Massage has always played an important part in Indian life. It features in the earliest Ayurvedic texts, which date back nearly 4000 years. These ancient texts describe that, when used in conjunction with herbs, spices and aromatic oils, massage had an important medical function and could not only “strengthen muscles and firm skin”, but also encourage the body’s innate healing energy. Today, Indian infants often receive a daily massage from birth until they are three years old to keep them supple and in good health. From three to six years of age, they are massaged once or twice a week. After six years of age, they are taught to share a massage with family members. Massage occurs across the generations in India as an integral part of family life. Indian Champissage™ springs from this rich tradition of family grooming. Head massage has been practised for over a thousand years. The concept was originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season (coconut, sesame, almond, olive oil, herbal oils, buttermilk, mustard oil and henna) and individual needs to keep their long hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful condition. Barbers practised many of the same skills with their male clients. They used to visit individual homes, cutting hair and often offering champi (head massage) as part of the treatment. It was customary for most people from the king down to have someone attend to them in this manner. Treatments offered by barbers differed from the massages performed by women. A champiwas an invigorating scalp massage designed to stimulate and refresh the individual and was not considered part of a beauty regime. The word ‘shampoo’ comes from the Hindi word 'champi,’ meaning ‘massage of the head.’ Regular head massage, as practised by woman to beautify their hair, was soothing and relaxing. They would use natural oils to keep their long hair strong and healthy. The barbers’ skills evolved through the ages. They were handed down from father to son in much the same way that women kept alive the tradition of hair massage and grooming by passing the techniques from mother to daughter. Nowadays, it is very common to go to a barber’s shop, receive a wet shave and have a head massage thrown in as part of the treatment. Head massage can be seen in many locations in India from Calcutta to Bombay: on street corners, in markets and, of course, on the beach.

Blind from the age of 1, Narendra Mehta was a truly gifted human being. Due to his blindness, Narendra’s heightened awareness and sensitivity led him on a voyage of discovery of the power of human touch, culminating in his development and teaching of a new massage modality known as Indian Champissage™, or more commonly know as Indian Head Massage. Indian Champissage has the power to affect the whole body as an ‘energy system’, and help each person tune back into a deeper, more nourishing sense of themselves. Born in India, Narendra benefitted from a culture that valued massage as an inherent part of family life, and he soon developed an appreciation for the art of massage, which had many noticeable benefits for the body and mind. However, it was not until he travelled to the UK many years later, in the mid 70s, and sampled Western massage that he truly understood the holistic nature of the massage that was being given in India, and the critical need for this in the West, particularly given the fast, relentless pace of life. Back then even a full body massage in the UK would not typically include massage of the head. This was, in fact, disturbing to Narendra as the head is the seat of our mental activity – and if left unchecked, often becomes a source of tension and stress that affects the entire body, depressing the immune system and opening us up to illness and diseases. As the head is the physical seat of the Crown Chakra, the Master Chakra that governs all other chakras, releasing tension and tuning our awareness back into this part of our body can have a powerful positive effect on our entire energetic system. On the face of it, Indian Champissage can appear to be just a massage of the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face, but it is so much more. Given by an experienced practitioner, who is aware of the subtle energy body, this can be a powerful experience for the client receiving the massage. In a fast-paced society where our constant grasping for more often takes us away from ourselves, this simple system helps us reconnect with the internal workings of the body, relaxing the mind and setting the spirit free. Often clients will be surprised at how deeply relaxed they are after an Indian Head massage treatment, not only physically, but emotionally freer, and mentally clearer too. It is not uncommon for clients to experience emotional release through tears or laughter, or to experience powerful visual images of colour and light as Indian Head Massage helps us reconnect to ourselves at an energetic level. After receiving an Indian Head Massage, many of my clients report feelings of emotional relief, a deep sense of space, an unusual happiness or even a feeling of walking on air. "I was quite sceptical at first but was amazed at the feelings I experienced during my first session; relaxation, which I definitely needed that day after a very difficult day at work, warmth, emotional relief, and an overall sense of calm but to name a few." (TB, IHM Client) Massage that incorporates an understanding of the body as an interconnected, dynamic field of energy, has an important role to play in our lives, one that brings us much more than simply relief from muscular stiffness and tension, although that in itself is something to be cherished. Often ‘unwinding’ the body ‘unwinds’ the mind. Through the art of touch, Indian Head massage helps reconnect the client to his/her inner self, giving him/her the space to breathe and birthing a new awareness of the body-mind. When teaching Indian Head Massage, students are surprised at just how effective a treatment they can give, even when they are relatively inexperienced: Indian Head Massage is a very simple and immensely enjoyable modality to learn. It is so accessible that even after just a weekend course, a complete beginner to massage can already, with the right intention and their newfound awareness, give a transformative treatment to friends and family. "I really enjoyed the weekend and learnt so much! much more than I had even expected, and left feeling wonderful. In the few days after the course I noticed some 'detoxing' stuff which helped me to identify and release things, particularly stress! I'd also been having problems sleeping and since the course this has massively improved. The techniques learnt were really valuable and I continue using them daily. I'm also so inspired I'm intending to take the IHM qualification and hopefully become a practitioner in the future. Thanks Jennifer!"
