queen Esther once again went to see the king. King Ahasuerus held out his scepter and she explained about the law Haman had made about killing the Jews. King Ahasuerus told Mordecai to "Write out a new law and seal it with my signet ring so that no one else can change the law and save your people." And that document was sent out into all the provinces. And these things that happened were written in the king’s books and Queen Esther and Mordecai was well liked and considered great among the people. (Esther 10:3) I set up one wall to look like a palace. I covered a regular chair with blankets for the king & queen. I set up a table between the chairs (which is actually the plastic tub with Esther supplies in it) and covered that with fabric. I handed out necklaces and rings for Esther getting ready to see the king, and everyone took home a crown. I kept up the king & queen area but added tables for the banquet! There are tables with tablecloths, glasses and [gold] dishes to hold the feast that Esther might have had. Cheese, crackers, lots of fruit, water bottles, etc. They love anytime they get food in class! Watch for those allergies, though. We made the gold scepters for the king. Each student took one home with them! Click on the picture to see the original post with the directions with how to make these. Click here to download today's worksheet. Have you ever come across someone that just despises the very air you breath and the ground you walk on ? Well we are going to look at 3 people, 2 are Godly and one, not so much ! We are going to be looking at some Scriptures in the book of Esther to see the shortened version of how these 3 people crossed paths and what were their individual outcomes. First we'll look at Mordecai who was a relative of Esther's who took her in when her parents both died Esther 2:7. She was no plain Jane as we would say, she was beautiful, inside and outside. Now there came a day when the current Queen Vashti upset the King by not coming to one of his feasts and made one for herself and other women Esther 1:9 -12. This was told to the King and he was also reminded that the refusal of the Queen to attend the Kings function would become known to all and he would be humiliated in the kingdom. Also other noble women would decide not to listen to their husbands and this will incite discord in the realm. So a decree went out that Vashti would no longer be the Queen and they were to search for another to take her place Esther 1:17 - 22 To fast forward beautiful Esther was brought to the King to see if she was the one and she pleased him and he made her his Queen. Now Esther was a Jew and so was Mordecai, but her heritage was kept a secret and it was not told to the King. Esther 2:9 - 10 Now comes in Haman, not a very nice man at all but the King must have liked him because in Esther 3:1 the King promoted Haman and all the Kings servants bowed down and paid homage to Haman, all except Mordecai. This would go against GOD's law no bowing down or giving homage to anyone other than the ONE TRUE GOD. Days went by and they kept insisting that he bow before Haman, but Mordecai would not. Esther 3: 1 - 6. Now Haman was afraid to lay hands on Mordecai so he hatched an evil plot to destroy him, through the complete destruction of a people, the Jews. So he brought the decree to the King and the King signed the decree. Remember he did not know that his own new and beautiful Esther was one of the Jews and neither did Haman. Now when the decree went out into all the provinces, there was great mourning among the Jews with fasting and Mordecai, along with many of the Jew, tore their cloths and put on sackcloth and ashes. Esther 3:7 - 4:3. To fast forward, Haman had a huge gallows built to hang Mordecai on and it was visible from the palace and Haman's home. He thought that he had finally got the upper hand over this Mordecai that would not pay him the respect that he thought he deserved. Just think of it, a single persons hatred for another person,Haman was willing to have an entire nation destroyed because of his hatred for Mordecai. Now there was a law that forbid the Queen to come into the King unless he calls for her. Well Mordecai told Esther that she had to go in and plead for her people, and she said that the King had not called her and if she went in and he did not put out his scepter for her to enter, she would be killed. Now I will tell you that I am leaving a lot out and it would be good if you would read the entire book to fill in some of the blanks. Esther Chapter 4 was the discussion of Mordecai with Esther and vss. 12 thru 17 are quite useful for us today in our attitude to our Christian walk. The verses are as follows: Then Mordecai told them to answer Esther. " Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the King's palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this ? " Then Esther told them to return this answer to Mordecai: Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the King, which is against the law, and if I perish, I perish !" Then Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther commanded him. Now there was a little known thing that Mordecai had done that was only known by the King's historian. Mordecai had heard of a plot to kill the King at the beginning of the book of Esther. The plot was foiled but Mordecai had not taken any credit nor was he ever rewarded for this heroic act. Just keep that in the back of your mind, because wicked Haman was about to get his. As I said, you really need to read the entire story to fill in the rest of the important info that I am skipping over, and I don't like to do that, but I am trying to make a specific point. Many things transpired and Queen Esther was given the scepter to allow her entry into the King and she had 2 private parties with the King, wicked Haman and herself. During the 2nd feast with the King and Haman, Esther broke down in Chapter 7:1 - 10 and told the King that her people and herself were being destroyed by the wicked plot of Haman and Haman was taken out and hanged on the gallows that was meant for Mordecai, and Mordecai was given Haman's house because of his relationship to the Queen. BUT there was still a problem, once the King put his signet on any decree it could not be undone, so they came up with another decree that basically said that " In every city where the Jews lived that they were allowed to band together and defend their lives against anyone who would try to kill them Esther 8:11 - 17 and because of this decree many gentiles were converted as proselytes to the Jews so that they would not kill them. As I said, I hate to skip or run through GOD's WORD and not write it all down, but my point in this post is to show the difference between Haman's god and the GOD of Mordecai and Esther. Haman's god was himself, he wanted all the praise and honor for himself and because of this he put an entire nation of the Jews in jeopardy and he lost his life and eternity for him was sealed in the flames of hell. But the GOD of Mordecai and Esther was watching out for the Jews and would not allow them to be annihilated. Esther, in her selflessness, came into the King when she had not been called for, at great risk to her life. And as she said, " If I perish, I perish !" This is the same kind of selfless love our LORD and SAVIOR has for us. When GOD the FATHER sent GOD the SON, JESUS CHRIST down to earth, to eventually die on a Roman cross for the sin of all mankind, even for wicked Haman's and for your sin and mine, HIS love was complete. It covered all sin from the sin of Adam to the last person who will be born at the end of time, whomever that may be. But as a sinner you need to take responsibility that you as a sinner have no way of saving yourself and need the SAVIOR's forgiveness. As the Jews above, could do nothing to save themselves from wicked Haman's murderous plot against them, we have no way of saving ourselves from the debt that we owe for our sin. JESUS came and died on the cross, was buried and rose from the dead on the 3rd day, to pay our sin debt. If you believe that you are a sinner and need the SAVIOR's forgiveness, bow your head in prayer, and believe that JESUS came and died for your sin. Ask JESUS to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart and life and save you. HE WILL, HE will never turn a seeking heart away !!! Your servant in CHRIST, Julie
