VERSES: Genesis 29:1-30 MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 29:20 "...and they seemed unto him but a few days for the love he had to her." BOOK TO REMEMBER: 2 Chronicles. Write "2 Chronicles" on slips of paper and hand out to students at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray safe journeys for all those traveling to and from Bible class. Be thankful for families. SPECIAL SONG: The Old Testament Books (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog). VISUAL AID: Folded Picture (Make a larger Activity-see below for directions) LESSON POINTS: Last week we left Jacob travelling back to his father, Isaac's, homeland, Haran. Remember Jacob's dream? The angels were going up and down the ladder in his dream! Jacob kept traveling and finally came into an eastern land. He saw a well out in the field with flocks of sheep lying by it. This was a well that had a great big rock covering the opening of the well. When all of the sheep arrived by the well, they uncovered the well and let the sheep drink, then they rolled the stone back on top. Jacob walked up to the well and asked the men who were with the sheep, "Where are you from?" Do you know what they said? Haran! That's where Jacob was going! Jacob asked them if they knew Laban and they said yes! They knew him! Jacob asked if Laban was well and they said that he was well and his daughter, Rachel, was bringing up the sheep! While Jacob was talking to the shepherds about watering the sheep, Rachel came up with her father's sheep and Jacob rolled back the stone on the well and watered the flock. Jacob kissed Rachel and, because he was so happy, tears fell from his eyes! Jacob told her that he was Laban's nephew and Rebekah's son. Rachel ran to tell her father the news that Jacob was there at the well. When Laban heard that Jacob was at the well, he ran to meet him and hugged him and kissed him and took him to his house and Jacob stayed there a month. Now, Laban had two daughters. The oldest daughter's name was Leah, and the youngest daughter was named Rachel. Leah was "tender-eyed" or her eyes were pretty, but Rachel was beautiful and everyone liked her. After a while, Laban asked Jacob what he should get paid for all the work he was doing for him. Jacob loved Rachel and he said, "I will work for you seven years for Rachel, your youngest daughter to marry her." Laban agreed and Jacob worked hard for seven years to get to marry Rachel. Let's turn to Genesis 29:20 and see how Jacob felt about all that work. (Read verse.) Let's put our bookmark right here. How did Jacob feel about working seven years for his wife? All those years seemed like no time at all because Jacob loved Rachel! Jacob worked hard for one year, for two years, for three years, for four years, for five years, for six years, and for SEVEN years and finally Jacob told Laban, "OK. My seven years is up. Now I get to marry Rachel." Laban threw a huge feast that lasted a whole week. Back in those days, when the bride got married, she had a veil over her face and you couldn't really see her face at all. So they got married and the next day, Jacob discovered that it wasn't Rachel who he married! It was her older sister Leah!! Jacob found Laban and said, "What have you done to me!! Did I not work for you seven year for Rachel? Why have you tricked me?" Laban answered and said, "In our country, the older daughter must be married first before the younger ones can be married. Go through this week and I will give you Rachel for a wife as well, if you will work for me seven more years." Jacob agreed and then received Rachel as a bride as well, but still had to work another SEVEN years for her. How many years that he work for Rachel all together? FOURTEEN years! That's a lot of work!! "Older Student" Tips: Talk about how in the beginning it was Jacob who was the 'trickster' or the one who tricked his father, Isaac, for the blessing and now...he is the one being tricked. Discuss how getting married in different lands can be quite different than the country in which we live. ACTIVITY: Folded Picture Materials needed: white typing paper, crayons, scissors. The Bible teacher or the student can fold a paper lengthwise and cut along the folded edge to create papers for two students. Folding carefully, make edges meet in the middle and fold. (See picture above.) Open the paper flat. Draw Jacob on one side near the edge pointing outside. Draw Rachel the same way. (See picture below.) Draw the well in the middle and the sheep all around, completing with green hills. (See picture below). Turn paper over and draw "14 years" in the middle of the paper. (See picture below.) Fold the paper so that Jacob and Rachel meet in the middle (See picture at the top of this page.)

I have a new Minute To Win It game. It's a New Testament version. Just click on the picture to check it out. In Seminary this year we are studying the Old Testament. For our Christmas party I thought that it would be fun to have a review of the year so far with Minute to Win it games. Here is what I came up with. I gave each team 5 apples and had them do their best to stack them. The team who had the most apples stacked at one minute won. You could also have a person from each team eat an apple and the person who eats most of the apple wins. For this one you will need 2 jars and a bunch of plastic animals. I taped a picture of Noah's Ark to the outside. Each person puts the jar by their feet. While standing straight each person tries to drop an animal into the jar from their nose. The teams that has the most animals is the jar at one minute wins. Each team is given a stack of cups. The team who has the tallest tower at one minute wins. For this one you will need 2 empty tissue boxes, 2 belts and 16 ping pong balls. Put slits on the two sides of the tissue box to slip the belt through. Fill each tissue box with 8 ping pong balls. Each person playing ties the belt around his waist with the box in the back. They both have one minute to dance around until all of the ping pong balls (seeds) have been bounced out of the tissue box. For this you will need 2 straws, 40 marshmallows, and two plates. Each person will have one minutes to get 20 marshmallows (sheep) into the plate (the pen) with the straw. For this challenge you will need 10 3"x 14" pieces of poster board and about 40 cups. Give each player 5 pieces of poster board and a stack of cups. Each player builds a ladder with the poster board for rungs. The team with the tallest ladder wins. Each team gets a copy of Joseph's coat to color. They have one minute to color it on their head. Each player must use at least five colors. The team is allowed to give advice on how to color in the lines. The team that does the best job wins. This one I did not end up doing. Here's how it could be done. You will need 20 old Bibles. Each team will have one member help another team member stack 5 Bibles in each hand. Then they will have to walk across the room with all 10 Bibles without dropping them. The team that gets all 10 Bibles across the room first wins. This challenge is in reference to Deuteronomy 33:17. Give each team a bag of Honeycomb cereal. Each team will have one member lie down on the ground while another team member stacks the honeycomb cereal, one on top of the other, to look like a unicorn horn. The team that has the tallest horn wins (without cheating). For this challenge you will need to print out two pictures of the brick wall below onto cardstock. Fold the cardstock in half like a card. Place the cards at one end of the table. Both teams have a member blow the card across the table and then try to get the card to hang off the edge without falling off. If the card falls off then they have to start all over. Bounce a ping pong ball at least twice to knock over Goliath. The first person to do it in under a minute wins. Here's a printout for you to use. For the Champions I made these trophies out of Toblerone. Just print out the picture below. Cut it out and glue it to the top of a Toblerone. The students loved it. This is lesson five in a 13-week series that I used in my class. I wanted one quarter to introduce the Old Testament with a basic timeline of the people and events. The students can learn what happened in the Old Testament and how those events lead to Jesus. These lessons are a combination of the Life Overview Series and other lessons. They have been updated and tweaked since I taught these. I will show you what I used to blend several posts into 13 lessons. It was basically pick and choose and you can change any to fit your needs. This lesson teaches about Joseph in Genesis. The lesson explains the Big Picture. I used Cathy’s visual with Joseph’s Coat and updated it to make it easier to use. Keep in mind these lessons are slightly longer with very different application reviews. I updated Cathy's coat visual. I rearranged the pieces so they are placed in order instead of random on the coat. I updated the lesson slightly to my style and for a couple of the pieces that I changed. If you prefer not to make the coat visual, this file has updated visuals and the adapted lesson outline. I print my visuals on cardstock, and tape each section of the lesson to the back. The dreams are interesting to discuss and this worksheet will help the students remember who dreamed it. They just draw a line from the name to the correct dream. Some have more than one dream. There is an answer sheet with scriptures included. Click here to download. I designed this file folder game for the Life of Joseph. The (left) money bag is the cover and can be printed in color or black & white onto color paper. The (right) inside has the numbered 'coins' for the student to put Joseph's life in order. It can be used to review or discuss his life. The top is for the students and the bottom is the completed set for teacher's visual or if you want to use it already done. There is a list of answers with scripture if you want to make a lesson using this. This is designed so that if you prefer to cut out the bag... you can. It is a lot more work, but it can be done. Glue the cover on the file folder and cut it out (both sides of the file folder). Then, glue the inside on. The silver coins are 2" circles. I purchased a punch to make it (so much) easier and perfect. Click here to see the punch. Here are some hints to make it easier to use a punch: For this type of use, I remove the safety shield on the bottom. They usually slide or pop off easily to clean. I cut each strip pretty close (about 1/4") from the circle (but not on the circle). Turn the punch upside down and insert the picture (as shown) inside so you can place it perfect in the punch area to be cut. Squeeze and you have a perfect easy circle! The silver coin pictures can be kept in a sandwich bag, an envelope or these library pockets. You can find these just about anywhere. Craft stores, Dollar Tree and teacher supply stores. I plan to reuse these with future classes, so I did not glue the pocket onto the file folder. They can be Velcroed, but it is hard for the students to get them out of the pocket, so I keep them in a storage bag. Keep in mind, you can use the circle punch to cut circles from gray or silver cardstock for other lessons with silver coins. Click here to download the file folder game. Even though we studied Jesus and Acts after this quarter, rather than removing any pictures, I printed those pictures already on the page along with a couple that we wouldn't have as it's own lesson. The original file has a teacher's visual completed. and a student file folder without any pictures on the timeline. All pictures will need to be cut and glued or made into stickers to use. Today I had a ton of fun making a Books of the Bible Lapbook. Print out all your pieces. Assemble the accordion books. Attach the cover to the front of the lapbook. How it looks when you first open it up. Bible notes on the left hand flap. Bible vocabulary on the right hand flap. The beginning part of the Old Testament books on the first insert. Under the Bible notes tabs. Just a close up of the first set of pockets. The accordion books are folded up. The match book vocabulary can be either written in or pasted in. Turn the first insert page over and here are the remaining pockets etc... for the OT. Then we have a 400 years separation note stuck to the bottom part of the page. Turning to the middle we start the NT pockets. And continue over for the remainder. How it looks when both inserts are open. On the back of the right hand insert. A full listing of the books of the Bible. Yes, so that's it. It is quite a project, and I suggest doing it in small parts as a child learns the Books of the Bible by rote memory.
