Special characters or glyphs can be accessed directly in Silhouette Studio if 1) the font is PUA encoded and 2) the user has Silhouette Studio Designer Edition and is using Silhouette Studio Version 4.1 or higher. In order to access the glyphs in Studio the font must first be installed on the computer and available in the Silhouette Studio Text Style list. Type out the text and change the font style in the Text Style panel. Double click in the text box to get the green box around the text. Place your cursor where you want the extra character to be placed. Delete any unwanted characters, if necessary. With the Text tool open, click the second tab to view all available extra characters for the font. Hover over the glyph to view it in an enlarged view. Click on the glyph you would like to open in Silhouette Studio and it will appear in the work area. If the glyph is to be added to an existing text box, place the cursor where you want the glyph to appear and select the glyph you wish to add.

Silhouette Studio V4.3 will move out of closed beta and into open beta soon. Once in open beta anyone can download and install the Silhouette software version. Among the new features of Silhouette Studio V4.3 is a subtle, but important change to the Page Set Up Panel. Along with selecting the page size and mat size in the Page Set Up panel, users will now first select the cutting machine they are using. After selecting the cutting machine, the drop down options for Page Size and Mat Size will only be relative to the selected machine. For example if you select that you are cutting on a CAMEO, you will not see the Curio size cutting mats available as an option. You would see the Portrait size mats though, as they can be used in the larger Silhouette CAMEO. If you select you are going to cut to a CURIO, you would not see the Portrait or CAMEO cutting mat options. Silhouette Studio V4.3 will go into open beta between May and July 2019. Do you love the look of small and intricate designs such as mandala cut files, zentangles, and thin fonts but often get frustrated when cutting intricate designs with Silhouette CAMEO? These tips for how to cut small letters on silhouette and detailed designs will help with prevent ripping, tearing, and bad Silhouette cuts. I love mandalas and zentangle designs and the Best of Wispy Willows Bundle on So Fontsy is filled with nature and animal inspired designs that feature some small & intricate cuts. The problem is they can be a real headache to cut when they're at a small scale. Even simple mandala SVG or studio designs be a challenge just due to the number of cut lines and small areas. The blade in your machine will often drag the vinyl as it goes down up and down and changes direction to cut out your design. So I have some tips for you today to avoid bad Silhouette cuts. Remember to adjust one thing at a time so you can figure out what is causing the poor cut to begin with...then you can use these tips to get the perfect cut each time. Thicken Small Letters and Intricate Designs Sometimes the design or text is just very thin and needs to be thickened. You can adjust this by adding a small offset around your design. The Offset tool panel can be opened from the right sidebar. It looks like a star. Using the Floral Arrows set from the So Fontsy Best of Wispy Willows Bundle, I created a small offset of just .002 to beef up the edges of the design a bit. This will thicken the lines ever so slightly so the blade isn't coming so close to areas it's already cut when it goes up and then back down. Delete the original design and keep the offset layer to cut. This is also the best technique if you're trying to figure out how to cut small letters on Silhouette but experiencing cutting issues. Create a Weeding Box Around Your Design Place a weeding box around your design. Use the Rectangle tool to draw the box. A tightly cut weeding box means you have less vinyl that's 'pulling' at the design when you go to weed it. Slow Your Speed - Just a Little Bit The next thing you should adjust for smaller and intricate designs is the speed of the cut. Go into the Send Panel and adjust the speed to anywhere from a 1-3. Slower isn't always better. Sometimes when the design is being cut too slow the vinyl gets stuck on the blade for a split second and is then moved out of place. But if the speed is SLIGHTLY faster it doesn't have time to catch. Play around with the settings to find what works best for you. Turn On Segment Overcut in the Silhouette Studio Send Panel Be sure to turn on the Segment Overcut option in Silhouette Studio's Send Panel (found by clicking "More") and adjust the distance to at least .1. The segment overcut forces the blade to pick up and create a new line at corners rather than pivoting, helping to prevent the vinyl from tearing. Reduce the Force Lowering your force (ie. pressure) of your blade will stop the vinyl from tearing as it's being cut. A sure sign that you need to back off the pressure is if the vinyl backing is getting marked up like this: Use a Sticky Silhouette Cutting Mat Make sure your cutting mat is pretty sticky when you are cutting vinyl. A sticky cutting mat will hold vinyl in place and stop it from shifting around while it is being cut. This applies to all sizes of cuts. Use a Graphtec CB09 Blade The Graphtec CB09 Blade is my preferred blade when cutting small and intricate designs. The angle of the blade goes into the vinyl at a slightly different angle than the regular Silhouette ratchet blade or Auto blade which prevents the vinyl from being torn. It is also called a carbide blade. Tag Your Files So You Can Easily Find Them If you are using a MAC, you can tag SVG files by right clicking on the file and select Get Info. Then type your tags in the space below the name. You can tag the JPG file so I like to save that with my SVG. Then right click on the JPG image and choose Properties -> Details. Click on the Tags field, which is under Description. How to organize fonts in Silhouette Studio V4. A new feature that helps categorize fonts...but is limited for users.

****************************************************** This article refers to Make-the-Cut (MTC) v4.1.0 and Silhouette Studio Designer Edition (SSDE) v.2.2.0d, and reflects my personal observations about the MTC and SSDE software. ****************************************************** I have used Make-the-Cut (MTC) since the day it was released in December 2009, and the Silhouette Studio program since April 2011. I have been using the Silhouette Designer Edition (SSDE) since September 2011. Since the release of the MTC-Cameo plug-in last December, many of you have written in to ask for my recommendation. Should you purchase MTC or the SSDE in order to cut SVGs with your Silhouette cutter? Even though I have not used SSDE for as long as I have MTC, I have come to like the software a lot. It is easy and fun to use. However, I do find that the program is limited in terms of the features that it has to offer compared to MTC. Here are some of my favorite tools in MTC that I have noticed are not available in SSDE : Layers: If I have to pick a feature of MTC to be my favorite tool, it has to be Layers. By putting the different elements on different layers, you can easily control which ones to cut or hide. While there are also ways to "hide" images in SSDE, personally I find it more convenient to use MTC's Layers than to have to drag the images off the virtual mat like in SSDE. MTC example of Layers Pages: I can save multiple pages of the project in a single file. For example, in my recent Cowlendar project, I had to save it in 4 files in SSDE: 1 for Jan-June, 1 for July-Dec, 1 for the covers and 1 file for the backing. If I had used MTC, I would have been able to condense that into 1 file (with 4 pages). MTC example of Pages Alpha-tracing/Palette-tracing/Color-Tracing: There is only 1 method of tracing in SSDE (Pixel-tracing). In MTC, the user can trace using Alpha-tracing, Palette-tracing, and Color Tracing, IN ADDITION to Pixel-tracing. These other methods of tracing are very useful in times when Pixel-tracing just can't give a good trace of the image. Import Multiple SVGs: MTC makes it really easy to import SVGs. Just click on the SVG button to import the file. When using the File>Import, or File>Merge commands, SSDE defaults the Files of Type to the native .studio format. It is a huge hassle to have to change that for the other non-studio files to show. Although you can overcome that inconvenience by opening the folder where the SVG is stored and drag it onto the virtual mat, you will still only be able to drag/open one SVG at a time. MTC allows multiple SVGs to be imported at the same time. This is useful when the project is made from several different SVGs. Allows Temporary Font Installation: I don't like to install fonts that I do not use frequently. In order to use a font with SSDE, I have to install it on my computer. On the other hand, MTC allows me to load fonts temporarily for use without having to install them. Export as SVGs and other formats: In my opinion, this feature of MTC alone could possibly justify the use of MTC over SSDE. The only format that the Silhouette Studio programs allow the user to save the file in is the proprietary .studio format. Since all .studio files can only be opened in Silhouette Studio program, any user-created designs cannot be used by any one who does not use Silhouette Studio. On the other hand, MTC allows your designs to be saved as a .mtc file or be exported as SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, JPG, and PNG. Wrap text and objects to path: Even though SSDE (and the regular Silhouette Studio program) includes the wrap text feature (for example, place words around a circle), MTC has gone one step further and allow for wrapping of text OR objects (e.g. stars, hearts, etc.) to a path. MTC example: Wrapping Hearts to a circle. Use with many different cutters: You can only cut to the Silhouette SD or the Silhouette Cameo with the SSDE program. With MTC, you can cut to many different cutters including the Black Cat Cougar/Lynx, all Klic-N-Kut machines, Pazzles Inspiration, Craftwell eCraft, and more. While I am primarily using my Cameo now, I like that I can use MTC with all these other cutters. Should the need ever arise so that I have to use a non-Silhouette cutter (e.g. crafting at a friend's house where she does not own a Silhouette cutter), it is good to know that I still have the option of using my MTC to cut to many other cutters. screenshot taken from the MTC website. Free Updates/Upgrades: I paid $49.99 for the Designer Edition Upgrade. My initial purchase price of MTC is the only cost that I have to pay. I pay $0 for all MTC updates and upgrades. --- The features of MTC that I have mentioned so far are just some of what I use most often in the program. There are many other tools in MTC that are not available in SSDE (e.g., Jigsaw Generator, Lattice Creator, Conical Wrap, Vertical Text tool, etc.). For a more detailed list of what MTC can do, please click HERE. Having said all that, I must mention that there are some features in SSDE that are not available in MTC. For example, while you can use the Join command to integrate one cutting path into another, currently there is no Group tool in the MTC program. In my opinion, MTC is also not able to handle textures as well as SSDE. While I cut most designs using MTC, I prefer to use SSDE for my Print-and-Cut projects. Despite that, I find that the benefits of using MTC outweighs its shortcomings. While SSDE is a very good program and has its own merits, personally I find that MTC is a lot more versatile. SSDE retails for $49.99 and MTC can be had for $58.36. For the price difference of less than $10, I would certainly choose MTC over SSDE. But then again, why listen to me? There is a new svg loaded as of 3/17/2018 as cricut stopped picking up the fill in the pink flowers this newer svg works in that case. Elements are separated on one svg, and layered in another svg. Would make a cute shirt, sign, decal. This is a SVG file that you can use to cut vinyl, paper, etc. You could also create a printable file from this as well. the separate png is for a large printable it is sized at 24 inches. Great for a nursery or child's bedroom. The zip file includes a png, pdf, svg, dxf' All fonts have been converted to paths. Cricut Design users-sometimes the import blows the design off the mat and makes it larger. To get the design on the mat make sure the you have all selected. Set the x to 1 and the y to 1 set the Length of your design to 11. You should see the design on the mat. There is no physical product. Commerical License- My commerical license is that you do not sell the files themselves. You are allowed to sell anything you personally craft or make. Pod use is not allowed. Not just my dxf files but the dxf files in general. You will need to revert to a legacy issue of Silhouette Studio, trace the provided png files, or upgrade to designer.

I've had quite a few requests for this and have finally adapted my Yin Yang Valentine Card into a printable version, which is easier for hand cutting. The two hearts still tuck under one another and open up nicely. The flower blossoms no longer need to be intricately cut because they're printed now, saving time. Another printable benefit is the ability to type in your own text above and below the red heart on the inside. I've also added a matching envelope which fits the square card, since square envelopes are uncommon. In order to achieve the finished size of 5" x 5", the card needs to be printed double-sided on a sheet of 11" x 17" (tabloid) card stock. This can be done at Kinko's or a local digital printer. One card fits on one sheet. The envelope needs be printed on an 8.5" x 14" (legal) size sheet.
