When taking French as a subject, beginners need to know some basic grammar and verb. Here’s a brief explanation of how to form a verb tense. There are 3 main verb tenses, “er”, “ir”, and “re”. Present Tense Je chante Nous chantons Tu chantes Vous chantez Il chante Ils chantent “ir” and “re” verbs slightly different but just as simple to do. Finir-to finish Vendre- to sell Je finis Nous finissons Je vends Nous vendons Tu finis Vous finissez Tu vends Vous vendez Il finit Ils finissent Il vend Ils vendent Like «er » verbs, remove the “er” ending and add respective endings. Passé Compose Most verbs follow the formula: « sujet + avoir + past participle » except the « Vandertramp » verbs. An image of the Vandertramp verbs that require être and not avoir. Here is an example of a regular conjugation: J’ai chanté Nous avons chanté Tu as chanté Vous avez chanté Il a chanté Ils ont chanté Next we will move onto another useful past tense, the Imperfect Tense. Imparfait After learning Passé Compose, we can do the Imperfect Tense. Use the present tense ‘nous’ form of a verb, and add its respective ending. Examples of regular imperfect tense conjugations. Futur Proche Another useful verb to know is the Futur Proche tense. This verb is useful for things that will happen in the near future. The formula is simply « sujet + aller conjugation + infinitive. » Je vais chanter Nous allons chanter Je vais finir Nous allons finir Tu vas chanter Vous allez chanter Tu vas finir Vous allez finir Il va chanter Ils vont chanter Il va finir Ils vont finir Futur Simple Finally, now that we have become familiar with avoir, we can easily do the Futur Simple. Here is an example of a reguler « er » and « re » conjugation. Je chanterai Nous chanterons Je vendrai Nous vendrons Tu chanteras Vous chanterez Tu vendras Vous vendrez Il chantera Ils chanteront Il vendra Ils vendront See how easy French grammar is? Maybe it’s the slow change to cool, deep-autumn weather that has me thinking of Lars von Trier’s film, Melancholia. The beautiful, surreal (or too-real?) film features a wedding taking place at a beautiful home and its grounds: The home in real life is Sweden’s Tjolöholm Castle, an Arts and Crafts creation by architect Lars Israel Wahlmann. The exterior of the castle and its grounds is where Melancholia filmed its eerie outdoor scenes.

The Tithe Barn was built in the early 14th century as part of the medieval farmstead belonging to Shaftesbury Abbey. Its function was to store the produce of the farm, and of the farms of the manor. Tenant farms contributed a tithe, meaning a tenth of their produce. King Ethelred gave the Manor of Bradford, including the monastery founded by St Aldhelm, to the Abbess of Shaftesbury in 1001. The barn is now owned and maintained by English Heritage.
