Being a private SLP that travels to see children in their homes and schools definitely has it's perks. I love the one on one attention I can give each child. I also love being able to see them in their environment and really work on language experiences that are important to them. Plus, no car duty! But like any good thing, there are also drawbacks. For example, today we are expecting a tropical storm and the roads are flooded. So I am home with a cup of coffee blogging... well I guess that's not such a bad day. But in all honesty, one thing that has been difficult for me is keeping good data records while being in a new place every hour. I really love when students can keep track of their own data. It gives them a sense of ownership and motivation towards their goals. When I was working in the schools I had data charts that the students worked on weekly displayed on the walls. I can't really wallpaper my car with those. So after brainstorming ideas, I came up with mini goal tracking books! These goal books are small and kept together on a binder ring. But they pack all the punch of what I was missing from my classroom. On each data ring I have a graph for each individual goal I set for them as well as a written goal set by the student. The student set goal is probably my favorite page of the book. It gives me a really clear picture of why each child thinks that he/she is in speech and what is important to them to work on. Maybe it's working hard on their /r/ sound when they read out loud in class or maybe it's using good social skills at lunch. If it's important to them, it's important to me! The individual goal graphs have been a total timesaver when it comes time for re-evaluations. It's so convenient take out that particular student's goal book to report on goals. I have been guilty of falling into a rut of working on the same goals for a long time and neglecting others. Since each goal page has it's own page on the ring, it's very easy to see which goals still need to be addressed. Win, win! Since these goal books are small, I have been able to keep them in a small container with a lid. That way they don't get messed up and don't take up much space while being stored in my car. One of the best things about being a speech-language pathologist is the variety of work settings to choose from. Holding the CCC affords SLPs the flexibility to carve out a niche many settings such as schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities; private practice, academia and corporate.
With only two years in the profession as a certified speech-language pathologist, I started in the schools not knowing if the workload is overwhelming or just the norm. The 2013-2014 school year was my clinical fellowship experience. I excitedly trudged my way through the paperwork system, found my footing as a therapist and emerged with nothing but wind in my sails.

I packed up my classroom (that had been my home for the last 4 years) and decided to leave the school system as an SLP. Instead, I have ventured into the world of private therapy that would allow me more time at home with my family. Believe me, it was a nerve racking decision, but it has been the best decision I could have made for myself. However, with that decision, came some big adjustments. I no longer had my classroom where students would come to see me, instead I am now a traveling SLP. I decided to write a post about a few things that I have found to be essential to me these days (besides lots of coffee, of course!) My #1 essential is a BIG therapy bag. My old bag just wasn't cutting it anymore considering I had to bring enough materials for 4-5 kids at a time. Although, to be honest, I'll find any excuse to order a new bag! I found this Super Organizing Tote from Thirty-One Gifts and it has been a lifesaver. Look at how easily I can fit Ned, Candy Land, my iPad, planner, therapy binder, notebooks, books, etc. and still have some room to spare. Aaaah-mazing! The second essential can almost go without being mentioned... a *good* planner . What may be considered a "good" planner varies depending on who you ask, but the one pictured above has been my go-to brand for years. I love that the mint color is trendy now. I adore that color (you should see my house!) In addition to a good planner, I rely on pencils these days. My schedule changes quite frequently... but that's the beauty of getting to make your own schedule. Last but not least, my 3rd essential... my iPad case with a keyboard! I don't know why I waited so long to get one if these. Being on the go and away from my computer, I primarily use my iPad for emails. I strongly disliked having to type emails by pecking at the touchscreen. The keyboard is connected with bluetooth and can be turned on and off with the flip of a switch. I found this case at TJ Maxx for $49 but you can find a ton online (I wish they had a prettier color in stock!) What are some of your essentials?

I know I typically write about some topic related to child development but I thought I would take a detour this month and write about my first experience participating in the ASHA schools conference. The reason I think this is important is because so many SLPs out there are school-based or work primarily with pediatrics and my experience at the schools conference this year was a very good one full of great insight into various topics, issues and research on child development.
We all have a tree of knowledge that represents the intricate experiences that make each of us different and wonderful. Our branches stretch, flower and die only to grow into a more complex labyrinth of information. Once this tree is rooted in ideals, it is difficult to pull out any of the roots, especially if they have been supporting a perfectly healthy tree for many years.
