Below is my teacher desk AND my small group table! Although I try not to be sitting here unless I'm teaching in small group, I wanted everything to be all in one place! Do you need parts of speech posters for your classroom? This post has several classroom décor resources to help teachers prepare an engaging learning environment.
What kind of posters do you have on your classroom walls? How do you use them? We all try to prepare the best learning environment for our students. We want to decorate our rooms to spark their learning interest, but not make it too overwhelming or cluttered. We do not want unnecessary decorations on the wall that could possibly distract our students' learning. Nonetheless, we want to put up some engaging posters on the walls that will encourage their desire to learn. Here are some that you could start with! Synonym Posters I created these synonym posters to expand my kids’ vocabulary and to spice up their writing. You can display them on the wall for your kids to look at as a reference, and they will surely brighten up your classroom too! I have a color and a black and white version. I have updated the file with a cover page for you to bind them into a book. Here are some of the classroom pictures that other teachers have kindly shared with me. I also have this set in Spanish! Prefix and Suffix Posters Understanding prefixes and suffixes is vital in increasing kids' vocabulary. These colorful posters can be used as a reference to help your students determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix or suffix is added to a root word. You can display them on the wall for your kids to look at as a reference or bind the pages into a book. You can even reduce the size of the posters and make them into an interactive notebook like the example below. Parts of Speech Posters These colorful parts of speech posters will surely brighten up your classroom. There are 8 posters included: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, interjections, and pronouns. Each poster comes with 6 word cards that can be displayed together. Genre Posters These colorful genre posters will be a great reference for your students to identify and understand different genres in literature. You can display them in your classroom library and your students will be able to refer back to them throughout the year. A black and white version is included for those of you who’d like to save ink. A title page is also included for those who’d like to bind the pages into a book. Sight Word Cards This colorful set of sight words are great to use as flashcards or to display on a word wall. I used a different color background to represent each level: 1. Pre-primer (sky blue) 2. Primer (light green) 3. First (pink) 4. Second (purple) 5. Third (green) 6. Nouns (orange) Phonics Posters You will find 105 different phonics posters in this packet. It includes cvc, cvce, cvcc, blends, digraphs, vowel teams, r-controlled, silent letters, trigraphs, and other sounds. These will be a great reference for your students. You can introduce different sounds throughout the year and display them on your classroom wall or bulletin board. Transition Words Are your students having difficulty connecting one idea to the next smoothly in their writing? Transition phrases and words help the reader progress from one important idea to the next and show the relationship between the main idea and the details. These eye-catching posters can be displayed on your classroom wall to help your students improve their writing. You can click any of the pictures to download these posters! :) I hope everyone had a wonderful vacation and is recharged for another amazing year! If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Chloe
Another school year is barreling upon us again! My how the summers fly. But at least I get another chance to do what I love - decorating my classroom! And this year, I was able to stray a bit from my longtime Spanish-class decor to a slightly broader cultural theme - a global boho classroom decor. I was tempted to put up another hat wall which is a nod mostly to the Hispanic culture. Then, I decided it is time for a boho classroom theme that incorporates a variety of cultures - which is how I decorate my home. As
Do you use Word Walls in your ESL classroom? Having a Word Wall is an easy way to display common vocabulary words that your students need to master. Word Walls serve as a reference when writing or speaking in the classroom. By including a picture with the word, the cards provide even more support in expanding a student's vocabulary. Word Walls should be displayed where all the students can see the cards. Additionally, the teacher should frequently reference the cards and model when and how to use them. In addition to simply displaying the words in a classroom, there are a number of fun activities you can do to practice the vocabulary. 1. Head's up: Have one student hold a card on his/her forehead while a partner describes the action until he/she guesses the word. 2. Matching Game: Match the word with the picture. This is a great center or early finisher activity. 3. Pictionary: One student will draw a picture of the word while the others try to guess it. 4. Fly Swatter Game: Have 2 students stand to the sides of your word wall each armed with a fly swatter. The teacher (or student) gives a definition of the word. The first student to "swat" the correct word wall card wins. I have include these free word wall cards for your ESL classroom. They include common classroom vocabulary that is essential those first weeks of school. (The cards come in black and white as well as color.) There is also a sheet included to see what your students already know. See below. To download your free Classroom Vocabulary Word Wall Cards, click here! Thanks for looking! Enjoy!

You might ask why I didn't jump on the band wagon when I first heard about these fabulous resources and the simple answer is...I'm stubborn. I didn't think they could help out my middle school classroom. Man, WAS I WRONG! A few of my favorite things about anchor charts: -Easy to make (just find one online for your inspiration) -Mr. Sketch markers (I love the smell as I make anchor charts) -Students refer to them daily! -When a student asks me a question about something we have already learned, I can easily point to the anchor charts and the student can answer their own question. -With more observations happening in my district, the observers always stop at my board where I store my charts and just stare. (I THINK this is a good thing) -The colors. My students always try and guess which colors the anchor chart will be. So funny! -Visual! So much easier for the visual learners. (I think everyone has the visual learner inside of them) And now...a few anchor charts from our classroom. I seriously need to invest in a camera for my room :) For info on where I received ideas on some of these info charts. Check out my Anchor Charts link on the left side of this blog.

My favorite part about getting ready for back to school is getting all of the bulletin boards set up around my classroom. Here are some of my favorite ideas.
We are continuing on Classroom Ideas...This idea is awesome! How clever and cool! Tweet with Twitter!!!! Mrs. White's 5th Grade Class...
Not too long ago, I publicly vowed to never join a linky party just to be at the party. Well, Joanne's Spark Student Motivation Saturday linky is a perfect place for me to brag a little about how great my students are doing with their Interactive Reading Notebooks. Before we go any further, a little background information about my 6th grade class is necessary. My main group is considered an intervention class - the whole class, all thirty of them. All are really struggling in Language Arts, and all (but a few) are really struggling with Math. A little over half of them are in Read 180, and the rest are starting out in System 44. I get to have them for four periods in a row, and we do everything, except Science. I love it, and I wouldn't have it any other way. For me, this is where the magic happens. This year we are going all out with our Reading Notebooks. In the past, they have done great things, but they have all been done individually. I have assigned traditional reading logs, and then struggled to figure out why I was getting so few turned in. This year we went with composition notebooks. There is something about comp notebooks that make you feel like a college student; I remember feeling so grown up when I had one. Last Sunday, I shared what their homework looked like, but in case you missed it..... "We" or I read in class. They are expected to re-read and answer one question. I prep them in class by asking questions and allowing them to Think-Pair-Share before they go home. They are expected to write about 1/2 a page. This week they were expected to find evidence from the story to support their answer - very focused questions. I challenged them to use quotations from the story, and daily modeled how to do it. Do you see them? Quotation marks!!!! This is from one of my System 44 kids, awesome right? This was not easy for him, and you can almost pick up the "focus vibes" from the page. So why would 29 (one was absent) struggling 6th graders triumphantly turn in their Interactive Reading Notebooks for a grade, the second week in a row? 1. I demanded that they do it. I took no excuses and no prisoners. 2. I told them about how impressed the other teachers were at Language Arts meeting, and that the "other kids" (or non Read 180 kids) weren't doing anything close to what they were doing. 3. I pulled sticks everyday. If their name was pulled, they shared their Notebook under the camera. We all got to help them revise and fix what needed to be done. That act of bravery won their table 10points! 4. Most importantly, I told them that on Friday I was pulling 5 name sticks and those Notebooks were going to be read and graded by our assistant principal. She was going to talk to each of them about their Notebook. If they didn't have their Notebook complete, then they were going to have to explain that to her. Now, many of my students have been to the office in elementary school on more than one occasion - it comes with the "intervention" territory. Rarely do I actually send them, it is usually a problem at lunch or PE. One has already spent some time up in the office, and more than a couple will visit her again. For me, it is really important that she knows them, and that they know her, before any disciplinary problems arise. How did the kids feel about it? Well, by Wednesday I had at least twelve volunteers. They wanted to go see her and share their Notebook. On Friday, as my basket was filling up, about six more asked if their notebook could get turned in to her. As I was leaving school, I dropped them off in her office and she squealed with delight. It was a win-win situation...well, I still have 24 Notebooks to grade. Next week, I think the 8th grade AVID teacher is going to get them, or maybe our School Resource Officer, or maybe our WEB advisor, or maybe their PE teachers, or maybe all of them and then I have no Notebooks to grade over the weekend.....mmmmm.
