One of my most favorite days of the year! After two decades of teaching middle school students, trust me, I understand the craziness that can take place the day before break. My go-to strategy over the past few years has been to hold a “Day Before Winter Break Connect Four Tournament.” My classes usually comprise of 30 students each hour (49 minutes) and I assign students to a spot on the bracket. I let them know that all of the rounds up to the Final Four will be whoever wins the best 2 out of 3 games moves on to the next round. The Final Four and the Championship Rounds are just one game – winner advances due to the amount of time we have left in class. Students who are eliminated can play for fun against others in class or they can watch other matches. I don’t allow observers of a game to offer help in anyway to the competitors in the game they are watching. This has proven to work for me year after year, and my favorite things are that students are talking, they’re playing, they’re having fun, and I don’t have any classroom management issues on this day because of the structure. I’ll usually have candy canes available for the Top 4 from each class as a little reward. Kids love it!! Enjoy! See ALL of my Word Walls! I can't thank everyone enough for the kind words the past few weeks. I was honestly thinking of completely stopping the bloggy world, but I just can't. I can't give up the sharing, the learning, everything. No matter what negative people may be out there. I'll be back tomorrow or Sunday with more of an update, but I wanted to get these pictures posted, because I had some people asking. I need to take some better pictures, but these will have to do for now! The room wasn't totally finished at this point, but a lot of stuff was dunzo. Again, THANK YOU, for all being so amazing, wonderful, positive... The resource is structured to have students prepare for the community outing and then reflect on the events afterward. This is a lab safety agreement (contract) to be signed by students before they are given permission to participate in lab activities. As a science (or CTE) teacher, you should take all reasonable precautions to protect yourself from legal liability for accidents or injuries incurred as a part of the typical activities in secondary school laboratory classes or in summer school or after school programs. By using an agreement such as this one, you also reduce student behavior problems and have documentation that the student agreed to the rules, and knew the consequences of misbehavior before beginning to participate in the activities of your class.
