This quantitative basic concepts task is a very hands-on visual approach to learning concepts of more, less, all, none, greater than, and less than. Students can choose the type of manipulative they would like to use with the choice icons. Manipulative choices include beans, sand, water, blocks, etc.. Staff puts the visual prompt strip on the bottom of the cookie sheet for the concept the student will be working on (“Which is more?”, “Which is less?”, etc…) Then, staff will choose two numbers to compare. Students will use a scooper or spoon to put that number of scoops into each cup for the numbers compared. For large objects, students can count the actual number of objects and put them in the cup. With blocks or duplos, remove the cup and stack them (Velcro the bottom block down first). Then, the student will move the number icon than represents the correct answer for the quantitative concept (more, less all, none) to the visual sentence strip. When working on greater or less than, staff will choose the numbers to compare. Students will scoop the correct number of materials into the cups. Then, move the greater or less than alligator or sign in between the numbers. First off, I need to apologize for not blogging since MAY! It's been a crazy couple of months. I moved TWICE since my last post and managed to start and end one job as a children's director at a Christian camp and begin a new one as a special education teacher. I am currently teaching 10 amazing, sassy, stubborn, and unpredictable 3-5th graders and LOVING it. I have an amazing support system at my school and have been learning so much from my principal, my psychologist, my instructional aides, and from the service providers. With that said, I am exhausted. I'm actually writing this blog post because I am killing time before I can go to sleep (I just won't allow myself to go to sleep before 9pm for some reason). I spend countless hours in my classroom. From what I have heard THIS IS NORMAL for a first year teacher-general ed or special ed. I had no clue the work that goes into being a teacher...the planning, the organizing, the meetings, the phone calls from parents, the notes to write and send home, the IEPs! The list goes on. It's sometimes hard already to remember that the whole reason I am doing all of this is for the 10 precious students that I get to teach each day. It truly is a JOY and a HONOR to be their teacher. Okay enough mushy, emotional stuff and on to the goodies! After 3 weeks of teaching (wow, that went by FAST), I have found some awesome resources and products that I believe to be essential for any moderate to severe special ed teacher just starting off (or even for you seasoned teachers out there). I will be sharing one each week over the next seven weeks! Ready? Okay here I go! NUMBER ONE! Task Boxes & File Folders. Currently, task boxes are one of my rotations i have an aide who works with the students and is reaching them how to do the task boxes. Eventually, my goal is for my students to be able to do them independently. Here is how I have my "Picture Perfect Independent Workers" Blue Table set up. They have a list of task boxes that they have to finish during their time at the blue table. Once they finish, they get to have their picture taken with a variety of props and "glam." The pictures then go up on the board. I got my organizational idea from Melissa Toth Finch. You can check out her blog all about the system here. I tweaked mine a bit to fit my students and their needs. I have made several of my own work boxes. Here are some of the ones my kiddos are currently working through. 1. Sorting and identifying colors 2. Identifying letters, matching letters, and building words 3. One to One Correspondence/Counting I got this product from Teaching Special Thinkers on TPT. You can purchase the product here. It is jammed packed with awesome tools that can be used for task boxes, small group instruction, or independent work. 4. Sorting by Category The students are given a few different cards and pictures and have to sort the pictures by category. You can pick this product up for FREE right here. 5. I got a TON of ideas from Sasha at the Autism Helper. She has a whole work task product that you can purchase here. It is a HUGE time saver and totally worth the 10 bucks! Yesterday, I wrote about planning my BBQ unit. Today, I will share pictures from my students completing this unit. All the resources showed in today's post are available on TPT (click here for the link). This unit comes with: * 19 vocabulary flash cards * An adapted book * An "I have, who has" card game * 11 worksheets We started the unit by reviewing the vocabulary words and reading an adapted book. Here is a picture of some of the vocabulary flash cards. The words covered in this unit are Strawberry, Grapes, Hamburger, Salad, Lemonade, Soda Pop, Juice Box, Apple, Kebob, Ketchup, Mustard, Chips, Picnic Table, Basket, Grill, Oven Mitt, Tongs, Napkin, and Plate. The adapted book I made as a part of this unit involves counting different BBQ foods. For each page, the kids match the correct number and food to the page. For my higher functioning kids, I made a mad-libs style book (check back tomorrow for details and a FREEBIE). We also played "I have, who has" card game to practice the vocabulary words. Some of my students played the game with their cards spread out on the table while my more advanced students practiced holding their cards in their hands (so their friends can't see them....we have struggled with this in the past!). Now that my students had a pretty good grasp on the vocabulary words, we started working on some of the worksheets. We spent 2 days (15 minutes a day), working on the 5 sentence writing worksheets. I adapted these a variety of ways depending on the learner. Some students worked on only copying the word, some dictated a sentence to me (I wrote it, they copied it), some came up with and wrote their own sentence, and my most advanced were responsible for coming up with 3 sentences for each vocabulary word. Next, we complete a following directions/coloring worksheet, matching words to pictures, and menu math. To wrap up the unit we did 2 cut/paste sorting activities. One involved sorting foods vs. drinks and the other involved sorting foods vs. not foods. The last day of the unit, my students finished any leftover work and we re-visited our game and adapted book. I loved this unit, because I was desperate for a little change in pace the last month of school...and, more importantly, my kids loved this topic as well. It was definitely motivating for them, which allowed them to learn a variety of skills in a fun, engaging way!

As I was cleaning up my classroom, I found this old file folder that I LOVE. It is another sorting activity that is a little more challenging....it involves sorting picture of boys vs. girls. I used some Boardmaker pictures, but also found some google images to add pictures of "real" boys/girls and even some celebrities. I store the pictures in a baggie inside the file folder. It can be hard to teaching cooking skills in special education classroom, especially if you don't have a kitchen! I mentioned before how I love "tricking" my students into learning by working on concepts using file folders. They still seem to think they are games! Or at least they enjoy them. Some of my students will even choose to do file folder activities during their breaks. A lot of file folders that you can find online are for basic facts, such as colors, counting, and what-not, but my students need to work a lot more on life skills that will help them become successful as young adults! So I created this set of file folders based on all things cooking and around the kitchen. I also include a variety of difficulty levels in my file folders so that I can appropriately challenge each of my students. First, we have a simple file folder that works on sorting measuring cups vs. measuring spoons. Then, this file folder works on students reading the label and finding the correct measuring cup or spoon. Now onto liquid measuring cups. This one is more simple, matching liquid colors and amounts. And then it gets challenging, matching the amount to the 1/2 cup as shown on the cup. I only have one pictures for you here, but I have four different options for setting the temperature for both the stove top and the oven. There are two different levels for each one, one with exact temperatures (ex. med, low, 350 degrees, etc) and one with in-between temperatures as well (ex. medium-low, 475, etc). You "turn" the knob to match the temperature. Could also be an easier task for student to make sure all of the burners are "turned off" too! Here's a food sort for what goes in the fridge/freezer and what goes in the cabinet. Sorting cups and plates vs. pots and pans. And finally sorting drinks vs. snacks. Aren't those fun? Well, today is our first day of home visits! We are going to over 10 houses today and splitting the rest over the next two afternoons (after school). One thing I really wanted to get done in time for the home visits were homework binders. For most of my kids' homework, I send home a packet of worksheets at their appropriate level in a home work folder each day. But, for my kids who can't write, this system doesn't work. So, what I have done in the past, is make a binder of work (similar to their morning group binder) for these kids to keep at home. This is a great way for students to get extra practice and for parents to see what their child is capable of doing independently. Here are some pictures of the binder I put together last night and I will be delivering to my student's house today! This is from our morning binder. All student's have to do is move the correct month/season down into the bold box. This is the same thing, but for the weather. Just move down the correct picture for weather/temperature into the bold box. These pages make for easy clean-up...just move the picture back to it's original location! These pages are great for extra practice matching the months/days or putting them in order (I have two versions- one with pictures to match and one with blank boxes for practicing the order). These two pages are to practice identifying appropriate clothes for different seasons (and practice dressing a person). This page is also from our morning binder. It is practice in identifying colors to describe clothes the child is wearing. This is a matching page for money...coin names and value. For some pages, I use zip-loc bags as storage for the pieces. I put velcro on the bag (and on the back of the previous page) so the bag can be attached as shown in the picture below. This helps with quick clean-up/storage and prevents losing pieces! ***Update: After many requests to sell my hw binders on TPT, I have finally added this product to my store.
