No matter what genre you’re writing in, there are probably some things you’ll want to keep hidden from your readers until the time is right to surprise
Last week I pinned a fabulous optical illusion art idea from We Heart Art. She had completed this activity with her fifth graders, and I thought it would make a fantastic first lesson for my students. I tried it out with my oldest daughter last weekend (she's in grade 3), and when she achieved great results, I knew it would be perfect. This is a perfect art lesson for the beginning of the year because it uses only a few materials, has simple directions, and turns out to be an impressive work of art. As we were working on it, I could hear the "cool" and "awesome" comments that we teachers love to hear. We started our lesson by examining a colour wheel and discussing complimentary colours. I had students choose two complimentary colours for this project. To get started: 1) Locate the centre of the page - draw a dot with a pencil. 2) Still using the pencil, draw 6 straight lines through the centre. 3) Still using the pencil, draw "happy face" curved lines in alternate sections. 4) Colour in the sections with marker, alternating one coloured, one blank (these were my magenta sections). Use a pencil crayon (in the same magenta colour) to shade the edges of the blank sections. 5) Using the pencil again, draw "sad face" curved lines in the left over sections. 6) Colour in these sections with marker, alternating one coloured, one blank (these were my green sections). Use a pencil crayon (in the same green colour) to shade the edges. 7) Trace over all pencil lines (straight and curved) with a black marker. 8) Stand back and admire. :) It also makes a show-stopping bulletin board display!!! With just a few twists, you can turn this into a fabulous spider web art idea perfect for October. You can take a peek at my full lesson for this Spider Web Op-Art here. The lesson includes a full PDF as well as PowerPoint lesson with pictures and detailed step-by-step instructions for students, as well as a rubric for assessment and student reflection sheet. Happy Friday!!! And oh my - thank goodness it's Friday!!!

Creative writing choices to spark their imaginations.
Do you have pre-k and kindergarten students who are learning the alphabet for reading? Help them on their writing journey by including a tracing page each day or week alongside their learning of letters and letter formation. Our unique and original big shape tracing pages combine big shapes with internal handwriting pattern lines. I made these pages to to bridge the two important steps before learners attempt letter formation and writing. After big arm movements Big shape tracing on paperOnce your little ones have had plenty of opportunity doing 'big arm' writing (chalking on the ground, painting with water on the fence, big easel painting) it is time for big shapes on paper. Here they can trace a big picture on a page as their little hand and developing-pencil-control accommodates the whole page rather than the tiny movements of a letter on a line. Handwriting pattern lines on paper After lots of big shapes, you may move to handwriting pattern lines - up and down, side to side, zig zags and waves. Combine both! Our unique pages combine both with one piece of paper! Ask your learners to trace the large shape first - this dashed line is darker that the others, so students can locate it easily. Students then trace the handwriting pattern lines within the shape to finish their work. Encourage left to right and top to bottom. These can be done in marker or crayons and then the whole picture filled in with soft pencil or watercolor for display. Here is a sample from our alphabet pack. Now you can combine prewriting with the alphabet!
Have I told you all how excited I am about summer?! I mean 12 more days and I can sleep in!! Hallelujah! We have started a summer countdown chain in our room that looks similar to this one. I saw it weeks ago on Pinterest and knew I had to do! Not quite sure if it has been more helpful or more of a teaser but hey, it is getting the job done! Pic is via Pinterest Although we are counting down our days,…we are still making every single count. We have been busy! Here’s a peek at last week! Last week in language, we focused a lot on reviewing adverbs. We used this chart a lot during our review! Nothing fancy here..quick and simple was the name of the game last week! For a quick little activity, the kiddos helped me create word lists on the board for adverbs that tell where, when and how. We wrote a few sentences on the board and identified the adverbs. Afterwards, I gave them a few sentence stems to get them going and they had to complete the sentences on their own using an adverb. I love how these turned out! I love how this little love started with a very simple sentence and added a different adverb each time. You can snag this little craftivity up {here} in my Get Your Adverbs Here pack. I just cut the sun in half and gave each kiddo 4 colored strips. They cut them to the size they wanted on their sun. In phonics, we also worked a lot on suffixes –ful, –ly, and –y. I made these charts to hang in the room to help my kiddos out when identifying the root word and suffixes. They are now suffix PROS after using Amy Lemon’s Prefix and Suffix freebie. You can find those {here}. For math, we continued with our measurement studied and worked on capacity. I thought I would keep things clean and dry during our explore time for capacity, so….I brought out LOTS of manipulatives. I set up 4 stations (one for each table group). When they rotated to each station, they had to estimate and then count how many manipulatives would fill up the container. They recorded all their estimations and actual measurements on their recording sheets….manilla style!! I am off to eat some yummy dinner with my parents and in-laws! We have lots of Disney planning to finish up!!

So, once again I am going to be a day behind in my blogging :) I think I may need to just start a weekly Saturday link up since I'm always around 12 hours late to the cute one on Doodle Bugs Teaching. Of course, if I did that I'd probably do 90% of the Saturday posts on Sunday :) There seems to be only two places I get to on time - work and church. Everywhere else is hit or miss. According to my hubby, if I say I'm going to be home by 4:30, then he starts getting ready at 4:30 because typically I am 15 to 45 minutes later than my original time. I have some major timing issues ya'll! Anyway, even though I'm late, I am still going to link up to Doodle Bugs Teaching because it is way to cute to pass up. Here are my 5 random facts for this week. Random Fact #1: I finished! I finished! I worked ALL day yesterday on creating my newest packet. ALL day as in I finished at 1:30 in the morning. Do any of you guys ever do that? I'm down to four sheets left, my hubby is snoring, and I sitting here thinking, "I have to be the Little Engine that Could." Anyway, it's a set of St. Patrick's Day printables. If you like all of my freebies, you will LOVE this packet. Some of them are similar to the sheets I've had on here and some of them are completely different. They can easily be used for morning work, homework, review, or assessments. Oh, and these two sheets are freebies in my preview section. Just click on them and it will take you straight to where you can download them. Here are pictures of the rest of the packet. If you like what you see, you can click on any of the pictures and it will take you to my TPT store. Random Fact #2: Have you ever seen a small Chihuahua try to bury something on a bed? It might be the funniest thing in the world. I gave my Bella a dog biscuit to eat since she's been hanging out with me in my focus zone - my bed. Well, she took it and started trying to push the sheet over it. However, you can't exactly push the bottom sheet over anything, so it was pretty funny. Here's a picture of Bella sitting with my focus snacks yesterday :) I can get anything accomplished with a Coke and a few snacks :) and I wonder why my jeans have tightened up a little. Random Fact #3: This is the blog for one of my favorite people right now. Jessica's blog is cute and has some great ideas. I think the part that amazes me the most is she actually designs it herself. She's also become a pretty good friend. In the TPT world, it's rare to know someone that actually does this and I've been blessed with two, Jessica being one of them. I'll tell you about the other one tomorrow. She constantly cracks me up with her comments and the links and pictures she sends. In the last two months, I'd also say she's one of my top five encouragers. Anyway, Jessica and I have been switching a lot of our items for the last month or two and I have to tell you, her new spring packets are awesome. I can honestly say I've never seen a packet that really does stretch from K-2, but hers does. I checked two of them yesterday and immediately asked if I could use them. Oh, the best part about this random fact is she has NO idea that I'm blogging about her right now which I find hilarious because we are talking on FB :) Random Fact #4: When I create, I have this habit of picking a television show and listening to it. I rarely watch. I just listen. Back during the summer, I went through ALL of the Gossip Girl episodes and Cosby Show episodes. This week, I've managed to go through all of the Scandal episodes. The funny part about Scandal is it has new episodes even now, so I started on Netflix and had to switch to Hulu Plus halfway through. Now, I've moved onto Parenthood which I have to say is a new favorite. It has a kid with Asperger's, so since I know kids with it, it's easy to relate to how he reacts. Random Fact #5 I LOVE my iPad and I have certain apps I check every day, but my favorite app is Bejeweled Blitz. Each game only lasts a minute, so you can play it as little or as much as you want. It is the one game I play when I need to not think. It's also a freebie, so if you click on the picture, it will take you to the Apple app store so you can grab it. Alright, hopefully my post tomorrow is a little shorter. The last couple have felt like the world's longest posts. Of course, the owl hooting outside my window is probably not helping my focus :) Hope you guys have a restful Saturday! I'm off to create some more.
