Inside: A collection of Cinco de Mayo activities and lessons for home or school. Cinco de Mayo is a weird day if you’re a Spanish teacher. On the one hand, you might recoil at the mass production of stereotypes: sombreros, margaritas, and moustaches will undoubtedly abound May 5th. If you choose not to teach about Cinco de
Here's a fun, creative way for your students to practice using context clues to identify the meaning of an unknown word. It includes worksheets and a craftivifty! I choose to do this around Cinco de Mayo (in early May), but there are materials included so that you can do it at any time of the year! (I include two title boxes... one mentions Cinco de Mayo, and one makes no mention of a particular holiday.) Worksheet- Students begin this activity by completing two worksheets that contain 15 items. For each item, students are given a word in Spanish. They must first identify an English word that looks similar to this word and write it on the blank. Then, they read the accompanying sentence to determine whether their guess was correct or incorrect. Activity- Students copy the Spanish words from the worksheet onto the candy wrappers. Below the Spanish word, they write the English translation. When finished, they color and cut out the title box, candy pieces, and pinata. Finally, they follow the student-friendly directions to assemble the craftivity. The finished products make a unique May bulletin board or a fun school hallway display! Check out the PREVIEW for a better look at this product! Here's what teachers like you had to say about using this activity with their students: ⭐️ Candice P. said, "This activity was so much fun! My class is comprised of students from all over the world. They loved seeing how similar their native language and English could be. We had an absolute blast with this activity. Thank you for creating this resource and I would certainly recommend it to others." ⭐️ Sonya T. said, "My students really enjoyed this activity. I will definitely use it again and again." ⭐️ Jacqueline M. said, "I LOVED this activity and wish there was more like it! What a fun way to practice context clues." ⭐️ David E. said, "These projects are great. They always get compliments from the teachers passing in the hallway." ⭐️ Abbie U. said, "My kids loved this craftivity! They enjoyed learning Spanish while also working on context clues!" As the end of the school year quickly approaches, you may want to consider these fun projects to keep your students engaged during those last few weeks of school!
