Gustav Klimt was one of the first artists that I discovered on my own… making his work all the more special… personal to me. I was enthralled with the decorative or ornamental elements of his work, his use of unconventional formats, and of course… as a horny 20-year-old… the eroticism of his paintings. -Portrait of Sonja Knips -Judith -Garden with Sunflowers -Danaë -Attersee With time, I put Klimt on the back-burner and rarely thought about… let alone looked at… his work. When I returned to painting figuratively some 6 or 7 years ago I found I could no longer ignore him. A fascination with pattern and decoration, fashion or costume, the use of gold leaf in Byzantine and Early Renaissance painting, tall narrow formats, and the female nude were all elements that I shared in common with Klimt. I cannot deny that Klimt ranks among the ten or so artists who have been the most influential upon my own work. -The Three Ages of Woman ******************************************************************************************* Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His primary subject was the female body and his works were often noted for their use of allegory and the frank eroticism… quite daring for the time. Klimt was born in Baumgarten, near Vienna, July 14, 1862. His father, Ernst Klimt the Elder, was a gold engraver. Gustav’s two younger brothers, Ernst and Georg, went on to enjoy successful careers as artists. Klimt initially studied Architectural Painting at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. Klimt and his brother Ernst studied under Hans Makart, Vienna’s foremost history painter of the time. The two brothers and their friend, Franz Matsch, began working together and by 1880 they had received numerous commissions as a team that they called the “Company of Artists”. They also helped their teacher in painting murals in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Klimt began his professional career painting interior murals and ceilings in large public buildings on the Ringstraße, including the Vienna Opera and the Kunsthistorische -Steps of the Vienna Opera -The Kunsthistorische In the early 1890s Klimt met Emilie Louise Flöge who, notwithstanding the artist’s relationships with other women, was to be his companion until the end of his life. His painting, The Kiss, is thought to be an image of them as lovers. -Emilie Flöge - Portrait of Emilie Flöge -Woman in Scarf and Hat (Emilie Flöge) -Portrait of a Woman (Emilie Flöge?) In 1892 Klimt’s father and brother Ernst both died, and he had to assume financial responsibility for his father’s and brother’s families. The tragedies also affected his artistic vision and soon he would move towards a new personal style. In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to create three paintings to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. His three paintings, Philosophy, Medicine, and Jurisprudence (destroyed during WWII) were criticized for their radical themes and material, and were called “pornographic

Version française qui suit Alan Caswell Collier RCA, OSA (1911 - 1990) was a painter, commercial artist, illustrator, muralist and educator. He was born in Toronto and, with the exception of a residency in New York City from 1937 to 1942. His primary medium was oil, however he has done some watercolors, acrylics and ink drawings. His subjects are Canadian landscape, cityscape, mining, industry and portraiture. His style is realist with a focus on composition, texture, volume and light. Collier began to show an interest in art at age 12. From 1929 to 1933 he studied at the Ontario College of Art. He furthered his studies at the Art Student's League in New York in 1937, working at mines during the summer to fund his education. In 1939 he found work in New York as an advertising artist, but moved back to Toronto to work as a sheet metal worker in 1942 after marrying fellow Canadian Ruth Brown the year prior. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943, and upon his return from the war in 1946 he again worked as an advertising artist in Toronto, but focused more on his painting and less on his commercial art. His landscapes are known for their well-defined sense of form and strong compositions stripped of extraneous detail. In 1951 Collier started doing a series of paintings of underground mining, one of which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. He was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1952 and began teaching advertising art at the Ontario College of Art in 1955. The following year marked the first of many summer sketching trips taken with his family to various parts of Canada, including British Columbia. He began painting full time in 1967, and a retrospective of his work was held by the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in 1971. He traveled to the High Arctic to paint with the Polar Continental Shelf Project in 1984 and 1985. Collier work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Frye Museum in Seattle, among many others.
