Kindness demonstration to give students a visual representation of how kind acts create a ripple effect in the school community!
Thought I would share another activity I had with my Activity Days girls last week. We were on a mission, we went undercover and performed 7 days worth of SecRet SerViCe. Before we got started we talked a bit about service and the blessings that come when we help others. I found some manila envelopes at the dollar store and personalized them with their names on them. Inside I included a pen and these "forms" that they were to fill out during the activity. I also included a list of ideas for serving to help get them going. I was also lucky to find these fun "undercover" glasses to stick inside. Just to help them really get into the part...AND they would know if anyone sneaking up on them ;) (they really did kind of work!) The girls thought it was great. Honestly, I was pretty surprised with how excited they were to get going on their challenge. A lot of them told me they were going to go home and get started right away. Just goes to show that it doesn't take much (couple of bucks at the dollar store) to get kids excited about doing things for others. It turned out to be a fun, easy way to teach the important principal of SeRviNg oTheRS...

It was during a math lesson when 4 of my students instantly claimed they were stuck, and yet had only given a single hurried attempt at the activity without. even. reading. the. directions. I don’t know about you, but it makes me crazy. I wanted problem solving, independent, growth-minded students. Looking around, I knew my students weren’t at that place, but I knew they could be. When my four my math friends came over whining that they didn’t know what to do, I swiftly added the word “yet” to the end. “You don’t know what to do, YET.” They sort of smiled and looked at one another. As they sat down we talked about what they could do to figure it out on their own. I assured them that I would be here to help, but only if they truly needed it. Shortly after, they read the directions, shared ideas, and were able to solve the problem realizing they knew what to do all along. I wanted to help my students gain a healthy perseverance in the classroom and in life. One simple word helped me transform my room full of one try and I’m done mentalities into mistake making and try again mentalities. That word is YET. The power of yet is a wonderful and well known antidote in my room. It’s been around for a few years but just recently it made its way into my classroom and I hope it finds its way into yours! Since that day I’ve added the word, “yet” to any statement made by a student declaring that they couldn’t do something. It quickly caught on and now two weeks later I love hearing other students saying it to each other. Their stamina, determination, and growth mindsets have developed tenfold. We still have a lot of work to do but this has been an amazing start. Interested in helping your students use the power of yet? Here are some great ideas: *Watch the video, “You can learn anything” with your students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC82Il2cjqA *As a class brainstorm and record some negative messages you may think during the day, how can you change them by adding the word “yet” to the end? *Read aloud books that focus on overcoming challenges: The Energy Bus for Kids, Nadia: The Girl Who Couldn’t Sit Still, Emmanuel’s Dream, Giraffes can’t dance, Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Changed Music, Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin – You’ll also notice many of your already favorite read aloud already have challenges that the main characters work through and you can use those to model with too! *Encourage the students to add the word yet to end of their sentences and to remind their friends of the word yet! *Have a class discussion where you remind students that making mistakes is part of learning! How have you overcome obstacles in life? What’s a moment you’re proud of because you had to work for it? No matter what time of year, reminding your students how far small random acts of kindness can go is important! (There is an actual "Random Acts of Kindness Week" in February by the way!) Sometimes we can feel our students almost getting tired of being in the same room as each other, and an activity like this can remind them that being kind is always cool! Your students will become secret agents who are given a mission...of kindness! They will be given a letter with their mission, a brainstorming sheet, and a recording sheet. The students are encouraged to brainstorm targets and locations for their acts of kindness. This is to help them think outside of just school or home! Included in this pack: * Teacher Notes - Ideas for how to present the "mission" to the students *Mission Letter for your Students (blanks left for number of random acts of kindness and day/date due, just fill in and copy!) *3 Sizes of "Labels" for Mission Envelope *Brainstorming Sheet (2 versions - 6 rows and 12 rows) *Recording Sheet (2 versions - 6 rows and 12 rows) *"Mission Report" Writing Activity Information Sheet with rubric for self-evaluation for students (2 versions, each with a different rubric so you can choose what best fits your style!) *Grading Rubrics for the Mission Report Writing Activity (2 versions, one for each version of the rubrics) *Lined Paper for Mission Report Writing Activity/Reflection - One with simple doodle border - One with houndstooth border - One blank for bordered paper This is definitely a community building activity to help your students see the value in the little things we can do to brighten each other's days! Who is my School Counselor? To start this lesson, I play a game with my students that I have played many times before in the past with my own class during my teaching days. We play the game "Telephone" where all of us sit in a circle and I whisper a word to the first person and then that person whispers the same word to the person on their right and so on, until the word makes it around the circle. I usually start off with the word "Counselor". After everyone has had the word whispered to him/her, we count to three and shout it out. This is always a fun way to start the lesson and an easy way to introduce myself to the students as their school counselor. Props: These 4 items were part of my first lesson this year with my kiddos. A lot of the ideas were retrieved from Pinterest and other school counseling blogs while a few ideas I created on my own. Prop #1: The purple bouncy ball was used for an additional listening activity. I told the students to watch as I bounced the ball. I bounced it a certain amount of times and then asked the students how many times I bounced it. (Most kids didn't know the answer because they weren't concentrating on the number of times I bounced the ball.) The second time I bounced the ball, the kids counted silently and then had a second opportunity to count the number of bounces and most often, they got the answer correct because they were paying closer attention. To make this activity a little more challenging, I told the kids to close their eyes and listen to the number of bounces. The students really had to focus on their listening skills. We discussed the importance of being good listeners and how we can miss something important if we are not listening closely. Prop #2: The red telephone was given to the students to pass around the circle so that they could tell me their name. (My intentions were to find a play microphone for this, but I just grabbed the next best thing from our speech teacher at school.) Although I am familiar with most of the students, it's important for me to know them by name, and since we have over 1,000 students at our school, it can be a challenge to remember them all. This always give me a refresher course of names I may have forgotten. Prop #3: The book is a creation I made last year. I got the book idea from the Cool School Counselor's BlogSpot. This was a great prop for me to use last year when I was introducing myself, so I used it again this year! Prop #4: My fourth and final prop is my School Counseling Toolbox. I got ALL of these ideas from The Music City School Counselor's Webpage. Check out her page to find out what each item stands for and how they relate to the counseling profession. WORKSHEET: I created a worksheet much like the Music City School Counselor did on her blog. For my 2nd-4th graders, I added a word search to the back of the worksheet as something fun for them to do after the lesson and to help them remember what each item that I shared stood for and what I could do to help them throughout the year. I created the word search from this web page. To make the activity a little more fun, I gave a treat/prize to the first person who found all of the words in the word search.

In the "Secret Service Group," students become "Secret Agents" who are given specific missions to do Random Acts of Kindness throughout the school and in the community. Students will be immersed into the program, truly becoming "agents" with a membership card, TOP SECRET missions, and under-cover meetings. The Secret Service Group is designed for late elementary through middle school aged students. It's purpose is to promote kindness, empathy, and leadership skills in students. The documents provided can be used for a short-term group or easily modified into a year-long program for students. I have included an outline to give you an idea of how to use the information included. Most of the documents are Microsoft Word, meaning they are FULLY customizable. I just ask that if you change any of it, please give me credit for the original. Included in packet: Zipped file of 17 individual documents (documents contain multiple pages) Detailed group outline (how to get organized, sample lessons for group) Top Secret Group Notebook cover and documents Counselor Notebook documents for organizing this group Membership cards Pre-and Post Assessments Parent permission slips Pay-it-forward cards (option for school-wide program) secret service invitation certificate of completion group rewards for end (superlatives) ...and more! Note: The idea for a service group came from Dianne Senn's book Small Group Counseling for Children. However, all materials included in this packet are created by me to go above and beyond what she has in her book. I love teaching my students about the gift of giving! My boyfriend and I often volunteer and do different things in our community to “pay it forward.” There’s no better feeling in the world! I really wanted to incorporate more of these random acts of kindness activities with my students at school, so I came up with “The Kind Kids Club.” To be a part of the club, students must do random acts of kindness for others at home and at school. Your students can be a part of this AMAZING club too!!! All you have to do is: 1. Wrap up a box and make it look pretty! 2. Display this wanted poster in your classroom and read this letter from “The Kind Kids Club.” And, have them apply to be a part of the club with the application. 3, Place these Random Acts of Kindness ideas in the box and get busy being kind! Your students will love being a part of the club! Head on over to my blog to read more about how to make this work in your classroom and to grab the packet below for FREE.

First, let me just acknowledge that I have been silent for a LONG time. A lot has happened. I teach third grade now, specifically math, science and art. Completely out of my OLD comfort zone, but it is amazing how comfort zones grow. Ha! I have a larger family, and I am busier than ever before. But, I wanted to take a moment to share this little character education printable, because if there is one thing that hasn't changed in my teaching practice it is the understanding that the HEART comes first. You can't challenge a child's intellect without first tending to his or her emotional needs. A little kindness goes a long way. This year, I have been inspired by this awesome post I pinned several years back. If you don't have time to read it, I will summarize for you. The blog's author listened to her children speaking one day, and heard her son explaining to his sister that there IS magic in the world- it is in all the kind things people do. Talk about "out of the mouths of babes"! So beautiful! Inspired, this mom asked her children to make magic "kindness wands" and they left them in public places with a challenge for others to do 3 random acts of kindness. I love this idea! However, I don't think we have time in the schedule this year to make wands. But, I want my students to focus on kindness in February, and wanted to give them some ideas for random acts of kindness kids can do to make a difference! I made this little calendar for them. My students will be challenged to complete as many acts of kindness as they can before Valentine's Day. I will provide in-class time for students to discuss the kind acts they are performing, and how it makes them feel. On Valentine's Day, we will discuss kindness and I will be providing a sweet, heart-shaped treat in return for all the sweet things they have done for others! (Kindness has this habit of finding its way back to you...) You can go to my TPT store and download a copy of this printable for free. I'm so excited to see my students' excitement over what they can do for others! Kids love to make others happy. This kind of magic truly changes the world!
Kindness really matters! Mitchell School participated in the nation-wide program, The Great Kindness Challenge, which challenges us all to perform as many kind deeds as we can in one week. I have RAK printables to share today!!! Remember last week when I asked for a random act of kindness? And asked for someone to create RAK cards for me? Well...someone answered and answered in a BIG way. Let's take a minute to give a HUGE thank you to Jenn from The Former Miss for making these wonderful cards! Ready to see them? Jenn did an amazing job, didn't she?! Pin It So many great choices! You get to print them all then pick the one you want to use based on the recipient of your RAK. How cool is that?! Before I give you the link, let me hand out a few words of wisdom. 1) Print these beauties on heavy cardstock so they'll have the appearance of a business card. They'll last longer if they're sturdy and this will help serve as a reminder to the recipient to 'pass it on.' 2) After printing, cut out each individual card. This way they'll be ready to go whenever the spirit of kindness hits ya! 3) Keep a stash in your car or purse so they're handy at all times. 4) Print tons and send the link to everyone you know! Okay, so here's the link. Click here, save the document as a download, then print 'til your little heart's content. I'm planning on figuring out a way to add this printable to my sidebar so it's easily accessible whenever you need it. Gotta work on that one still... Patience, friends, patience! Now that you have awesome RAK cards, now all you need is a RAK challenge, right? RAK Challenge #24: Send a surprise to a complete stranger in the mail. Here's how this one works: Randomly open the phonebook (do you even own one still?) and pick a name, any name. Now address an envelope to that person. Inside the envelope place a RAK card and a few dollars. Make another little note that reads "Did you know that the word 'Stressed' backwards spells 'Desserts'?...Next time you're stressed, use this money to go treat yourself to a dessert!" So, don't forget to get you're RAK printables. Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you to my friend, Jenn. Stop by her blog and tell her how wonderful she is! By the way, she's needing a little push to start offering graphic design services. Don't you think she should go for it? I do! Now...go be kind, friends! This is exactly what we needed! •I have done this activity twice and the students really take to it all. They even commented that it was nice to have their ideas about others changed, when they did something nice for someone they don't usually speak/associate with. It changed the entire atmosphere in my class and everyone had a great end to the year. •This has been a fantastic addition to our classroom holiday spirit and moral •Love it ! Love it! Love it!!! •My class NEEDS this! :-) Great class builder! •This is such an awesome resource! My children loved spreading kindness around the classroom and the school community. Thank-you!! Will use it again for this school year for sure! Focus on building character the first week of school to set a tone that will last the whole year.
