Confucian teaching of “Hara hachi bun me”, tells people to eat not until they’re completely full, but until they’re 80% satisfied.
腹八分目 - Hara hachi bu (Hara hachi bun me) An Original Sumi-e style Fine Art Print. This piece was originally a commission, and I created it for a great friend of mine looking to practice moderation. I feel I am lucky to be allowed to make it available to others. The practice of Hara hachi bun me, or Hara hachi bu, is the practice of moderation. It asks us to eat only until we are 80 percent full. This practice in Zen philosophy dates back to at least 1300. There is another, similar proverb from Japan that says "eight parts of a full stomach sustain the man; the other two sustain the doctor" as mentioned by Philip Kapleau in his 1989 book “The Three Pillars of Zen: teaching, practice, and enlightenment”. New York: Anchor Books. pp. 43–44. To find out more about Hara hachi bun me, you can check-in with Wikipedia, but other sources may be more enlightening: wikipedia.org/wiki/Hara_hachi_bun_me Printed on 310 gsm, eco-friendly, acid-free paper with a lifetime of over 100 years.
