¿Qué me enseñará la vida de San Bernabé? ¿A compartir mis bienes con los pobres? ¿A tratar de descubrir las aptitudes que otros tienen para el apostolado y a ayudarles a emplearlas bien? ¿A dedicar mi vida a propagar nuestra santa religión? El Espíritu Santo me ilumine. La historia de San Bernabé está escrita en el libro de Los Hechos de los apóstoles, en la S. Biblia. Antes se llamaba José, pero los apóstoles le cambiaron su nombre por el de Bernabé, que significa "el esforzado", "el que anima y entusiasma". Era judío, de la tribu de Leví, pero nació en la isla de Chipre. Se hizo muy popular en la primitiva Iglesia porque vendió las fincas que tenía y luego llevó el dinero que obtuvo y se lo dio a los apóstoles para que lo repartieran a los pobres. Un mérito formidable de San Bernabé es el haber descubierto el gran valor que había en aquel recién convertido que se llamaba Saulo y que más tarde se llamaría San Pablo. Cuando después de su conversión Saulo llegó a Jerusalén, los cristianos sospechaban de él y se le alejaban, pero entonces Bernabé lo tomó de la mano y lo presentó a los apóstoles y se los recomendó. Y el será el que lo encaminará después a emprender sus primeras grandes labores apostólicas. La S. Biblia, en el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, hace de Bernabé unos elogios que es difícil encontrarlos respecto de otros personajes. Dice así: "Bernabé era un hombre bueno, lleno de fe y de Espíritu Santo" (Hechos 11, 24). Cuando Saulo o San Pablo tuvo que salir huyendo de Jerusalén porque los judíos trataban de asesinarlo, se fue a su ciudad de Tarso, y allá se quedó un tiempo. Mientras tanto en la ciudad de Antioquía había sucedido algo muy especial. Al principio los discípulos de Jesús solamente predicaban el Evangelio a los israelitas, pero de pronto algunos empezaron a enseñar las doctrinas cristianas a los paganos en Antioquía, y resultó que aquellas gentes respondieron de una manera admirable y se convirtieron por centenares. Al saber esta noticia, los apóstoles lo enviaron desde Jerusalén a que se informara de lo que allí estaba sucediendo y les llevara noticias. Bernabé se quedó encantado del fervor de aquellos paganos convertidos y estuvo con ellos por un buen tiempo animándolos y acabando de instruirlos. En aquella ciudad fue donde por primera vez se llamó "cristianos" a los seguidores de Cristo. Entonces se le ocurrió a Bernabé la feliz idea de dirigirse a Tarso a invitar a Saulo a que se le uniera en el apostolado en Antioquía y éste aceptó con gusto. Desde entonces Bernabé y Saulo trabajaban asociados ayudándose en todo el uno al otro, y obteniendo resonantes triunfos. Por todo un año predicaron en Antioquía, cuidad que se convirtió en el gran centro de evangelización, del cual fueron saliendo misioneros a evangelizar a diversos lugares. Por aquel tiempo hubo una gran hambre en Jerusalén y sus alrededores y los cristianos de Antioquía hicieron una colecta y la enviaron a los apóstoles por medio de Bernabé y Saulo. Ellos al volver a Jerusalén se trajeron a Marcos (el futuro San Marcos evangelista) que era familiar de Bernabé. Venía a ayudarles en la evangelización. Un día mientras los cristianos de Antioquía estaban en oración, el Espíritu Santo habló por medio de algunos de ellos que eran profetas y dijo: "Separen a Bernabé y Saulo, que los tengo destinados a una misión especial". Los cristianos rezaron por ellos, les impusieron las manos, y los dos, acompañados de Marcos, después de orar y ayunar, partieron para su primer viaje misionero. En Chipre, la isla donde había nacido San Bernabé, encontraron muy buena aceptación a su predicación, y lograron convertir al cristianismo nada menos que al mismo gobernador, que se llamaba Sergio Pablo. En honor a esta notable conversión, Saulo se cambió su nombre por el de Pablo. Y Bernabé tuvo la gran alegría de que su tierra natal aceptara la religión de Jesucristo. Luego emprendieron su primer viaje misionero por las ciudades y naciones del Asia Menor. En la otra ciudad de Antioquía (de Pisidia) al ver que los judíos no querían atender su predicación, Bernabé y Pablo declararon que de ahora en adelante les predicarían a los paganos, a los no israelitas, con lo cual los paganos sintieron una inmensa alegría al saber que la nueva religión no los despreciaba a ellos sino que más bien los prefería. Allí en Iconio estuvieron a punto de ser apedreados por una revolución tramada por los judíos y tuvieron que salir huyendo. Pero dejaron una buena cantidad de convertidos y confirmaron sus enseñanzas con formidables señales y prodigios que Dios obraba por medio de estos dos santos apóstoles. En la ciudad de Listra, al llegar curaron milagrosamente a un paralítico y entonces la gente creyó que ellos eran dos dioses. A Bernabé por ser alto y majestuoso le decían que era el dios Zeus y a Pablo por la facilidad con la que hablaba lo llamaban el dios Mercurio. Y ya les iban a ofrecer un toro en sacrificio, cuando ellos les declararon que no eran tales dioses, sino unos simples mortales. Luego llegaron unos judíos de Iconio y promovieron un tumulto y apedrearon a Pablo y cuando lo creyeron muerto se fueron, pero él se levantó luego y curado instantáneamente entró otra vez en la ciudad. Después de todo esto Bernabé y Pablo se devolvieron ciudad por ciudad donde habían estado evangelizando y se dedicaron a animar a los nuevos cristianos y les recordaban que "es necesario pasar por muchas tribulaciones para entrar en el Reino de Dios" (Hechos 14, 22). Al llegar a Antioquía se encontraron con que los cristianos estaban divididos en dos partidos: unos (dirigidos por los antiguos judíos) decían que para salvarse había que circuncidarse y cumplir todos los detalles de las leyes de Moisés. Otros decían que no, que basta cumplir las leyes principales. Bernabé y Pablo se pusieron del lado de los que decían que no había que circuncidarse, y como la discusión se ponía acalorada, los de Antioquía enviaron a Jerusalén una embajada para que consultara con los apóstoles. La embajada estaba presidida por Bernabé y Pablo. Los apóstoles reunieron un concilio y le dieron la razón a Bernabé y Pablo y luego pasaron horas muy emocionantes oyéndoles contar las formidables aventuras de sus viajes misioneros. Volvieron a Antioquía y dispusieron organizar un segundo viaje misionero. Pero Bernabé quería llevar como ayudante a su primo Marcos, y Pablo se oponía, porque Marcos les había abandonado en la mitad del viaje anterior (por miedo a tantas dificultades). Y así fue que se separaron y Bernabé se fue a acabar de evangelizar en su isla de Chipre y San Pablo se fue a su segundo viaje. Más tarde se encontraron otra vez como amigos misionando en Corinto (1 Cor. 9,6).
