Jolanthe from Homeschool Creations created this fantastic interdisciplinary, multi-skill printable gardening unit that would be perfect for spring and learning about the Earth. Featuring twelve colorful activities, here are a few of the highlights {as always, you'll have to visit Jolanthe's site for the full scoop}! Photo Source: homeschoolcreations.com Scissor Skills. In this exercise, students help 'water the flowers' by cutting on the line in order to connect the watering can to the colorful blooms. Jolanthe provides two scissor skill worksheets that can be printed onto different weights of paper to provide exercise variations. For additional fine motor practice, you might also consider laminating a copy of each worksheet, or sliding them into a plastic document sleeve, and placing a copy in the writing center along with a dry erase marker or crayon to use for tracing. Along with building hand strength, coordination, and learning how to properly hold a writing tool, the activity also provides pre-writing practice. Photo Source: homeschoolcreations.com Writing Patterns. While similar to the activity extension above, this pattern writing worksheet offers much more complex pre-writing practice - helping students practice directional movement, apply proper hand position, recognize the difference between drawing and writing, etc. Print onto the back of recycled worksheets or laminate for use with dry erase crayons. Photo Source: homeschoolcreations.com Colors & Shapes in Bloom. This activity is great because it requires your students to practice several concepts/skills at once - shapes, colors, color word recognition, and shape word recognition. Cut the descriptions from the flowers, inviting students to match the pieces, or have your students paste the blooms into a booklet, highlighting the color words and circling the shape words {or both!}. Photo Source: homeschoolcreations.com Parts of a Flower. With this fun puzzle worksheet, students will learn new vocabulary words and about the basic parts of a plant. First, invite students to construct the flower, placing the cards in the correct order, then match the appropriate vocabulary words to each part. Once they've had exposure to the words, have them play memory/matching games with the flower and vocabulary cards. Photo Source: homeschoolcreations.com Story Sequencing. This activity goes along with the book, Jack's Garden, by Henry Cole. After reading the story, invite your students to take these story event strips and put them in the correct order. This can be done as a class, in small groups, or as an individual assignment. These are just a few of the incredible activities Jolanthe has in store for your kiddos in her gardening unit. Be sure to visit her blog for more information and for the free download! Happy Learning!

Wise Mind integrates the concepts of reason, emotion, and wisdom to describe an individual's thoughts and behaviors. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the Wise Mind concept represents a state of mind where a client can make decisions and act in a way that balances rational thinking and emotional thinking. The Wise Mind DBT handout begins with an explanation of what Wise Mind is. Next, it explains the components of the Rational Mind and Emotional Mind, including the Wise Mind as the overlap between them. A Venn diagram is used to illustrate the Wise Mind concept to enhance a client’s understanding. Learning about Wise Mind helps kids and teens understand the value of combining both emotional thinking and rational thinking to make good decisions. When discussed in a therapy group or classroom, they can engage in self-reflection by doing a collage activity by cutting out images and words from magazines that represent rational thinking and emotional thinking. After completing their collages, kids and teens can share what they created. This handout pairs well with our 5-page DBT Wise Mind worksheets, which allow for a more in-depth application and reflection on the Wise Mind concept. *This item is an instant digital download. Many families wonder about end-of-life signs and worry about the physical changes that will occur in the days and hours before death.
Last year I set a goal to have Brooklyn be able to get her Good Canine Citizen award. Well if you spend more than two minutes around my dog you will instantly know we didn't reach our goal. She is a catalyst of bad behavior. So this year my goal has been for her to walk in Nashville's Christmas Parade with other Nashville Pitties. I always do a lesson on goal setting, but what good is a goal if you aren't organized enough to ensure the steps are in place to meet it? My goal for Brooklyn was a lofty one, in fact it was too big. So we are reorganizing to reduce the stress of dog and mother. This reorganization made and the stress I put on myself to accomplish made me think about how I could change my lesson on organization. After a lot of brainstorming and about 5 drafts here is my new lesson for 4th Grade on responsibility and organization: Lesson 1: We started with a scavenger hunt. I gave teams either an organized back pack or a messy back pack and a list of items. I started the timer and they were off. Most of the teams with organized back packs finished the scavenger hunt within 2-3 minutes and the teams with messy backpacks anywhere from 4-8 minutes. They really got into this, especially because I hid stinky socks, cereal, stuffed animals, and toys in the messy backpacks. Next we discussed that if you were organized that would save you about 2 minutes per day, just enough time to recheck your work, 14 mintues in a week, enough time to read a chapter or two in your new favorite book, and about 56 minutes a month, enough time to watch an entire episode of their favorite Disney show. We ended with a pre-test of work habits so they could identify what they specifically need to improve on. Lessons 2/3: We talked about responsibility and what it means. We watched the video "I Can Do It! Taking Responsibility" which shows the students different scenarios and allows us time to stop and discuss each one. Next we charted what kinds of responsibilities they had in 4th grade. We then role played different responsibilities (the examples are from AIM Education) and in teams practiced what we would do. For example: A new movie you and your best friend are dying to see has just opened up, and your friends wants the two of you to see it this Saturday. The trouble is, your science project is due on Monday, and you and your project partner agreed you would spend Saturday gathering plants in the park. What should you do? At the end of each skit we talked about the different feelings that come with responsibility: stress, disappointment, frustration, etc. That lead us to the postcard activity. I laid several postcards around the room each with a different picture on it. I asked the students to (in silence) find a card that represented how they feel about starting fourth grade and the new responsibilities they are taking on. When everyone had a card we broke into small groups and shared the card we choose and why. Next I asked everyone to set 3 goals for themselves: 1) Something they could accomplish this week. 2) Something they could accomplish in the next 2 months. (I like to remind them of their work habits pre test here) 3) Something they wanted to accomplish by the end of this school year. We then shared our goals with our small group and then with the entire class. I collected the cards and will give them to our students in two months with a personal check in note written on each. **In the past I have done this icebreaker with my faculty and with 6th grade. They filled out the card like an actual postcard and I mailed it to their homes half way through the year. Lesson 4: We continue our talk of responsibility and stress. First in groups they draw what it feels like to be stressed. Then each group shares and we look for similarities that we all have. Next we watch the Brain Pop on stress and at the end they go back to their drawings and surround themselves with things they can do to help alleviate their stress. To finish our series we take the same work habits post test and see if we have improved! Since I only see this grade once a month this 4 part series starts in Sept and ends at Christmas break. Before I know it the sleigh bells are ringing!

Decatastrophizing is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) technique designed to challenge and alter catastrophic thinking patterns, which can reduce emotional distress. Identifying thoughts related to worst-case scenarios — e.g. “I made a mistake, and I’m going to get fired” — and questioning them can help clients develop a more realistic outlook in life. The Decatastrophizing CBT Handout serves as a practical tool for clients to recognize when they might be catastrophizing. It begins by defining this technique and then offers tips to practice it, such as challenging their initial thought and considering other possible outcomes. Using this handout allows kids and teens to cope more effectively and build their resilience. A helpful tip for parents is to make decatastrophizing a regular part of their child’s routine. For instance, they can place this helpful Challenging Negative Thoughts poster on their wall as a reminder. This handout is included in our CBT Handouts Bundle along with common cognitive distortions, CBT techniques, and psychoeducation. *This item is an instant digital download.
