This essential meditation manual for the Western reader shares step-by-step guidance to elevating your meditation practice and discovering greater peace and insight. The Mind Illuminated is a comprehensive, accessible and - above all - effective book on meditation, providing a nuts-and-bolts stage-based system that helps all levels of meditators establish and deepen their practice. Providing step-by-step guidance for every stage of the meditation path, this uniquely comprehensive guide for a Western audience combines the wisdom from the teachings of the Buddha with the latest research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Clear and friendly, this in-depth practice manual builds on the nine-stage model of meditation originally articulated by the ancient Indian sage Asanga, crystallizing the entire meditative journey into 10 clearly-defined stages. The book also introduces a new and fascinating model of how the mind works, and uses illustrations and charts to help the reader work through each stage. This manual is an essential read for the beginner to the seasoned veteran of meditation.
Guided Reading in French? I interviewed Mme Eliane and she shares all about using Guided Reading in the French classroom!
Looking for a fun, engaging game for your French primary students who are learning to read words in “chunks” and blend them together? Faire de la pizza en fusionnant will help them practice those skills in an informal setting - which will then transfer and help them when they are reading new words in their books! This resource includes: One "pizza" (print as many copies as you need so that each student in your small group can have one) 108 "toppings" cards to choose from 108 word cards to match the toppings (each word is pre-divided into "chunks" for students to read) How to set up the game: Print and laminate one pizza for each member of your group, and as many cards as you like. I would not suggest using ALL of the cards in one game - that would be a very long game and would take up a lot of space! I divided the cards for my own class into three “levels” - easy, medium, and hard. Then I can grab the set I need depending on my group. You may also choose to highlight all of the sons composes on your cards before laminating. How to play: Lay out all of the “toppings” face-up on the table. Keep the word cards in a pile. Show one word card at a time to your group - you can have one student read the word while another looks for the picture on the toppings card for a non-competitive version, or have both students read and whoever finds the correct card the fastest gets the topping. The words on the word cards are written in “chunks”. These chunks may or may not be the same as the syllables in the word. Reading words in chunks helps students decode them faster - it is way easier to read bigger words (like dinosaure) as di-no-sau-re, rather than d-i-n-o-s-au-r-e! We want to encourage our students to look for chunks in words when they are reading, and to then blend those chunks together. This will help them decode bigger words in their levelled reading books, too! *For below-grade level students not yet ready to read: You can still use this game! I use this game with my lower students to work on their ability to hear syllables in words and put them together. So, I read the word slowly, in chunks, and they have to put together the sounds they hear into the correct word, and find the picture. This is a first step to helping them be able to blend chunks they will later decode themselves together. My students LOVE this game and beg to play - and I hope yours do, too! See a picture of it in action in the preview! Looking for more resources to help you teach letter sounds and/or decoding? Check out the resources below! Enseigner par la comptine! Using rhymes as a teaching tool in the French classroom! Nous nous rappelons certainement des comptines apprises au primaire! Ceci est parce que la comptine s'ancre facilement dans notre mémoire, grâce à sa sonorité. Super pour développer la mémoire, le vocabulaire, les structures de phrases et la conscience phonologique. Lorsque l'enfant apprend à reconnaître des mots qui riment, ceci l'aide beaucoup à apprendre les sons, ce qui aide énormément avec la lecture et l'écriture! For years, I used "comptines" in my classroom. I am a super high energy teacher who thrives on student participation so I just loved the chanting! I loved the fact that by the fall, my students already knew several rhymes so when I wanted their attention, I chanted or sang the first line and within seconds, I had the whole class chanting with me. At the end of the "chanting" I had their attention!! I could then give instructions, start a new activity, etc. However, I found that some of the "comptines"/poems I found had difficult words or sentence structures. I was teaching in a French second language classroom. After all, I wanted to teach sight words and basic sentence structure. I did not want students to chant something they did not understand! I did not want them to chant or read words that they would never use again in their daily writing and reading. SO, a few summers ago, I was helping my daughter get ready for her first job (grade one teacher!). She knew the passion I had for "comptines in the classroom". Together, we started creating our own comptines, each one with a common sound, each one loaded with sight words and basic structures that students UNDERSTOOD with words that they would be expected to use DAILY while reading and writing. Oh...and why not create tons of activities where students would REUSE and REUSE and REUSE these sight words and this common sound so that it would become part of the baggage they would carry with them forever! And this is how and why I started creating these COMPTINES! Check out some resources from this collection by clicking on the images. Présentez la comptine le lundi et permettez aux élèves de pratiquer à la réciter toute la semaine. En encourageant les gestes, l'intonation et l'expression, ceci aide beaucoup la fluidité en lecture. Les élèves peuvent signer l'affiche lorsqu'ils peuvent réciter la comptine. Je fais un tirage le vendredi et l'élève chanceux amène l'affiche de la comptine à la maison! Quelle motivation :) Ils adorent ceci. FYI, most teachers buy one "Comptine" and realize quickly that they just NEED the BUNDLE. Here are some BUNDLE options: Click on the image below to view the complete collection of 16 resources, each containing an original poem and tons of literacy and even some math activities to help students learn during the whole year! Amusez-vous à enseigner par la comptine! Here is what one teacher said about this resource: "I hummed a lot about purchasing this product, but it was well worth the money. Very thorough with all the sounds, and as we all know finding engaging French activities and lessons can be tough. All the sounds and fun little comptines to help the students learn are fun, they love them. I catch them repeating them throughout the day. I love the differentiated lessons, very helpful." Here is a smaller BUNDLE option. This BUNDLE has 5 resources for "Les sons simples".

Looking for a simple, efficient way to help warm your French primary students up for reading in a way that is aligned with the Science of Reading? As lower elementary teachers, we all know the struggle of not having enough time to fit it all in during our reading lessons! We also know that our students need explicit, targeted practice with blending sounds together to make words and syllables. Whether your students need help being fluent with single letter sounds or blending them together, this warm up resource has cards to benefit all your students! It’s quick, simple, and easily differentiated depending on your groups. Plus, your students will love trying to climb their beanstalks as fast as they can. How to prep this resource: Print out and laminate the cards your students will need. There are cards for uppercase & lowercase vowels and consonants, syllables (consonant + vowel and a couple vowel + consonant), and sons composés. You can also print out the cover pages to help keep you organized. I like to punch a hole in the top corner of each card, and keep each set on their own binder ring for easy, organized access. How to play: Give each student in your group a beanstalk card that contains some letters/sounds that will be easy for them, and some letters that might be tricky. Students will start at the bottom of the beanstalk, and read each letter/syllable as quickly as they can. If they get stuck, you can help them, but they go back to the bottom and start again. Once a student makes it to the top of the beanstalk, you can end the game or give them another. My students love when I set up a sand timer and they see how many they can read before the sand runs out! Some students may find the letter cards too tricky, if they don’t know many letters yet. That’s why you’ll also find an editable page at the end of this resource. When you open the resource using Adobe reader, you will be able to type any letters, syllables, or sounds you want (up to three letters per circle). For struggling students, you can easily personalize the game - just choose 2-3 letters to type in the circles (1-2 they know and 1-2 they don’t), and have these target letters repeat up the beanstalk to ensure everyone can find success! **If you want your letters to look like mine, you will need to download the (free for personal use) font KG Primary Penmanship. You can find it on TPT by clicking right here. Check out the preview for a closer look! Looking for more resources to help you teach letter sounds and/or decoding? Check out the resources below! When I started at my new school last year, I came into a new reading program. I was used to doing almost all of my reading instruction WHOLE CLASS, but my school uses a guided reading model all the way up to 5th grade. I definitely had to rethink my reading block! I had done centers in the past, but wanted a really clear way to maximize the time and make the transitions clear for the students. Here's how I do my guided reading block! ROTATIONS We have Guided Reading/Centers Monday-Thursday from about 1:10-2:00 and I rotate through four groups. This means each center is 12 minutes long, with about 30 seconds for a transition. 12 minutes can fly by, so the students have to work on getting those transitions DOWN. I found a FANTASTIC resource by my friend Kristen of Chalk & Apples, and it has made centers SO easy. There are tons of different icons that can be easily swapped out on different days or weeks. I change mine up all the time! In a typical week, I do guided reading with leveled passages on Monday and Wednesday, and we do literature circles on Tuesdays and Thursdays. GROUPS My students are grouped according to DRA levels, because that is what my school uses. You might use AR, Lexile, or another measure. I have four groups: Low, Low-Mid, High-Mid, and High. Each group has a number, but I assign the number randomly so it doesn't match up to skill level in any way. I have 24 students in my class this year, so there will be 6 kids in each group. If you have a larger class, you can still make it work by having your higher groups work on their own while you work with a lower group and just check in! GUIDED READING I LOVE this close reading resource from Fifth in the Middle. I bought the entire bundle so I have TONS of options. Each reading comes in four reading levels, but they are on the same topic and look the same so students don't notice. There is also a paired text that I try to use for morning work toward the end of the week. There are several pages of activities for each passage, and I often have the students start these at the table with me after we've read the passage out loud. When it is their turn for guided reading, the students come to me at our back table with a pencil and a highlighter. I give them their sheets for that day and discuss what we will be looking for while we read (unfamiliar words usually) and we begin reading. I like to make sure each child reads, so however I have to break it up to make that happen. After reading through, I ask them to scan through again to find specific information. This changes week to week, so one time it might be looking for transition phrases, and another it might be looking for dates to create a timeline. Then, we talk about what everyone found and work on putting together the information on the worksheet. I, of course, provide a lot more scaffolding and support to my lower readers, while my high readers are able to do the activity on their own. LIT CIRCLES On the days that we have literature circles, the students still come to the back table with me, but this time they bring their lit circle book (which varies) and their lit circle binder. In their binder, they keep all of their jobs and their reading schedule. I have used about a GAZILLION resources for lit circles (including online blogs), but this one from Pocketful of Primary is my absolute FAVORITE: It is SOO easy to adapt to groups of different sizes and I found it very user-friendly for both the kiddos and for myself! I organize the jobs using a hanging file I found on Amazon. You can find it here: THE OTHER CENTERS So what do the kiddos do during their other blocks of time? Here's some options I cycle through: STAPLES: Partner Reading Each student has a partner from their reading group that they meet up with for this activity. I typically use "I Survived" books or similar short chapter books. I stock up through Scholastic! I have 6 shared books for the entire class, and I place a sheet inside the front cover so the students can write their names and where they ended each day they read. I always have new books ready to go for the students who finish. I do this strictly for fluency, so I don't do quizzes or worksheets. Silent Reading (KBAR) In my class, we call silent reading KBAR- Kick Back and Read. When we do a whole class KBAR, I sometimes take it outside. Spelling (Spelling City) I typically use Spelling City for centers, but sometimes do a worksheet instead. Vocabulary (Quizlet)Quizlet is AMAZING. I love using this for vocabulary! The students really enjoy it as well. Keyboarding (KWT) This is a tough one since monitoring the students' finger placement is so important. I don't do this OFTEN as a center, but throw it in now and again. Writing If we are working on a longer project (such as the state report), I have the students use this chunk of time for that. Otherwise, I sometimes provide a prompt or allow them to free write. Here's one of the resources I use: NoRedInk If you've never used this site, CHECK IT OUT! It's one of the best ways to get some extra grammar practice into your day! Be aware that the initial set up takes a bit of time because the students have to select a bunch of their favorites from different categories: books, tv shows, movies. What's neat is the site uses their preferences and their name + their friends' names when building the practice sentences. The kids get a kick out of it! Task Cards (small group) Students work with their reading group and record their answers on individual answer sheets. I have a huge selection of task cards that I keep in one of these bad boys from Michael's: Cursive (Can Do) I love that my school teaches cursive, but in fifth grade, we don't have a lot of specific time for it. To keep the kid's practicing, I assign pages from our cursive book during centers. Reading Comprehension (Reading Plus) We use Reading Plus, but there are many online reading comprehension sites. Use whatever your district provides or what works for your class! Games I will occasionally throw in a review game for the kids to play with their small group. The key is they have to be short and not too loud! Comment below if you have other questions or want to add some advice on running smooth ELA centers with Guided Reading!
