Here's a DIY backyard weather station that allows kids to make simple observations about rainfall, wind direction and air temperature.
David and I are weather geeks. We both wanted to be meteorologists when we were younger and I think Caroline got some of the genes. She found a homemade weather station in a library book and was very excited to make it. So I drafted David to do this as a science project with her!

Students develop an understanding of how engineers use wind to generate electricity. Student teams build model anemometers to better understand and measure wind speed.
Fall is a great time to focus science lessons around weather and severe weather. In many areas, fall is the high time for severe weather such as tornadoes, floods, lightning, and hurricanes. The national weather service has put together dates for severe weather awareness weeks by state and territory. Click here to find out when […]

Weather can play a dramatic role in the success or failure of your garden. It impacts plants need for food and water, their ability to flower and produce fruit, and their resistance to attacks by insects and disease.

Use this template to have your students make their own wind vane. They will have a blast putting the wind vane together and learning about wind measuring.
When making these I highly recommend using white card stock for the fin and tail. I trace the shapes on card stock and have the students cut them out. If a student is done early you can have them decorate the nose and fin. I try to get students to make a compass rose on their plates (they learned how to in Social Studies so this is a great tie in). Check your science kits (across grade levels) for the modeling clay but you can purchase from Walmart (approx. $4).
Anemometers are used to measure wind speed. The cups catch gusts of air which makes them spin around. Measurements are taken by counting the number of

There's been a lot of weather in my life recently. We just had a couple weeks of awesome summer weather followed by some sleet, snow, and hail. (Unfortunately, I wasn't paying much attention to the changes in weather and my 4 year old dressed herself in shorts and flip flops during one of our outings where it started to hail.) I've also been helping out with my 6 year old's homeschool co-op where the kids are learning about weather. I've been assigned the precipitation group and think it's awesome that my toddler can now yell 'PRECIP-TATION!' when it rains. My
