The 2nd Grade Reading Comprehension and Fluency Passages with Questions product contains 10 reading passages (6 fiction and 4 nonfiction) that target both COMPREHENSION and FLUENCY. Each passage is presented twice, in 2 versions, and it's followed by a True/ False sort. You can use this product both as a PRINTABLE and a DIGITAL RESOURCE. You can select the pages you want to assign to Google Classroom! The students will have to: *read each text 3 times and color a star after each reading ( for fluency) *answer text-based questions and color the evidence in the text ( in the first version) *write and answer their own questions about the important details in the text ( in the 2nd version) * cut, sort, and paste sentences that use details from the story on a True/ False chart I used a narrow font to fit a passage and three comprehension questions on the same page and make it easier for the kids to work with the text. Suggestion: * Work on reading the passages and answering the questions in small group, then use the True/ False sort as an independent activity * Students have to read each passage 3 times, so I would suggest choral reading the 1st time, partner reading the 2nd time, and independent reading the 3rd time * Ask the students to answer each question using a complete sentence * Then ask the students to read their answer to you or to a partner and PROVE their answer by COLOR-CODING the EVIDENCE in the text (= the sentence within the text that has the answer) Differentiation is easy: use the 2nd version to challenge your higher 2nd graders. Asking questions is actually a requirement of the Common Core Literacy standard RL2.1. You'll be amazed by what kind of questions the kids can come up with. MY students love to ask their own questions! Story titles: 1. A Visit to the Zoo 2. Hannah's Crayons 3. Tiger Sharks 4. The Little Puppy 5. Rocky and Nutty 6. Lazy Bear 7. Astronauts 8. Bill and Phil 9. Lions 10. Whitetail Deer Answer keys included! Common Core Standard: RL.2.1 and RI.2.1: ASK and ANSWER such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text You might also like: 2nd Grade Reading Comprehension Passages Set 2 Are these passages too easy for your students? I have a new favorite chart! I found this on pinterest and knew it would be great to use during the first week with my new little first graders. Amanda (the smartie who made this) from First Grade Garden graciously allowed me to share a printable I made to go along with her anchor chart. I was so busy my first week that I never got around do doing this activity with the kids, so I'm saving it for one of those days when I think they need a big reminder about being good listeners. Also, I may tie it in with a writing lesson on labeling. Click the image to download this document.

Hello Everyone!! 2014 is almost here! We are staying home, safe and sound in our living room this year! I am so happy!! We had a houseful of love and laughter this past week with both boys and friends here, and frankly, I am pooped!! It feels good to not have to cook, clean, dress up, and be "on" for a few hours!! But at the same time, I miss them already!!! I do, finally, have a minute to show a couple of pics from the week before winter break. One of my favorite days was our Grinch Day. We love celebrating the special message that Dr. Seuss illustrates in this infamous story! Here are a couple of pics! The kids went all out with grinchy green spirit! The grinch sent some sweet little elves to check on our kindness and make sure we learned from the story! Jolly, Joy, and Jingle made their debut and will probably hang around throughout the new year!! A yummy green snack was mysteriously left for the kids!! This amazing team really gets into every celebration!! I also wanted to share with you something our room moms made for our classrooms!!! The kids brought gift cards to clip onto this amazing snowman tree!! We have the best room moms around!!! When we get back from winter break we will be studying the historically significant and amazing life of Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the World. I put together a little unit about her, integrating social studies and ELA. Here are a few pics from the 17 page unit. For your own printable unit on Eleanor Roosevelt, click here!! Another thing we will begin studying is the science concept of living and nonliving. I have shared a mini unit on this topic before, but I revamped it a bit, so I'm offering it again! Here are a few pics from the 9 page unit. For your little living/nonliving unit click here!! I hope these little offerings will help your 2014 get off to a good start. Stay tuned for a little somethin' somethin' later in the week!! Till then, be safe and warm tonight. Welcome 2014!!! Joyfully! Nancy

Hello Everyone! One wonderful perk about the 15 hour drive home? I was able to put the finishing touches on my Landforms unit. This unit is coming up in our curriculum, so I'm glad I had time to organize and put everything together. This mini unit includes almost 70 pages of learning centered around exploration of landforms. There are some social studies activities (of course), some ELA (abc order, vocabulary, antonyms, written expression), some math, and a couple of craft connections. I hope you can use even a small part of this. Here are a few pics of the unit. Landforms book inspired by AIMS curric. Unit includes patterns! mystery picture includes clues with mixed math practice If you are interested, please click here for your free unit! Well, spring break is almost over. I have missed my kids so much!! Can't wait to see them! But that's going to have to wait one extra day as I have jury duty tomorrow. Thank goodness for a wonderful substitute teacher who just so happens to be a dear friend. My kids are in good hands!! Next up? Natural resources and geometry units! Stay tuned!! As always, thanks for taking time to take a peek! I appreciate each and every one of you!! Take care! Joyfully! Nancy

I love this activity, and it's one of my best sellers! This cut and sort activity is great for all ages, and can be done individually or as a group. I typically completed this activity with my second graders after a read aloud at the beginning of the year (such as "Do Unto Otters" by Laurie Keller). It's such a great activity to build classroom community, and even build cut and paste skills! It's a great activity to encourage being a good citizen during Social Studies, also! While I mentioned second grade, I've had other grade levels purchase and use this item also. It's never too early (or too late!!) to review and discuss being a good citizen! :) Simply download and print!
Challenge your child to match each noun on the left-hand side, with a strong descriptive word, otherwise known as an adjective.
My new obsession this year has been making and using anchor charts for my lessons. Here are just some of the anchor charts I have made this year. Some of these charts are original ideas but many are ideas I have seen and used from other teachers. I am not good at drawing so I use clipart from my computer to add pictures to my anchor charts. I print them out and glue them onto the chart! It’s so much easier and looks so much better than what I could draw! I also laminate my anchor charts so I can use them year to year. By laminating the charts I can easily write and erase on them by using an Expo marker. Can you believe October is already half way over? Oh-my-word....does time fly or what!?!? Since November will be here by the time we blink a few times (not literally), I thought it was time to bring out the Halloween themed goodies. I introduced contractions today and decided it would be a good idea to incorporate them into my center rotation next week. So, like I always do, I went to Pinterest for inspiration and low and behold I found the most perfect and cute idea (which was expected)...Pinterest never lets me down! So, I sat down at my desk, pulled out my bag of candy corn and began to work on....Candy Corn Contractions! I'm sharing with you my creation. Click on the picture below to download! Students will color the candy corn to replicate an actual piece of candy. The bottom will be yellow, middle orange, and top white. They will then pick one word from list one and one word from list two. On the white part of the candy corn they will write the word from list one. On the orange part of the candy corn they will write the word from list two. Then they will combine the two words to make a contraction and write that on the yellow part of the candy corn. I'm going to let them outline their words with a sharpie (this alone will help them to finish...like it's magic or something!). Haven't decided if I want them to add arms, legs, and eyes yet. What do you think?? Here's my inspiration photo: I may just bribe the kiddos with some actual candy corn...if I don't eat some all of it first! It always seems you get better results and harder work when they have something to look forward to! Next week we start our bats unit. I got a little head start the other morning and had them trace their hands to make bats. Here is a preview of a little 'batty' hall decor. "We're Batty for 1st Grade!"

Well first off my little bloggy venture with Ffion from The First Grade Jungle is up! Please go check it out and enter in our giveaway! We are super excited about it! Second, since I have been absent for sometime now I figured I would catch you up and unload everything I have been storing on my camera. This means picture overload! Sorry. Generating Questions before reading (inspired by The Inspired Apple) Character Glove thanks to inspiration from Debbie Diller. I use this during small group as well. New workstation I added this year: Overhead. So far my students can write their words, make their words with magnets or letter tiles. I will be added sentence strips I made which I will print on transparencies and students can fill in the blanks. (Hopefully I will add this to TpT soon!) I just purchased the clear tiles and then wrote letters onto the tiles. Very simple and the kids LOVE this work station. Writing/ Handwriting Workstation. This will be transitioning into only writing next week. Another new workstation I added was the Non-Fiction Reading Station. I really wanted to promote my students to read to find out new information about a topic. I added a variety of books on various levels. I discussed with the students that they would still need to use the "good fit book" strategy to find books to read during this time. This year my kids REALLY love the Poetry Work Station. They get upset if they do not have time to finish and illustrate their poem. Love it. ABC/ Word Study Workstation Library Work Station Anchor Charts: Behavior Chart And a little reminder… Happy Monday :)
