The crayons were spilling out of the container chubby... skinny... broken... used... donated... restaurant collected... You name it We were up to our elbows in crayons, (but instead of throwing them out) I had several activities in mind... Crayon Bundles What I did: I grabbed a crayon from each "color family", grabbed a small rubber band, and made crayon bundles. (Language and Literacy, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Development) What they did: They picked up the crayon bundles and began coloring! Since I was working with a mixed age group it was very interesting to see the children's various "scribbling stages". Lesson Reinforced: Scribbling is an essential part of a child's fine motor development. In fact, there are actually "20 basic scribbles" children must master before the formal writing stage Rhoda Kellogg- "20 Basic Scribbles" Helpful Tip: Keep your children's developmental age/ stage in mind when planning activities. Supervise and know your children. Crayon Melting What I did: I kept seeing different variations of this idea on Pinterest so I decided to try to make a crayon masterpiece of my own I grabbed a piece of canvas that the children had tossed to the side tore up some painter's tape to spell out my name hot-glued some crayons grabbed my hair dryer and quickly realized that... I should have left the wrappers on the crayons! "It may not turn out how you expect, but that's art for you" (Click here to see more crayon activities)

I have a new favorite chart! I found this on pinterest and knew it would be great to use during the first week with my new little first graders. Amanda (the smartie who made this) from First Grade Garden graciously allowed me to share a printable I made to go along with her anchor chart. I was so busy my first week that I never got around do doing this activity with the kids, so I'm saving it for one of those days when I think they need a big reminder about being good listeners. Also, I may tie it in with a writing lesson on labeling. Click the image to download this document.

Just for fun, I entered our DREAMS display in a B2S bulletin board contest on what just happens to be the anniversary of MLK Jr's I have a dream speech. I just love Wednesdays because it's our mid-week chance to gather as a community before school and launch into the day together. Staff members unite by wearing their character Ts and jeans. We recite the pledges to the flags as well as our character pledge: Graphic template from recitethis.com We share our moment of silence, then publicly celebrate birthdays. We get a weather report and listen to the lunch menu. Sometimes we enjoy a special performance or presentation. Before we leave, we sing the School Song together. This is what I'll be wearing today. It's actually the shirt I got for speaking at North Pointe Elementary last week so I won't match anyone else, but I'll wear it with pride, that's for sure. On the back, it says National School of Character. We have that in common with them! And during these first two weeks, there ought to be a lot of social contracts posted. A social contract is our promise to one another. They come in all shapes and sizes. Here are two examples; the first one will be complete when the students all put their thumbprint on it. These contracts are meant to be a working document so that if someone has signed the promise but has somehow gotten off track from the terms of the agreement, students and teachers can refer back to the contract and revisit it by asking: How did we say we would treat one another? Periodically it might need to be updated or something might need to be added. It's good to take a look at the contract at the end of each week to reflect on how you've done as a class. It's also important to share it with any new student who joins your class family and let him/her sign it. It's fun to see how these contracts evolve. Make it a wonder-filled Wednesday!

So we are back to another fun filled school term. After the nice 3 week long break, we dove headfirst into another exciting science unit. ...
I absolutely LOVE interactive journals!!! I am still working on other subject areas, but for now I use them in Math and Science. Here are some sample pages from my September Math Journal Prompts in action: I have always taught thematically, so the main themes in the September pack are Apples and Farm. However, about half of them are general prompts (like the dice, ten frame and putting numbers in order). All of these are based off standards taught early in the year for K students. If you're interested in using interactive math journals and don't know where to start.. these are perfect! Each prompt has pictures for your kiddos to work the problem out. This helps little learners to solve the problem without getting distracted from drawing out pictures, etc.. It also offers a quick assessment for the teacher. Check them out here!
This week, Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students are taking a pretest in Music. For each grade level, there will be a few questions that involve listening to examples. Other questions involve the students reading and bubbling their correct choice on a scan tron. Just like reading, math and science; music involves skills and concepts that the children are required to master by the end of the year. We will test again in January and once again at the end of the year. Thank you to all students for cooperating with me during this busy week. I know that testing is not fun, but it needs to be done! I cannot wait to watch you grow!
