I will be using this for our first novel study again in class this fall. I highly recommend this! -Allison M. ♥ This has helped me so much in teaching Holes to my students this year. Other resources overwhelm students with too much vocabulary and literal comprehension questions but these slides give students one vocabulary word for each chapter and a grade-level higher-order comprehension skill to practice. - Kristin P. ♥ This does a really good job of focusing on vocab and using context clues, practicing quoting from the text, and target skills. I really liked the way it focused on one skill for every two chapters, which made things really manageable for my students. - Beth A. If you haven't already, you REALLY need to check out When Pigasso Met Mootisse by Nina Laden. The very clever and very funny book is kind of a parody of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse's friendship. My students and I really enjoyed it. You can view my lesson plan on Artsonia (or just keep reading!) Objectives 1. The students will listen to and participate in a discussion about Nina Laden’s “When Pigasso Met Mootisse.” 2. The students will define friendship and brainstorm a list of attributes of a good friend. 3. The students will create a portrait of a friend they would want to have (not a specific person) in a style that combines Cubism and Fauvism. 4. The students will write at least five words/phrases that describe a friend they would want to have. 5. The students will apply knowledge of warm and cool colors in the creation of their drawings. Materials Day 1: 9x12 inch white paper, pencils and erasers Day 2: Pencils, erasers, sharpies or other black marker/felt tip pen Day 3: Crayons or oil pastels Day 1: The teacher will introduce the project by reading “When Pigasso Met Mootisse” to the class. After the story, the class will discuss the big idea of the book: Friendship. The teacher will call on students to answer the questions: What is friendship? How do you know if someone is your friend? Next, the teacher will ask the class to brainstorm qualities of a good friend. As the qualities are listed, the teacher will record them on the board. The teacher will explain to the students that for their assignment, they need to think of what qualities they want in a friend. The teacher will tell the students that they will be drawing a portrait of a friend they would want to have (a generic friend, not a specific person). The teacher will remind the students that Pigasso and Mootisse were based on real artists from history, Pablo Picasso and Henri Mattisse. The teacher will tell the students that Picasso was one of the founders of Cubism (more than one side of something is shown at the same time) and that Matisse was a Fauve (Fauve means wild beast, called that because of the bright, wild colors they used.) Both styles will be reflected in the portraits. The teacher will lead the students through the drawing of a Cubist portrait. 1. Ask the students to place their hand in the middle of their paper. Since your face is about the size of your hand, it is a good guide. The students will use their pencils to put a dot right above the middle finger and right below their palm. 2. Draw the outside shape of a face. An oval or egg shape will work fine since the portraits will be abstract. The dots are a guide to get the head big enough. The top and bottom of the oval should touch the dots. If students need a guid for how wide to make the shape, the width of their hand will work. 3. Draw a side view of a face (in profile) in the middle of the paper. Students can start at the top dot and end at the bottom. (Before drawing, I turned sideways and traced my profile with my finger pointing out forehead, brow ridge, nose, bottom of the nose, lip 1, lip 2, chin. While drawing, I modeled my thought process so students knew I wasn't just making a squiggly line.) 4. Add features to face in profile: side of nose, lips, eye brow, eye looking sideways, ear. 5. Add features to the other half of the face, looking straight forward. Simplified shapes are good (football shape for eye, etc.) 6. With any remaining time, show the students how to draw shapes for hair. Stress to the students not to shade in the hair or make individual strands, just the outline. This is where the students can make their "friend" a boy or a girl. Day 2: The teacher will quickly review the material covered on day 1. The students will choose at least 5 words of phrases that describe the kind of friend they would want to have (nice, honest, fun, etc.) and use a pencil to write them around their drawing. The students will use sharpies or black markers to trace over all of the lines they have drawn and the words that they wrote. When everyone is done tracing, pick up the markers and tell students to get their pencil again. Next, use the pencil to lightly draw lines dividing the head and background into more shapes. I suggest using a line on the paper as a starting point and drawing a straight line to the edge of another line for the face or to the edge of the paper for the background. Tell the students that every shape will be carefully colored in so they should not overdo it! If everyone finishes early, start the process described for Day 3. Day 3: The teacher will remind the students that the first part of the drawing was inspired by Cubism and the colors will be inspired by Fauvism. The teacher will review warm and cool colors with the students and tell them that they will use warm colors for the face and hair and cool colors for the background. The teacher will demonstrate applying color with crayon to a drawing. The teacher will also remind the students that the colors don’t have to make sense. A color can be used more than once but two shapes of the same color should not touch. Here are some of the results! You can view the whole exhibit in our Artsonia gallery!

On Day 2 we read "What Mommies and Daddies do Best" by Laura Numeroff. Then we share connections about our parents or guardians. I also love to read Weird Parents by Wood. This is a funny story about parents who love to embarrass their children. (one of my favorite things to do) After reading and connecting, we make our parents and/or guardians. We also do this sort below with Parent/Children or Both.
A blog about children's books, story time, library service, and literacy activities written by a children's librarian turned stay-at-home mom.
We've been reading bits of Castle by David Macaulay aloud together. It is a very detailed account about how a castle and the adjoining town were planned out and built. One section talked about how the castle walls were built. We tried to design our own walls to be as strong as possible. The drawing from Castle shows how thick the castle walls were constructed. We tried to do the same... The first time round, the rice made our wall buckle (and break). We learned the importance of mortar in binding the rocks together!! LD and DD designed this wall. And we reworked this wall with double rows of bricks and rice in the middle. Both castle wall designs were destroyed equally as easily by our spoon catapults, but the kids really listened, looked and learned a lot about how castle walls were built. Not to mention that they had a blast destroying the walls!! I could add in another 10 pictures of the new walls that were constructed and destroyed, but will leave it with this!!
This seven-level course is built on a unique combination of three learning pillars - literacy, oracy and creativity - and empowers young learners to reach their full potential. Children learn to read through exposure to vocabulary in natural contexts in original fiction and nonfiction texts, then read to learn! They investigate Big Questions throughout each unit, thinking critically along the way. The groundbreaking oracy framework puts the focus on both verbal and nonverbal skills, helping learners grow into confident, competent communicators. The creativity principles encourage students to become better thinkers and problem solvers, while enjoying themselves! Worked examples or Exercises

Pre-printed brochures fully encompassed ELA skills for the novel. This is an extremely easy, but very rich set of activities for understanding and enriching student's ELA skills. I will be using this for our first novel study again in class this fall. I highly recommend this! -Allison M. ♥ This has helped me so much in teaching novels to my students this year. - Beth A. ♥ I loved using this resource! The questions are engaging, yet they are not too overwhelming for the students. It provides higher-order thinking and we have great class discussions while completing the questions. My students really liked these. - Chelsea M. Feedback from homeschool families about the novel studies... ★ I LOVE the layout and how it guides my son and I through our reading time. As a homeschool parent, I still wanted to give him that opportunity to discuss and grapple with the text and I love this quick format as a brochure. I also love the vocab focus for each section and the skill listed so I can monitor his understanding of these as we move through a variety of texts this year. - Antonia S. ★ My kids LOVED this book companion. The vocabulary was rich, and I liked the focus on one word a day. I also liked that they had to use context clues rather than dictionary definitions... The tasks were a great review of skills I covered throughout the year. Parent-friendly and easy to implement. - Corinne M. ★ I am a homeschool mom and my daughter is enjoying the book and I am loving that she is able to respond to the reading through various aspects and not just answering questions. She is more engaged in her reading and asking more questions after she completes each task. - Terri B. ★I purchased this resource for my son to use with his novel that I planned for our homeschool education. The last couple of years, I have really struggled to get him to work in his reading journals or to even get him to just discuss his reading with me. I came across your studies... It has literally CHANGED reading in our homeschool. He is reading more than ever without struggle but he is also completing the digital work for the chapters without issues and his responses have been amazing...it's been a HUGE change and reading is one of his favorite parts of every day. - Kristy D.

Benchmark Advance is a brand-new, comprehensive English Reading/Language Arts program. The program is built to address key shifts in curriculum and instruction to meet the demands of the new standards. Rigorous, integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction meets the needs of districts implementing a reading collaborative, balanced approach, or workshop model, and enables all students to master rigorous learning goals with strong resources for differentiated instruction and responsive teaching based upon ongoing assessments. While the program itself is incredibly rigorous, as I implemented the product within my students, I noticed that it lacked some supplemental resources. Within this product you will find ALL of the student objectives (created in poster format) and a supplemental resource addressing the following areas: Unit Introduction, Read Aloud & Shared Reading, Short Read 1, Writing, Phonics & Word Study. Additionally, posters have been created to address the unit's domain-specific and general academic vocabulary for each week, as well as high-frequency and spelling words. Everything has been clearly labeled for easy and immediate implementation. Print as needed (e.g., whole-class instruction, small group instruction/Daily 5) or print all and create your own students' practice books! Do note that the only thing not included is assessment, as I feel that the program has created sufficient assessment opportunities to apply within the students. After downloading, please don't forget to write a fair review. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
