How do we become more resilient leaders, executives, entrepreneurs, parents, and people? While it has always been known that some people, and some organizations, recover from setbacks better than others, new brain and behavioral research is now shedding some light on why. Even better, it is showing that we can cultivate resilience in ourselves before we even need it. Here’s a checklist, informed by new brain research:
Emotion regulation serves as a strategy to help clients reduce the intensity of big emotions and practice self-care habits to lessen their emotional suffering. The goal is not to get rid of emotions altogether but to cope effectively with an emotional situation. Practicing emotion regulation leads to increased self-awareness and emotional resilience. The What Is Emotion Regulation In DBT handout shares information about the focus of the approach, its goals, and benefits of the skills training. For example, it mentions that one of the purposes of emotion regulation is to stop painful emotions from starting in the first place. This handout helps kids and teens to understand that their emotions have a purpose. After they use it, you can help reinforce their learning by letting them spend a few minutes each day to reflect on the different emotions they experienced that day. Next, they can identify which emotions were more challenging to manage and brainstorm coping strategies such as deep breathing or listening to soothing music. The ability to bounce back from setbacks is often described as the difference between successful and unsuccessful people. Resilience has been shown to positively influence work satisfaction and engagement, as well as overall well-being, and can lower depression levels. But resilience isn’t just a kind of solitary internal “grit” that allows us to bounce back. New research shows that resilience is also heavily enabled by strong relationships and networks. We can nurture and build our resilience through a wide variety of interactions with people in our personal and professional lives. These interactions can help us to alter the magnitude of the challenge we’re facing. They can help crystalize the meaningful purpose in what we are doing or help us see a path forward to overcome a setback — these are the kinds of interactions that motivate us to persist. Are your relationships broad and deep enough to help support you when you hit setbacks? Here’s an exercise to help you think that through.
