You probably know that I LOVE making low-prep activities with materials I already have. I've started sharing round ups of low-prep activities I've made in hopes that I can inspire other teachers to spend less time & money prepping activities. Making math activities doesn't have to take a ton of time and definitely shouldn't cost you money. If you want tips for making low-prep math centers, check out this post! Here are some of my favorite low-prep counting activities: Roll a number, roll it in play-doh and then smash it! Say the number & count it with links Pick a card, say the number & count it Roll a number & count it Counting with mini-erasers

In kindergarten I think it is so important for students to have concrete understanding of numbers. I love to teach math in a very hands on manner, giving students to opportunity to count real objects. Most students in my class begin without having any number sense so I always begin with the very basics. These are a few of my favorite ways to teach number sense in kindergarten. Identifying and Writing Numbers Quiz Quiz Trade My school is very into Kagan strategies and cooperative learning and we played quiz quiz trade to practice identifying our numbers. Each students begins with a card. They find a partner, quiz their partner what number they have. Their partner does the same for them and they trade cards and then find a new partner. It is great to get your students moving and I always see so much engagement! I love playing teaching this game early in the year because we use it for so many concepts as the year goes on but it is important to teach and review expectations with students when playing this game. Playdoh Numbers We also practiced making the numbers out of playdoh. What 5 year old doesn't love using playdoh!?!? I would say a number and the students would make that number. We can then trace it with our fingers. Sand Writing A fun and quick small group or intervention warm up is sand writing. I use pencil cases to store my sand. They are keep enough that they won't cause a lot of sand falling out. This is a multi-sensory activity that your students will love. You can either just say a number, pick a ten frame or roll a dice. For this activity, we were working on number to ten so I used a dice with numbers 1-10. I had the student roll a dice, tell me what number it was, and then write it in the sand. Race to the Board My students loved playing race to the board to practice identifying numbers. To prep this game, I have numbers 1-20 on two sides, one for each team. I glue the numbers on butcher paper and that is our game board. I prep it once and then I am able to use it all year long. I play this game with a little twist to get all of my students involved. Instead of just saying a number, I stand behind my two students who are racing to the board, so they cannot see, and show the whole class a quantity on a tens frame. The whole class would shout out the number that I was showing and then two students would run to the board to find that number. This gave the students practice identifying amounts on a tens frame as well as identifying numbers. Although at the beginning of the year we only focus on the numbers 1-10, I have the numbers 1-20 on my chart because I use it throughout the year for different math activities and this just made it easier for me. Hidden Numbers This was a fun partner activity for students. Each group of students received numbers strip to 10 and 4 mini erasers (like the ones you get from Target Dollar Spot) The one partner closed their eyes, while the other partner placed the erasers on numbers to make them "hidden." The partner then opened their eyes and identified the numbers that were hiding. Number Jam To teach number identification and writing, I am in love with number songs.... It has helped so many of my students correctly form the numbers. You can listen to it by clicking on the link below. I love using it as our number warm up. I play the song and the students write the number on their white boards (or shaving cream) while listening to the music. Concrete Represention of Numbers Ordering Numbers: This is a fun partner activity. I give each group of students numbers 1-5 and cubes. There is 1 cube of 1 color, 2 cubes of a different color, 3 cubes of another color, etc. The students order the numbers, sort the cubes and match them to a number. It is a quick and fun hands on activity for them. Various Representation of Numbers This was such a simple, yet effective small group or center activity that I did with my students.I found several objects in the classroom that they could use to show numbers. We used number cards, counters, dice, dominos and magetic letters. I simply placed them in a basket and the students would sort the numbers 1-6, showing it in different ways. Counting Containers I found these cute little containers and stickers at Dollar Tree and I knew it would be an activity that my students would love. They simply choose a container, identified that number, and then I had them use fine motor tweezers (Amazon Affiliate Link) to count out that many pom poms. This proved to be so helpful because it slowed them down with their counting. Counting Activities Grab and Count: This activity was a favorite by my students. It was so easy to differentiate, since depending on what number we were working on, I changed the size of the pom poms that were used. I used larger pom poms for students who were working to 5 (so less would fit into their scoopers), and smaller as they learned up to the teen numbers. Students grabbed pom poms using scooper (Amazon Affiliate Link). They then counted how many they had. If necessary, I had my students use a number strip or tens frame for support. They can also write the number on a white board of recording sheet. Counting Jars These are another favorite of mine to practice counting. I have several old baby food jars with letters that I wrote on the tops There is also a recording page with these letters for students to record their answers. I put different objects in each of the jars... pom poms, erasers, pennies, etc and students practice counting the objects and recording their answer. This is also another game that is so easy to both use throughout the year and to differentiate. It is so easy to switch out the objects in the baby jars so if students are more able, you can put in more objects. More Abstract Representation Number Sorts: We then transitioned to number sorts up to 10. I love using these, because although the students don't realize it yet, it is exposing them to so many different representations of the numbers by using dice, dominos, tens frames, etc. We introduced these sorts whole group and then they became a math center activity for my students. Individual Number Sorts: To check my students understanding, I also had them complete number sorts for each number. This allowed me to see how may need some extra support. They counted and sorted examples and non examples of each of the number. You can find these pocket chart sort and student sorts in my TPT store by clicking here: Number Sorts I hope you enjoying seeing different number and counting activities that I do in my classroom. What are some fun activities that you use to teach number sense?

What exactly is one to one correspondence, and how do we teach it to preschool and kindergarten students? Here's your guide all about one to one correspondence!
Happy Monday! I'm dedicating a post to some of my favorite things - teacher clothes and anchor charts! When I first started this blog, I had hoped to do some style posts. Teacher clothes are a beautiful and complicated thing - trying to look fashionable yet accommodate standing up all day/bending down/sitting criss cross on the floor etc. Here's what I wore + my style inspiration (J's Everyday Fashion): Top: Express, Pants: Target (old), Flats: Steve Madden via DSW I'm pretty proud of myself on matching this look. Please ignore my shadowy background vs. this obviously professional blogger look. I definitely could use more accessories, but that's my big goal for my next paycheck. I'm lusting after tons of gorgeous jewels at Stella & Dot. Their Spring 2014 line just came out today! As far as this outfit for teacher wear, it was perfect! I love Express portofinos for school because the v-neck feels feminine without being too revealing and the shirts are insanely comfortable. They're a little pricey, but well worth the quality! They're on sale right now for buy one, get one $29.90. {Disclaimer: my blog has around 12 followers so no, I'm definitely not getting paid for saying any of this. I just love a good deal.} I love the colored pants with a print! One of my students asked me if they were jeggings - HA! Shoe-wise, flats were a MUST - it's still somewhat snowy in patches of the parking lot. I do have to give a shoutout to my girl Darcy for inspiring me to link my outfit like a REAL fashion blogger. If you are looking for fashion ideas, definitely check out Darcy's blog (linked above) - she's a good friend from college and now in the real world :) Back to teaching. I whipped up an anchor chart really quick today during my plan. As I've mentioned before, we do EnVision Math (anyone else out there?!) and our topic right now is about number patterns to 120. This will help us build some background before starting place value. We worked exclusively with the 100s chart today to notice patterns in the rows and columns. I think this will be a great thing for my firsties to refer back to :) {those gorgeous letters for the board header are here} Please ignore the really bad not straight line--actually please don't look. My OCD is freaking out. This was attempt 2 after I drew too many lines the first time (grr) and I refused to make a 3rd one. Also sorry that my 1's look like lowercase l's. Ha! But I love this puppy and know my kiddos will get a lot of good use out of it :) And it's another great thing in my room to point at when they ask questions. What do you think of today's style? Do you use EnVision Math? Do you use a hundreds chart to help teach place value? Can't wait to hear what you have to say! Shelby

I shared today on our Instagram story a framework to get your planning for math done in 15 minutes. At first this process will take you more time, but as your experience and collection of resources and ideas develop you will get more efficient. Think big broad ideas, general teaching strategies and balance. As you find your activities to match your content, a more detailed understanding of your lessons will begin to emerge. This framework is effective because it allows you to commence planning with the 'activities' and work backward. I like starting with activities, as it is the absolute essential part of a learning sequence and it's the part that will allow your students to actively build their own understanding. The focus should always be on the 'doing'. The Steps Identify content focus Break down content focus into sequenced steps (no more than 5, approximately one each day). Each will be a lesson focus for the day. Find or develop 5 sequenced activities that match these steps. These will be used in small groups next week, but for this week, weave them into your teaching content. Allocate a warm-up strategy for each day of the week that has an endless supply of activities (e.g. if Monday = counting - you can count by 1s, count backwards, skip count, partner count, count objects...... just slot in a new activity each Monday with the broad activity of 'counting'). Allocate a balanced range of teaching strategies across your week. This will take into consideration your teaching context, available resources, personal style and learner needs. Develop some guided/independent activities for each day that logically flow from your strategy and content. Similar to the warm up, allocate a type of concluding activity to each day of the week. Content Sequence Knowing the sequence of steps that leads to the understanding of a concept comes with teaching experience. This will be the time consuming part for a new teacher, but it will develop over time. Use your curriculum planning documents from your state/district/country as a guide. Talk to your colleagues. Use published curriculum resources for guidance. Our Math Packs are sequenced and will guide you with this progression. Strategy The section labeled 'strategy' refers to the main teaching and learning strategy you will use in your main lesson. Not the mathematical strategy. Teaching strategies include such things as direct instruction, role play, discussion, problem solving and case study. The idea in this planning format is that you use a range across the week to provide a balance. Building up and drawing on a bank of these general strategies provides you with a way to make your planning more manageable and reduce your workload. Identify your focus, plan your content sequence, slide in a strategy and you are all set. Well, it's a plan at least. Example Using the steps outlined above, here is an example week to give you an idea. We used the activities from our newly released Math Pack 19 and 20 to explain this process. However, this framework is easily applied to any resource activities you source or develop for yourself. Download the planning page from Google Drive HERE A Fortnightly Pattern Using this planning structure, your program/curriculum would follow a Week A/ Week B pattern. Your independent small group activities from A would be done by the students in B. After a week of lessons and teacher guidance on the content they will be more ready to engage independently with them - freeing you up to work with specific students or small fluid groups on identified learning needs. We hope that this planning process can help break down the sometimes daunting task of planning your week. It might also help you to see how FUN activities can be incorporated into your curriculum in a meaningful way. If we can help, please reach out and we will do our best.

Black on white or vice versa has been used effectively with Eastern calligraphy in art to draw more attention to the the form of the strokes. As the letters quite often consist of simple strokes, the combination is stark and appealing. Early Greek pottery also featured a strong emphasis on using black figures over a lighter background. giving a silhouette effect. Monochromatic imagery commands a different perception, especially if you're working without any shades in between. With black and white, the greater contrast makes a bolder statement, creates more depth and mystique, and makes the patterns and designs more dramatic. This

I have been a busy bee in the holidays making some new things and having Kinder for the first time ever is stretching my brain. What do I need? What should I make? Luckily I have my own little girl going into Kinder this year to 'test' my new stuff on. Check this one out... It is chock full of game ideas and number cards and it is fun! Just ask Madison lol We played one of the easy games - Numeral Identification, but with a little twist. This is what I started with - how cute is the popcorn box? It is from Woolworths in the party section. Check out your Woolies or $2 store (was in a pack of 6). Pop the cards inside (pop - get it?) We were pulling a card out and said the number. Then we made the number on the cute ten frame (also in the pack). We did this one together!. We were talking about adding and how it means making a bigger number by adding more. She was getting it a little but what can I expect? She is on holidays after all hehe. Even my son (3) had a turn at pulling numbers out and putting counters on the ten frame. We had to help him with what the number was but he was good at the counting. It is on sale until tomorrow for only $3 instead of $4 at my TPT store.
As of this morning 30 car travel appropriate busy bags will have been posted and I've finished making a total of 44. I need to fill 4 more ...
