Hi friends, This might just be the longest WIP ever....well, one of the longest quilts for me to complete - The Denim Triangle Quilt. It all began in the summer of 2011 when I was pregnant with my son Grey. Growing rapidly I decided in haste or was it my nesting instinct, to cut up all of my pre-pregnancy jeans. I believe it was a total of 21 pairs, throw in a couple of my husbands which were beyond repair and I had my work cut out for me, literally. It took a while standing at the kitchen counter of our old apartment cutting the legs off, then the side seams and using my straight acrylic ruler cutting into 6

It seems fitting to finish this quilt in time for spring. (Well, technically it is spring, although we're expecting a bit of snow tomorrow.) The bright colors of the Anna Maria Horner fabrics are undeniably cheerful and full of life, just like the season, and the low volume prints set them off nicely. I used 50 weight white, Aurifil thread to quilt the top in a free motion figure eight design, which I recommend if you are new to free motion quilting or have a largish quilt to handle on a home machine. The design offers lots of places to stop and adjust your quilt without interrupting the flow of the shapes. It can also be modified to fill pieced shapes, like these triangles. The binding is another Anna Maria Horner favorite, and the backing is a soft, white flannel. I'm sending the quilt to my grandmother. It will drape over the back of her couch where she will see it everyday. At 54 x 71 it is also a good size to fold over her lap on chilly days. She may not remember that I made it for her, but I'll feel better knowing it's there with her although I can't be.

The Inside Out Star Quilt Pattern was the first one I released in February 2017. I remember how excited and terrified I was to release a pattern. What if I did all the math wrong? What if no one likes it? What if I have issues with people being able to download the pattern? It was intoxicating though - I think I sold m

This is not the first quilt binding tutorial that I’ve written, but this time I’m going to focus on how to make scrappy quilt binding. I get asked about this all the time! Darcy, how do you make your scrappy quilt bindings? This is how. This is how to make scrappy quilt binding. Before I go through the directions for how to make scrappy quilt binding, here are several previous quilts that have scrappy binding. This baby Carillon Quilt has several yellow fabrics in the binding. The Quiltville Mystery Grassy Creek has a blue scrappy binding. Hexie in a Hexie Quilt Pattern actually has a scrappy quilt binding built into the fabric requirements for the quilt pattern. Extra jelly roll strips made for a quick scrappy binding on this National Sew a Jelly Roll Day quilt project. And finally, this Baby Herringbone Quilt, where the scrappy is much more visible against the flannel backing of the quilt. Christmas Quilting The quilt I’m using for this tutorial is my recent Quarter Square Triangle quilt, which was made with a layer cake of Christmas Fabric. I was also able to scoop up fat quarters of three of the fabrics and that’s what I’ll be using as I teach you how to make scrappy quilt binding. These three fabrics all have the same print, but a variety of red, green and white backgrounds. How to Make Scrappy Quilt Binding Start by cutting 2½” strips. A scrappier scrappy quilt binding will have more strips that are shorter lengths, a less scrappy quilt binding will have less strips overall but each strip will be longer. Place one strip printed side up in a horizontal placement. Then, place a second strip face down, in a vertical placement along the right edge of the first strip. Overlap the ends of the strips by ¼” or so. Draw a diagonal line on the back side of the vertical strip, matching the points right where the two strips overlap. My pencil line does not show up in photographs, so I’ve added a thicker red line to the photo. You do not need a think or dark line that will bleed through, just enough that you can see it while sewing. Pin in place, sew directly on the line, and then trip ¼” outside of the line. Those little triangles are scraps to toss. Continue with another pair of fabrics. Once you’ve sewn you fabrics into pairs, sew the pairs into groups of four, and so on, until your binding strip is long enough for all four sides of your quilt, plus a little bit of overlap. I realized after taking these photos, they don’t show the background color differences as well as I imagined they would, so here are all the same steps with graphics. How Scrappy is Too Scrappy? For a scrappier binding, use shorter strips. I wouldn’t recommend going shorter than 5” for this type of binding, but I think about 10”-12” is just perfect! Once the binding is the desired length, fold in half and press. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks with a tutorial for how to machine stitch binding, but for now, here is a binding tutorial from my younger days when hand stitching binding didn’t leave pain in my hands and fingers.

A long, long long time ago last year I was keen to learn to crochet. I took on a project from a Better Homes and Gardens Mag and thought - sure I can do this! Well - totally overestimating my abilities I ended up with close to 300 squares of varying sizes (as per the pattern instructions) and well they just wouldn't come together. Since taking a few classes I have learned about so many of the mistakes that were plaguing my blanket but not wanting to just set aside the squares as a bad mistake - I have persevered and came up with an alternative version. My blanket is now 48 squares - all the same size. I made some of the smaller squares larger and vice versa to end up with a blanket that I am actually quite happy with. All this Brown Sheep Cotton fleece came from Tangled Yarns and was lovely to work with. I love the range of colours available and the matt look to the cotton rather than a fluffy texture you get from wool. Aside from dabbling in some crochet I have been quilting too - this quilt is a cot size quilt that I have named Rainbow Fizz and is one of the projects for Term 2 Sewing classes together with Claire Turpin Design. After using a Kona Solids Charm pack from Pink Chalk as the inspiration I set to turn the squares into triangles. I added in some white homespun and then hand quilted all the white squares in a co-ordinating Cosmo thread. Also finished recently was this Music Box - Oliver and S dress. My little one just loves it and it can't be washed and ironed quickly enough. And with Easter coming up I have been busy hand sewing lots of cute little Bouncing Bunnies which make great gifts at Easter time - especially as alternatives to chocolates and as great presents for all the teachers. You can get your hands on some in my Etsy Store. But if you are feeling crafty or want to get the kids involved you can buy kits to make them for yourselves

This is a tutorial for an easy Equilateral Triangle Quilt, with triangles cut using a rotary cutter. No template required. Finished quilt is a crib size, measuring approximately 40" x 60". For this quilt you will need: 8- 1/4 yard prints 1/2 yard white fabric 1. Cut all of your 1/4 yard prints into perfect 9'' strips. (1/4 yards aren't cut evenly when you buy them). Cut 2- 9'' strips from the white fabric. 2. Line up your 60 degree line on your ruler with the top of your 9 inch strip as shown above. (The top left side of the picture is cut off, but line up the point of your ruler with the point of your fabric.) Cut with your rotary cutter, as indicated by the red dash lines. 3. Line up your 60 degree line along the line you just barely cut. Now cut as indicated by the red dash line above. 4. Each 1/4 yard printed fabric strip should yield 7 equilateral triangles. Repeat for all 8- 1/4 yds until you have a total of 56 colored triangles. The white fabric will yield 14 white triangles. This quilt requires 70 total triangles. 5. Layout your triangles in 7 rows of 10 triangles each. Sew together. Be careful when sewing to match the triangle points together. Square up the edges if desired.
