Hi Crafty Friends, Welcome to our December Karen Burniston Designer Challenge. Check out Karen Burniston's blog on Wednesday (US Time) when you will be able to see what all the designers created for the challenge this month, plus Karen will have an amazing video tutorial to share with us all. Our challenge theme this month is ... "NAUGHTY OR NICE?" - Make a Christmas card that incorporates a stocking. This can be the Stocking Pop-up or the Holiday Charms stocking or the Fireplace Extras or whatever you can dream up! Here is a quick video to see my card in action. As you can see by the photos above, I created a Christmas themed Slimline Pop-up card for this month's challenge. Besides being Designer Challenge time, it is also the start of sneak peeks for the release next Monday 11th December, so I couldn't resist adding at least one new die to my card. For the pop-up portion of my card I used the new Raising Platform Pop-up die set for the top pop up on this card. I added the "Ho Ho Ho" sentiment from the Small Script - Christmas die set to the label. I made my slimline card to measure 3 3/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches to allow for the Raising Platform Pop-up. The bottom pop-up uses the Stocking Pop-up die set, I like how both pop ups can be used together to create a double pop-up card. I added more sentiments from the Small Script- Christmas for the "Holly Jolly Christmas" to the left panel of the pop-up. When the card is opened, the content of the stock is revealed. Besides using the present, bow & candy cane to the inside of the stock which are all from the Stocking Pop-up die set. I also used the bear from the Winter Animals die set and the foliage from the Holiday Charms die set. For the front of the card I used the fireplace from the Fireplace Pop-up die set and the Fireplace Extras 1 die set. I had to cut the sides of the fireplace down a little so it would fit onto the width of the slimline card. For the sentiment, I used the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow die sets.

Hello crafty friends ... It's time for Karen Burniston's September Designer Challenge, and this is KB's challenge for the Design Team: Theme: "IN THE WILD!" - make a project incorporating an animal made by stacking the Bitty Ball on the Surprise Ball. I have a YouTube video for you where I go over the details of this fun Pop Up Halloween Card! Instead of the other way around, I stacked the larger Surprise Ball on top of the Bitty Ball for a 'big headed bat'. I'm not really a fan of bats, but this fella is pretty cute! I went over all the details in my YouTube video, so won't put them here as well - but I did hand cut the wings and my #16 elastic had 5 knots to make it work for the Bitty Ball. I didn't add google eyes or any other bulky element to my card, and it really does fold down flat enough to go through the mail with one extra stamp! The Design Team is posting all of their fun projects for the challenge and you can check them out on the right of my blog, where I have their blogs linked. Karen Burniston will have her post tomorrow (Wednesday) on her blog: https://karenburniston.typepad.com Supplies: 1131 Bitty Ball Pop Up - Karen Burniston 1117 Surprise Ball Pop Up - Karen Burniston Brad #16 Elastic bands Sakura white gel pen Glimmer Mist - Tattered Angels 1139 Animal Add Ons 1 - Karen Burniston Patterned paper - Anna Griffin Seam Binding 1118 Flap & Closure - Karen Burniston Large Puffy Brad - Recollections Bakers Twine 1058 Halloween Charms - Karen Burniston 1055 Ovals Crosshatch - Karen Burniston Vellum Black brush marker 1014 Halloween Scene - Karen Burniston Wink of Stella Card size - 7 x 5" Thanks for stopping by today
Happy New Year!!! The title of the first Designer Challenge of 2024 is "Raise It Up!" We were to make a card of any theme, using the brand-new Raising Platform Pop-Up die. I had a request from a friend of mine to make a humorous birthday card for her 80-year-old friend. I took the opportunity of this month's designer challenge as a starting point. Art Impressions stamps has a line of humorous "Girlfriend" stamps which I love. They were perfect for this request. Remember: the Raising Platform Pop-Up was to be used on today's card. Obviously, it's on the inside. I confess that I used the Katherine Label die rather than the die that came with the Raising Platform because it's just a little bit bigger, giving me room for all those stars (part of the Raising Platform die set) and the numbers. I did, however, use the label from the Raising Platform set for the sentiment at the bottom, which sits on top of the border created using two of the borders from the Border Blends sets (Party and Trims). Just as a bit of trivia -- I used red as the primary color for this card for a particular reason. I Googled "color for 80th birthday." While birthday numbers don't really have a particular gemstone, one of the responses I got back was: As ruby is the gem for an 80th anniversary gift, it could also be used for an 80th birthday. Thanks for stopping by today to look at my Designer Challenge card.

The life, times and paper crafting of Karen Burniston.
I am a huge fan of Karen Burniston's pop up dies but will admit that some of them take more time and effort than others. I love to make an easy pop up card like these that are sure to impress the birthday boy or girl, and I show how easy these are to make in my new video here. The newest release by Karen Burniston included two add on die sets for the Lorna Label Pop Up die and as I show here they can be used with or without the pop up die. But of course the real magic happens when the card is opened: It is much easier to see the pop up motion in the video of course but here is a side view showing the Piano Pop Up attached to the Lorna Label Pop Up with the famous song "Happy Birthday To You". I chose a side view even though there are some shadows so you can see how the two pop up pieces attach. I show step by step how to do that in the new video. One of the hardest parts of cardmaking for me is to pick out different color combinations that look good together. But now it is easy because I have Sarah Renae Clark's Color Box and I chose this color combo for the piano pop up card I made step by step in the video: I had great fun playing with the new pop up dies from Karen Burniston and hope my cards will encourage you to give some of the ideas and products a try1
Hello and Welcome! It's Designer Challenge time once again and this months theme is Wedding or Baby! For my card, I used the Surprise Cube Pop-Up to create baby blocks. For this card, I started with a card base of 5 x 10 3/4. I created a 1/4 in folding point in the center to make room for the blocks. I added the flap using the Flap & Closure die set and made the "buttons" on the flap and front along with bakers twine to create a closure for the card. I added patterned paper I had from a baby themed patterned paper pack. For the blocks, I used 80lb smooth white cardstock and added blue and white to each block. I used the Alphabet dies to cut out the word baby in a sparkly blue cardstock. I also added some baby themed die cuts to the other sides of the blocks using the Baby Charms die set. I had a star shaped die set and cut several different sizes of stars out in different colors of blue cardstock that I had in my scraps. I die cut one big star and used Honey Bee Stamps Inside: Welcome Baby Sentiments to create the sentiment on the large star. Then I used Distress Ink in Peacock Blue to add some color to the edges of the star. I tried to keep the background and the front of the card simple, because the pop-up blocks are really the center focal point in this card. I double checked twice the positioning of the blocks before gluing them into the card base, ensuring that they would fit perfectly. For the front of the card, I kept it simple, using the Rectangles - Crosshatch to created squares and Lawn Fawn's Little Bundle stamp set to create the baby images and sentiment. Thank you so much for stopping by and Happy Crafting

Hello everyone, It’s challenge time with the “Crazies” over on the Crazy 4 Challenges blog. Being a brand new month it is time to introduce a new challenge hostess which is Danielle Lounds. Apparently yesterday was Peggy’s Mums birthday and as Peggy is often late when sending out cards, she has challenged us to create a Belated Birthday Card. I recently purchased this fun Fish stamp set from Art Impressions which I wanted to play with .. so I made this work for the challenge. First up I used the Simon Says Waves Stencil to create the background on my card and then I created a double pop up card using the Lorna Label Pop Up dies designed by Karen Burniston’s for Elizabeth Crafts Designs. Here is a close up of the left hand side of the card … the bubbles around the fish are from Elizabeth Craft Designs Rubber Duck die set. I wanted to make the the sentiment into a “belated” sentiment so I cut the “It’s Your” from the top of the sentiment … computer generated “Belated” and then stamped the sentiment around it. For the front of my card I have again created the background using the waves stencil and added two of the fish and some seaweed which is the Elizabeth Craft Designs Flourish with Flowers die. Don't forget to check out the rest of the “Crazies” cards over on the Crazy 4 Challenges blog and also their individual blogs for more details. We are all supposed to be staying inside our homes to reduce the spread of this horrible coronavirus. I have been using that time to play with some new (and old) stamps and dies. I recently purchased a series of bee stamps from Honey Bee Stamps and used it on my card for today -- along with one of my favorite Karen Burniston die sets, the Photo Collage Pop-Up. The front of my card uses part of a Beehive Card die along with a set of stencils. There are four stencils in the set, but I used just two of them on my bee hive. I love the way you can cut the opening to see the little Cottage Cutz bees on the inside. The inside is where the fun happens. Aren't those Honey Bee bees adorable. I love the fact that the faces are on separate stamps, so that you can change the expression as you want. Here's a little video showing how the collage mechanism works. I've made many cards using the Photo Collage, and I have a feeling that I will be making many cards with those cute bees!

Hello Crafty Friends and welcome! It's Designer Challenge time and our theme for July 2024 is Set Sail! We were challenged to use the new Boat Pop-Up and its add-ons to create a card of any theme. For my card, I created a lighthouse scene! For this card, I started with a 5.5 x 5.5 sized card base using a dark blue cardstock. I then cut two squares just slightly smaller (5 3/8 x 5 3/8) from a wavey blue patterned paper. I started by making the light house. For this, I used the Topper Tags in the smallest size for the base of the light house. Then I added a small rectangle using the smallest rectangle in the Rectangles and Labels - Crosshatch die set. I added a railing using the railing from the Pirate Ship Add-On. For the window/light area, I die cut the smallest square in the Square - Crosshatch die set and trimmed it down, then drew on the windows. For the top of the light house, it's the top of the topper tag I used for the bottom just trimmed smaller and then I added a small square piece. The tiny ball on the top is from the die that to you slip the oar into in the Boat Pop-Up. For the door and window in black, I used the Mushroom Tiny House Add-On and the Church/School Tiny House Add-On. I die cut most of this from smooth white cardstock then colored it in with Copic markers. I used a size 10 white Gelly Pen to add some shine lines to my light house. Once I had my light house complete, I made a small bam box using the Small Scenes Bam Box Pop-Up and black cardstock. I glued this to the back of the light house and set it aside. I then started working my my sail boat. I used patterned paper I had for the boat and floor. Then I die the sails and all the accessories for the sail boat from white cardstock or scrap cardstock I had in my stash. I colored the sails in with Copic markers. I took two pieces of scrap grey cardstock I had on hand and tore it to make rock areas for the inside of my card. One, I glued into the top left hand corner. The other, I stamped a sentiment using the new Sail Away sentiment stamp with VersaMark Ink and white embossing powder. Then I glued that piece into the bottom right corner of my card. I added my boat and my light house, making sure that it didn't go over the edge of my card. Lastly, I die cut four fish from the Camping Charms and colored them in with Copic markers. Once I glued them into the card, I added Glossy Accents to them for extra dimension. For the front of the card, I just created a fun paper square area using different kinds of sailing paper. Then I stamped a sentiment on the front square using the Sail Away stamp set. I really love the new Sail Boat Pop-Up! You can make any kind of boat you want and the add-ons are amazing!!! Thank you so much for stopping by today. If you would like to see how to make the light house, let me know by commenting below and I will make a YouTube video. Happy Crafting!! Hello and Welcome! It's Designer Challenge time again and our theme this month is Bejeweled! Adding some bling to my cards isn't something I normally do, so this took me out of my comfort zone a little bit and to be honest, it was fun! For my card, I used glitter gel and assorted colored gems to give my flowers some sparkle! This card was a special order card for a very good friends 70th Birthday. For this card I used Karen Burniston's Flower Pot Pop-Up along with the Flutter Charms and the Happy Birthday die. I started with an A2 sized card base using 80lb smooth white cardstock. I found a pretty patterned paper from Carta Bella that was a light green color. Using the Rectangles - Crosshatch, I die cut three rectangle panels from this paper. I found a pretty pink/peach colored cardstock in my stash of scraps and used that to cut out the flower pot and the inner panels that hold the flowers. I also used a scrap patterned paper to cut out the front of the flower pot. I die cut all the flowers using a heavy weight smooth white cardstock and colored them in lightly with Copic markers. I wanted the centers to have color but the tips to be white. I added a brown center and then added a little colored gem to the center of each flower. I die cut the leaves and added detail to them with my Copic markers. Then I die cut the tiny pink flowers from pink cardstock, added some detail to the center of each flower and used my Heartfelt Creations flower shaping board to add some dimension to each little flower. Then to finish them off I added a sparkly white gem. I die cut the butterfly, bee and dragon fly and added them to the flower pot. I also die cut the Happy Birthday twice, once from pink cardstock and once from black and glued them together to make the sentiment pop. Then I added glitter gel to the sentiment. I die cut the 70 from Spellbinders - Birthday Wishes for Everyone using purple and black cardstock and glued them together. From there I added the same glitter gel. I die cut a small rectangle for signing and one with a stamped sentiment on it from MFT called Anything But Basic Birthday Wishes. I added a few more flowers around this sentiment. This card turned out so pretty! I haven't used the Flower Pot Pop-Up in a while, but it is so worth all the effort put into it. The card itself is thick, so I supplied a 5x7 envelope so I know it will fit properly and without bending the card. Also, this card isn't being mailed, so the thickness doesn't matter in this case. Thank you so much for stopping by and Happy Crafting!

Hello and welcome! Todays card is extra special to me because it's inspiration comes from my big fuzzy Bernese Mountain Dog, Angus! I finally bought myself the Bitty Ball Pop-Up from Karen Burniston and let me tell you, I kick myself for not getting it sooner! As soon as I seen the how to video on YouTube and Karen Burniston made a dog using the Bitty Ball, I knew I had to make Angus. But a Bernese Mountain Dog isn't just one solid color. They are black, tan and white in different areas of their bodies, so I got out my Copic markers to help me out. First step was to cut out 4 black pieces to make two bitty balls. From there I needed to plan out where his face was going to go. I cut out four trapezoids and one hexagon using the dies in the set and 110lb white cardstock. I glued these on to the head of my dog. Then with a pencil, I lightly sketched out where the white stripe on his head runs down to his face and nose. He has a bit of tan on his face, around his mouth so I sketched that out as well. Then with a black Copic marker, I began filling in with the colors I needed. I die cut the four pie shaped pieces to make the nose out of black cardstock and I cut the eyes out of white cardstock and colored them brown with Copic markers. I die cut the arms and feet out of white cardstock and added black and tan fur to the arms and black fur to the feet. For the tail I die cut two pieces, one black and one white. Bernese Mountain Dogs have long haired tails that kind of look like a fan. So I added a white end to the black tail and with my scissors added little cuts to look like fur. I die cut out two pieces with black cardstock to make the ears and with my scissors added little snips to make the ends of the ears look like hair. I used white paint and carefully painted between the trapezoids where the black cardstock shows through so that his face looks solid white. I added glossy accents to the eyes and nose, then once that was dry I added white highlights with a white Gel Pen. I die cut out the mouth with black cardstock and using the smaller oval, cut out a pink tongue. I had to trim it down to fit the mouth. I cut an A2 card base using Kraft cardstock from My Favorite Things. I had a small 6x6 paper pack from Doodlebug Designs called Puppy Love and used the orange cardstock with little dog bones on it for the background paper. I used a piece from the same pack with had grass on it and cut that out using the MFT Slimline Grassy Hills Die-namics. I added the Happy Birthday sentiment from Karen Burniston using a glitter blue cardstock. I have to say, I am super proud with how this little guy turned out. I hope you find him as super cute as I do. Thank you so much for stopping by and Happy Crafting!

Hi Crafty Friends, Welcome to our June Karen Burniston Designer Challenge. Check out Karen Burniston's blog on Wednesday (US Time) when you will be able to see what all the designers created for the challenge this month, plus Karen will have an amazing video tutorial to share with us all. Our challenge theme this month is ... "MINI SLIMLINE" - create a card in a mini-slimline size of 3.5" x 6". Being a lover of Slimline and Mini Slimline cards, this challenge was right up my alley! Of course being a Karen Burniston challenge, I wanted to include some form of pop-up inside of the card. Many of Karen's dies will work inside of a Mini Slimline. Until recently one thing that wouldn't work was the ball dies, specifically the Surprise and Bitty Ball dies. However with the release of the Mini Ball last month we can now include those in slimline cards if you wish. I turned the mini ball into a birthday cake, at 3 1/2 inches wide you need to be careful what "extra" pieces you add to then mini ball for it to fit inside the card. I was able to do a monkey last month inside a 4 inch slimline card. For the layers of my card, both on the inside and front I used the new Short Rectangles - Crosshatch die set, using the largest rectangle included in the set to die cut my panels. I also used the Long Flap and Closure die set to create the flap to my card which helps to keep the card closed. To decorate my "cake" I added a ribbon trim using one of the border dies included in the Border Blends Trims die set. The candle and presents are all from the Big Birthday Charms die set. On the back panel I added the birthday sentiment using the Happy Birthday & Happy Birthday Shadow die sets. The Happy Birthday was die cut using pink glitter paper. To decorate the front of the card, I added four presents using dies from the Big Birthday Charms die set. I also used the Mini Alphabet die set to create the HB2U on the flap.

Apparently, May is Photo month, and the Crazy4Challenge challenge this week is to include something that relates to photos this week . . . a card including a real photo, faux photos, selfie style stamps, cameras, etc. One of my favorite Karen Burniston dies is the Photo Collage Pop-Up, and one of my favorite book/movie franchises is Lord of the Rings. I combined these two loves on my card this week. Kindred Stamps has a few stamp sets that were perfect for my card. See some more photo-related cards over on the Crazy4Challenges blog.

Hi, I needed to make a birthday card for a friend and it has been a while since I had made a Cake Pop Up using dies by Karen Burniston so I started there. I also love the colors in this MFT paper Pack ( which is retiring right now) so used it for my color scheme. I love how easy it is to create this pop up card and it always looks impressive. Below is the front: Dies used are by Karen and Stamps and Paper is MFT. Here is the card opened up! And a closer look at the cake.... Supplies I used are linked below, Thanks for stopping by today! The life, times and paper crafting of Karen Burniston.
Hi all! I'm so excited to share a card I made with a few of the dies from Karen Burniston's latest release. There are so many incredible dies in this collection - you are going to want them all! For this card, I used the new Oval Frames Pop Up die, the new Argyle and Party Border Blends, and the Rectangle - Crosshatch die from an earlier release. On the front of the card, I used the Rectangle die to cut a panel of canvas paper. On top I layered a collage paper from Tim Holtz. I used one of the new Border Blends (you are going to LOVE these!!) along the bottom. I used one of the ovals and a frame die from the Oval Frames set for the center embellishment. Here is the inside of the card - amazing, right?! As you open the card, four oval panels drop down and pop out, and the center two frames form a 3D accordion. You really have to see this one in action! The die set includes a small tree, which I used as branches for the fussy cut birds to perch on. Along the top, I used another one of the new border dies. The frames on the ovals were embossed with silver embossing powder to give them a metallic look. Here you can get a better idea of how the frames pop out. It's seriously cool and surprisingly easy to use. Check out Karen's tutorial video on the border dies and prepare to be amazed!! I hope you enjoyed my first card from this new collection. The dies are available now for preorder and will ship on the 31st. You can order the supplies I used via the links below. Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a great week!
Hello and Welcome! Today's card features Karen Burniston's Flip Frame Pop-Up along with My Favorite Things stamp set - Saddle Up & Celebrate. For this card, I started with a A2 sized card using Lawn Fawn's Ground Coffee cardstock. I used blue gingham patterned paper from Echo Park called Fun on the Farm as my background. I aged the edges of the patterned paper using Simon Says Stamp Cappuccino Pawsitively Saturated Ink and a blending brush. I die cut the frame for the Flip Frame Pop-Up, using some scrap kraft cardstock. I added a black background using the largest rectangle frame from the set. Then I cut out the smaller frame from Neenah Classic Crest smooth white cardstock. I stamped and masked my images the way I wanted, then colored them in with my Copic markers. I stamped the remaining images I wanted to use for this card on the same smooth white cardstock and colored them in with Copic markers. Then I used the coordinating dies to cut the stamped images out. I die cut a small rectangle from the same Ground Coffee cardstock as the card base and one from white cardstock to create an area for the sender to sign the card. I also created a second frame for the other side of the card using the dies from the Flip Frame set and adding wood looking details to the frame as I did with the flip frame. I did this using a Copic marker and loosely creating lines on the frame. I used Karen Burniston's Word Set 2 - Birthday Die Set and cut out the "make a wish" sentiment to add to the bottom of the card. For the front of the card, I continued the same theme, adding another flip frame and more of the images from the MFT Saddle Up & Celebrate stamp set. I die cut the "Happy Birthday to you" sentiment from Word Set 2 - Birthday Die Set as well and added it to the frame. This was my first card using the Flip Frame and it was incredibly simple to put together! For a more thorough walkthrough, click here to watch Karen Burniston's assembly video.
