Your students will love making play dough balloons and popping them while practicing target sounds! You could also place them in page protectors to save time. → Color version suggested use: Roll play dough into little balls to start off the activity (I usually have this prepped but students also like to do this). Have the student say each target word and place a ball on top of each balloon. After they have filled up all of the balloons, they will “pop” the balloons by squishing the play dough and practice the words again (therapist will determine the number of trials for each word). → Black & White version suggested use: Students will use bingo dotters, crayons, or markers to color in each balloon as they practice the target words. These are great for homework pages! → Variations: • Use bingo chips to cover up the balloons after you practice the target words. • Use dry erase markers to color the balloons after your practice them. • Use small toys to place on the balloons after you practice the target words. A couple weeks back, we had our farm theme in PreK. One of the books I used was "Sheep In A Jeep" by Nancy Shaw (Amazon link here). While I was researching ideas on Pinterest (where else?) to use with this book, I saw this craft, which inspired this idea to make a jeep to use in speech to go along with the book! How cute did this turn out?! To make the jeep, just take a rectangular box and cover it with red paper (mine is covered with bulletin board paper that we have in the staff workroom at school). Fold all the flaps down except for one in the front for the "windshield." The wheels & everything else are just made from black & gray construction paper. What did we use it for? I used it for a beanbag toss with different farm animals. The sheep went driving and picked up his farm animal buddies along the way :) Here is a board from Boardmaker Share you can download for farm animal pictures. Some different ways I used it: Vocabulary: I used this to work on farm animal vocabulary. A lot of my kiddos can't name very many farm animals! The kids had to pick a beanbag and name the animal on it before throwing it into the jeep. You could also target this receptively with two or three beanbags out at a time, and tell them to "Find the sheep" or "Find the pig" before tossing in a beanbag. EET/Describing: For my older preschoolers working on describing (older 5s going into kindergarten next year), I had them pick a beanbag and describe the animal on it before tossing it in. Inferencing: This goes along with the vocabulary piece, but for some kids with basic inferencing goals (ie naming items when they are described), I described an animal and they had to guess which one it was. After they guessed, they found that beanbag and tossed it in. Increasing MLU: We worked on combining 3 words together while tossing the animals in.. "Pig goes in" "Horse goes in" or "Pick up sheep" "Pick up goat" etc... You could also use "Take out (animal)" when taking the beanbags out of the jeep! Articulation: I used this as a general reinforcer for my artic kiddos. They got to toss in a beanbag as they practiced their speech words. As you can see, there are a lot of different ways to use this activity.. and I am all about adapting an activity to target a variety of different goals! The kids really liked getting to stand up and move around a bit during speech-- their little bodies can't stay still for long! What are some of your favorite activities to use with Sheep in a Jeep? I have the hardest time thinking of short sentences on the spot when working on recalling sentences in therapy. I guess I just can't think and count that quickly! Here is a list of 3, 4, and 5 word sentences that you can use with any game or that you can send home as homework. I like to use games like Pop-Up Pirate that allow for lots of trials! Has anyone else noticed that it's harder for kids to recall questions than statements? I think their brains automatically want to answer the questions rather than remember the words. When you come across a fall themed book that engages each and every preschool speech and language student that you work with, you just have to share! I found this book to use during my Fall theme with my preschool students. It's called "Let it Fall." It is a simple rhyming book without many words on each page, but it has beautiful illustrations that are super engaging! I bought it for less than $3 on Scholastic.com! This book follows a family of five and their dog on their adventures in the fall. They rake leaves, go apple picking, go to a fall carnival, and go for a hike. The book allows for lots of discussion because of all of the activities that the characters are engaged in. Check out this page for some examples: On this page, I was able to help my language students expand their utterance length by stating what each person was doing. The dad and mom are both raking the leaves. The kids are jumping or laying in the leaves, and so is the dog. My articulation/phonological kids had fun naming items on the page. Mom, Dad, boy, girl, baby, dog, leaf, rake. There were words for everyone! This page is great too! Some kids are having a pie eating contest, some people are going on a hay ride, there are two men playing music, people are dancing, people are listening, there is a sack race, there is a pumpkin contest with a big pumpkin, the dog is sitting on the pumpkins. Oh, my! So many things to describe!!! Some of the words I used for my articulation/phonological students were: ton, pie, eat, sack, jump, hop, ride, (I have a lot of final consonant deleters) and really anything else we could find that fit their goals. The rest of the book is just as great as the pages above, and led to a huge variety of discussions based on needs in my groups. I just wanted to share this cute book with you in case you were looking for something fun to share with your preschool friends too.
