A wonderful two color vintage Wild Goose Chase Quilt. The maker of this quilt, Elizabeth, inscribed her name on the back in ink. Elizabeth was a resident of Skaneateles, New York in the mid 19th century. A family descendent did not know what the "No. 19" meant below Elizabeth's signature. I thought possibly it could be the 19th quilt in her dowry? Or the No. 19 in the laundry rotation? The quilting design had me wondering whether it was quilted at a later date. Can you see the hearts in the muslin sashing? A heart motif is not one I've seen frequently on vintage quilts. The quality of the quilting stitch was definitely from a skilled quilter using fine stitches. Maybe the hearts do lend towards the theory of the quilt being part of a dowry. I was fortunate enough to have this quilt this past summer to clean for a family descendant of Elizabeth. The quilt was found in a storage area and had some red staining, possibly from a blanket or another quilt with unstable red dye. A contemporary reproduction of the yellow print in the antique quilt would be this print from ReproductionFabrics.com. Is this colorway making a comeback? The February 2013 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting has a two color quilt in a Churn Dash variation. While Butter Churn has a contemporary feel, the antique quilt is from the early 20th century. Since this colorway has been sporadic in popularity over time, it is nice to see some attention devoted to this happy colorway. Personally, I'm a fan of chrome orange. But then again, you're talking to someone with an orange front door, a living room painted in Pumpkin Spice (like living inside a pumpkin) and whose alma mater is the Orange.

Sometimes when I get an obsession is comes out of left field and hits hard. This is the case with my current love affair with antique quilts. I've always liked them, and have a couple of nice examples, but all of a sudden a few days ago I realized I really really want to collect them, in a big way. First, they're very useful- you never know when you'll need an extra blanket. Secondly, they're gorgeous and each one is unique. Finally, how can you deny the amazing craftsmanship and hours upon hours of labor that each one took to make. They're one of the most overlooked areas of folk art. Let's look at some pretty ones now! I'm currently crushing on this one on ebay A cozy little entryway with antique blue and white quilts here I absolutely love this bright stack of beautiful quilts casually leaning on a cheerful floral armchair An outstanding example with all the bells and whistles! Antique stoneware bowls, brightly painted cupboards, and antique quilts- A country dream come true! A spectacular example in greens, and oranges. Look at all that quilting! This little vignette is pretty as can be, but be cautious of displaying your antique textiles near windows. You'd be surprised how fast a little sun can steal away their color forever. A stunning staircase displays an impressive collection of quilts, blue apothecary bottles, and decoys. Utterly charming! This welcoming room, rendered in multiple shades of faded pastel is made all the more lovely with the hanging quilt display on the wall! I would love to display antique quilts on my upstairs bannister except that 1. we still don't have an upstairs bannister, and 2. my cats would consider is a personal invitation to rip them to shreds.

Inspired by a quilt that my friend Mary shared with me from Pinterest, I decided to design an Ombré HST quilt mathematically. This was the result. I chose to use a gradient of eight different values, numbered 1-8 from lightest to darkest. I began by drawing a 7 by 9 rectangle in my graph notebook and ...continue reading →
I have been finishing up projects right along, so it only seems fitting that I start one this week. I know, I still have more I could finish up, but really a girl gotta have some fun. This quilt started by cleaning/organizing some fabrics. I just loved the colors. It's not done, I've got to sew on the teal/white strip and I want another border of the dark grey. What I have done though is stitch out a couple of samples of what quilting I want to do on this quilt. Leah Day always quilts some samples to test out her ideas, I thought I would do the same. Infinity Tree - Leah's design # 365 I have always liked Leah's Infinity tree design. I think it will look good in the citron yellow blocks. This wood grain design is for the dark grey areas of the quilt. I think the medium grey will be paisley of some sort - to look like leaves. I'll have to play with that too. My own wood grain design. Hopefully, this will be a tree that hugs back. ;) Linking up today with Today, I'm linking up with Leah Day for FMQ Project Friday Color Me Quilty! Pat

A couple of years ago I stumbled across this awesome book at my local public library. It was filled with simple fun baby gift ideas. Today I couldn't tell you the title of that book. I did end up purchasing a copy during a library sale fundraiser but haven't a clue where that book is now. Hopefully I will now be able to find the book!! I'm also certain it is storage with the rest of my crafting books. But that's off topic. Every time someone I know is pregnant or has a baby, I make the same baby quilt. The one I found in that book. It is super simple to make, uses limited fabrics and comes together quickly. Wanna know how to make this wonderfully easy gift? You're in luck! One of my co-workers down the hall just had a little boy with his wife and I just haven't had time to make their gift until now! You only need three fabrics to make this little quilt. It is a great early tummy time quilt. You'll need the following cuts of three fabrics for the quilt top: Fabric #1 and #2: 1/3 to 1/2 yard (depending on direction of print) Fabric #3: 2/3 to 3/4 yard The final front will look like this diagram: You will also need an additional 1 1/2 yards of one of the fabrics for backing. To create this quit top: Cut 14 5.5" by 5.5" squares from both Fabric #1 and Fabric #2 Cut 8 10.5" by 10.5" squares from Fabric #3. Pair up Fabric #1 and #2 and sew together with a 1/4" seam to create 14 total rectangles. Be sure to press each to the same fabric on all. To pair them up, I just sit each stack of blocks next to my machine and stitch away. I also do not snip the threads between each rectangle until I sew all 14 rectangles. Chain sewing like this creates a steady flow and also speeds things up. Take your 14 rectangles and match them up as show in the above diagram. Your seams should be pressed opposite of each other and butt up precisely. Sew these all together using chain sewing using 1/4" seam. You will end up with a total of 7 blocks. You will now take the Fabric #3 and match it up with the created blocks of Fabric #1 and #2. I generally pin a pairing of five to chain stitch these. Finally I add in my third block to each row to do a final round of chain stitching to finish the rows. After all of the rows are sewn, sew each row together. Do pay attention to the direction of your print and placement. You should end up with this: (Ignore the other quilt! I was too lazy to take it down before I took this picture!) For this quilt since the fabrics are so busy and I enjoyed the straight stitching so much with the last one, I did it again using my secret weapon: painter's tape! (Thank goodness for the Dollar Tree and $1 tape!) I have still binding to add but that's a post for another day! How's your sewing going? Love, Ashley
