The illustrations are probably the work of a renaissance artist or a Briefmaler, a particular letter painter, who also would have written and embellished official documents and painted rich coats-of-arms. In many instances, the names of the tournament participants are written above them. They are armed for the Gestech (German tournament), the joust fought with blunt lances. This rare Turnierbuch such as provide an invaluable record of the jousters' colorful costumes, fanciful crests, and humorous, often satirical emblems that decorated the jouster's shields and horse trappings. This rare manuscript was bought in 1921 by a French collector, and today is part of the MET collection (The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York). In appendix we have insert 16 wonderful color plates from the German reprint book of 1918: Hans Burgkmair des Jungeren - Turnierbuch vom 1529.

Sofonisba Anguissola, late Renaissance painter best known for her portraiture. She was one of the first known female artists and one of the first women artists to establish an international reputation. Among female painters, she was unusual in that her father was a nobleman rather than a painter.
Stefan Lochner was a German painter working in the late International Gothic period. His paintings combine that era's tendency toward long flowing lines and brilliant colours with the realism, virtuoso surface textures and innovative iconography of the early Northern Renaissance. Based in Cologne, a commercial and artistic hub of northern Europe, Lochner was one of the most important German painters before Albrecht Dürer. Extant works include single-panel oil paintings, devotional polyptychs and illuminated manuscripts, which often feature fanciful and blue-winged angels. Today some thirty-seven individual panels are attributed to him with confidence.[1]

German Saxon court gowns of the first half of the 16th century, made famous by painter Lucas Cranach's ladies, have one particularly defining feature: a plastron (brustfleck) with a decorative band at the top and a laced-over bottom (usually white, but not always). I've been studying this style for more than a year, trying to work out the construction. After looking at many, many portraits,...

Adam and Eve Item # 2577112 Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer was as well-known for his artwork as he was for his dedication to math and theory. The German painter and philosopher used both pools of knowledge to create pieces inspired by math, measurements, and numbers, often leaning towards a Gothic style. His collection of works include iconic religious paintings, as well as portraits and sketches. Albrecht Dureros engraving, Adam and Eve, exhibits the extraordinary detail and tonal range of which he was capable. The print's meticulously described landscape and its symbolism are derived from late medieval art, while Durer's fascination with the canons of classical proportion and anatomy (Adam is posed like the Apollo Belvedere, while Eve recalls classical statues of Venus) comes from his study of Italian Renaissance art.
