This hearty beef goulash is made easy in the slow cooker. All you have to do is brown 2 ingredients then add everything to your slow cooker to cook for 4 hours (or 8 on LOW if you're out all day). Goulash hails from Hungary and is also often eaten in other Central European countries. Dating back as far as the 10th century, it's not always a stew: sometimes it comes in the form of soup. What makes this the best beef goulash? A stovetop beef goulash is always a treat, but we think all the flavours really come together when they're cooked slowly over a low heat all day. This recipe not only helps the beef cook to melty perfection, but allows all the flavours from the paprika, onion, capsicum and tomato to really develop over time. What do you eat goulash with? In some regions of Hungary, goulash is served with chunks of potato in the stew itself, while others serve it with 'csipetke' - small, pinched little pieces of pasta. Aussies sometimes serve it with crusty bread, mashed potato or pasta. We love to serve it with fettuccine because the sauce clings perfectly to the flat ribbons of pasta. Slow cooker beef goulash: key ingredients Chuck steak: We use a cheap cut of beef in this goulash, because it breaks down perfectly when cooked low and slow to result in a delectable, melt-in-your-mouth casserole. Tomato paste: Tomato paste brings a richness to your goulash Sweet paprika: This is responsible for the earthy warmth goulash has that's seldom found in any other stew. Together with the tomato paste, it also results in that stunning burgundy colour. Sour cream: Adding creaminess to your goulash on serving, not only does sour cream balance out the richness of the tomato, paprika and capsicum but it's also extremely satisfying to stir through yourself.
