A few weeks ago my productivity was halted when my small machine that I use for all my piecing made a big clunk and refused to budge. I couldn't believe it and was slightly devastated! Of course I took it in for repair right away and crossed my fingers that it wasn't anything major. All was not lost though! I took advantage of the piecing down time to quilt some quilts using my big machine. I'm fortunate that I have two machines! COLOR EXPLOSION 51" x 62" I've always loved this design and enjoy throwing all the colors of the rainbow into it when I make one. I usually reserve this design for baby quilts using six HST blocks and two borders, but with a treasure trove of HSTs already made I decided a lap quilt was worth my time. I like to pair up colors and then add another color element in the centers of each block. I've learned that if something works there is no need to change it. As they say 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'! I love a good rainbow and while this quilt has every color under the rainbow, it doesn't have that true spectrum we associate with rainbows. I was unsure if I would add a border until the very end. As you can see I did! I added a 3" border using Kona Medium Grey because I love the look of this design with borders. Using a good neutral gives it containment without interfering with the colors. One thing I was sure of was the quilting part! You know, the usual...straight lines! I always divide my quilt into sections before I start quilting this design. After mapping out the sections I marked the 1" lines with my Hera Marker. It's a lot of work marking the lines before hand, but it's also necessary. By marking first, I can make small adjustments here and there to make sure the lines are as straight as can be. Truth be told...the seams and points aren't perfect! There are enough 'guides' along the way that I can follow so that while marking and quilting I don't get too far off the beaten path. I used Light Fern Aurifil thread 50wt (#2882) for all the quilting. It was a good choice as it didn't stick out like a sore thumb! The back and binding are Kona Shadow. It's my favorite light grey and one that I use over and over again. As for my small machine...it made it home after two weeks away. Turns out it was so full of lint that the gears were caked with it and they couldn't turn any longer! I won't say I'm a cleaning fanatic, but I honestly clean my machines regularly! And I take it in once a year and have professionals service it. I'll try harder, clean more often and hope this doesn't happen again anytime soon! I use a brush and pipe cleaners. Welcome to finish it up Friday! Once again, I am thankful for accountability of this linky party and the push to finish something each week! It gets a little harder during this time of the year...but I don't need to tell you that! These little guys....1 1/2" finished half-square triangles...are my new favorite. (Quarter in the photo for scale.) They were an off shoot from another project, of course. Quilting is one big rabbit trail, isn't it? But....it's a fun trail to be on and I wouldn't have it any other way! I had the bright idea to use these tiny HSTs to make a cherry pit warmer. My feet will be perpetually cold until May or June of next year...but this little cherry pit warmer will help! The inside is filled with cleaned (and sanitized) cherry pits. To warm it up, I place it in the microwave for a few minutes, along with a cup of water, to prevent burning or scorching. It retains the heat for several minutes. I've also filled these types of warmers with rice, which seems to retain the heat even longer than the cherry pits. Either way, these warmers are a must in my house! I think they would make great gifts, too. The back side is patchwork, as well. I layered the patchwork onto 100% cotton batting (since it will be microwaved, be sure to avoid any polyester in the batting) and then I quilted it with straight lines. I sewed the two panels together, turned it right side out, filled it and stitched it closed by hand. It didn't take long at all...once the patchwork was made, that is! :) My son already requested one in his favorite color scheme of blue and green. He knew better than try to claim this one as his own! This is scrap project # 117. These blocks were leftover from my just four fun quilt (free pattern here) and since there were 6 of them, I thought they would make a perfect set of coasters. I love to make coasters because they are quick, they are cute, and they use up those long, skinny strips of leftover batting. These finish at about 4 1/2" square and they are reversible. (Love that!) Binding coasters feels highly ridiculous, but it finishes them off so nicely...I knew it would be worth it! I used my how to bind tiny things tutorial, which worked like a charm. My husband asked if he could take them to work to put in his office, so they have already found a home. Hurray! These are scrap project #118. Inspired by Sarah Cooper's Lava Meets Sea quilt at Coopcrafts, I set about creating my own version. Lava Meets Sea by Sarah Cooper I decided to go with teal instead of aqua, and batiks instead of solids. My half square triangles (hst) are 3" finished. To begin, I cut a bunch of 4" squares--as in, I didn't count since I was too busy cutting plenty. Mathematically speaking, the exact measurement for half square triangles should be 7/8" larger than your finished size. However, this only works in a perfect world. If you live on my planet, this always results in half square triangles that are too small and a square-ish, but not exactly square, shape. It works much better to cut the squares a teensy bit larger, so you can make sure they end up being 3 1/2" unfinished after any stitching and pressing imperfections and distortion. I matched up pairs of squares, right (pretty) sides together, making sure there was a lighter and darker value, so I had sets of dark red with lighter red, dark red with light teal, dark teal with light red, and dark teal with light teal. The next step in the process was drawing a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner of the wrong side of the lighter-colored squares. I like to use a Bohin chalk pencil or Frixion pen, but a pencil is a perfectly acceptable option if that's what's handy. I sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line. I chain my squares through the machine sewing on the left side of each square without severing the thread between squares, flip the whole thing around and sew 1/4" away from the other side of the drawn line. Leaving the line of thread connected, I press one triangle flap open, rotate the chain of squares around so the square that was on the far right is on the far left. Press the other flap open. Cut from corner to corner along your draw line, making two separate half square triangles. The sweet folks at Bloc_loc sent me a 6 1/2" half square triangle ruler to evaluate. I highly recommend it! There is a groove down the middle that nestles against the seam of half square triangles so the ruler will not slide around, assuring a safe and accurate cut. Additionally, the process of using the ruler eliminates the need to remove dog ears (the tiny triangles that stick out from underneath the half square triangle) in a separate step. While you can, and I previously did, use a regular, square acrylic ruler, this is so much easier. I don't have to take longer trying to exert enough downward pressure on the ruler to prevent it from moving and taking a chunk out of my block, or worse, my finger. To use the ruler, lay the groove against the seam and push it as far forward as possible, while still having a tiny bit of fabric poke out beyond the edge of the ruler. Square up two sides. I hold the ruler with my left hand and cut off the right and top edges. If you have a rotating cutting mat, turn it around and slide the Bloc_loc ruler down along the seam line. If not, rotate the ruler with the hst still nestled underneath it, so that the corner that was on top is now on bottom. Slide it to your unfinished measurement (finished size of the block plus 1/2"). Since my half square triangles are going to be 3" finished, I lined up my already-cut edges with the 3 1/2" marks. Another advantage to this ruler is the nice thin, easy-to-read lines. There aren't all those wide yellow marks every 1/8" getting in the way. Cut along the edges of the ruler to square your block to the desired size. Bloc_loc also makes hst rulers in 1.5", 2.5", 3.5", 4.5", 5.5", 6.5", and 12.5", as well as flying geese rulers, in case you want to purchase a size specifically suited for your project of incorporate flying geese units. I found using the Bloc_loc ruler to be easy and quick. It's one of those "Where have you been all my life?" notions. Thank you, Bloc_loc. Here's my progress thus far. I plan to swap out some of the pieces with those that have better contrast, but I am loving what I am seeing. I'm linking up with the parties on my linky page.

It's time my friends! the Valley Song Quilt Pattern is officially here! If you've been around a while...well, since 2017, you may recognize this design. If you're new around here, I'm excited to give you a glimpse of what started Lo & Behold Stitchery. Valley Song is a re-design of the very FIRST pattern I ever created...can you believe it? In 2017, life looked very different for us. I was a full time NICU nurse, Peter worked endless hours in hospitality, we lived in Raleigh, and Lo & Behold Stitchery was just something fun to do on my days off of work. I wanted to create meaningful quilts that not only stood the test of time, but also would be loved by others. I made a goal to design just a few quilts that I wanted to see in my home... I would have never dreamed that this little pattern would be the start of where we are today! It's actually kind of hard to believe that this was the first pattern I wrote! While Valley Song looks simple in construction, there is a lot of math and complexity that went into the different size blocks. Knowing what I now know about pattern design, I'm not really sure how I did it! The Valley Song pattern you see today looks completely different than it did 7 years ago, while still keeping the original design intact. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE I wanted to make the construction of this quilt a little more simple than the original version, so as an advanced beginner pattern, it's all strips and HSTs. In the early stages of re-writing the pattern, it occurred to me that because of the HSTs, you can create different patterns and designs throughout the quilt. Fun, right?? While Valley Song just touches on a few of these, the possibilities with HSTs are nearly endless!
