Let’s be frank: New York’s nightlife scene on the eve of 2016 isn’t exactly the heady demimonde it once was. It leaves a lot to be desired, even at times of peak revelry à la New Year’s—but maybe the solution isn’t necessarily newness. Where better to find inspiration than the master class in hedonism that was the late ‘70s and early ‘80s heyday of Manhattan’s club scene? Pick your poison: Whether it’s Studio 54, Area, the Peppermint Lounge, the Mudd Club, or the Palladium, here are 30 throwbacks to help you throw down in style come the 31st.

Bill Bernstein’s photographs of 70s clubland, many of which have never been seen before, illustrate disco’s glamour and decadence
On April 16, 1977, crowds of hip revelers cheered as nightclub Studio 54 first opened its doors at a building on 54th Street in New York City. These images capture the world's most famous nightclub Studio 54 during its 33-month existence, populated by celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart and Andy Warhol. The wild success of the '70s New York club has forever been put down to owner Steve Rubell's first rule of partying: 'The key to a good party is filling a room with guests more interesting than you.' By 1978, within a year of transforming it from a theatre to a nightclub, Studio 54 had made $7million and Rubell was quoted as saying 'only the Mafia made more money.' The space would later be adapted into a theater, but Studio 54's party scene in the 1970s and early 1980s will forever be remembered for its wild nights, high-profile guests, and massive crowds. Here's a collection of 100 amazing photos that will take you back nearly 40 years into the club. (via Flashbak)
