Hi friends, I recently made a sweet and simple checkerboard baby quilt for a quick baby shower present. This is not only a great intro to quilting project - it's also very on trend with the checkerboard pattern. Several of you asked about how I made this and I took a few notes to share today in a mini tutorial, along with finished images of the quilt before and after washing. I always like to wash quilts before I gift them - especially if it's a baby quilt. That way they can instantly use it for some tummy time or for decorating a nursery. Who doesn't like to make the same quilt twice? As I've said before..... Most of us.... But this is my third fourth time making the Fox & Friends equilateral triangle quilt. This quilt will also be a sample quilt brought to class when I teach at the Kincardine Sunset Quilters' Guild on November 10th. It was so much fun making this quilt yet again. And it was a much, much quicker process. I cut the quilt out one evening, pieced and did the applique the next day, and quilted it up on the third day. Experience can work in my favour if not too much time has passed. Here are all four of the Fox & Friends, finishes 1 to 4, shown left to right, top to bottom. You can see the first Fox & Friends here, the second finish here, and the third finish here. Although the pattern has a diagram that can be traced for the applique eyes, I used a couple of thread spools and this time the black portions turned out to be so much larger than previously. Oooops. The front was made entirely from Kona Cotton Solids. Again. But this time I finally did make the green version I had spoke of previously. I chose greens that leaned more toward being army green as opposed to candy green. From lightest to darkest: Cactus, Sprout, Peridot, Lime and Grass. The raccoons were made from Medium Grey, Black and Silver. And the foxes were made from Orange and Silver. Honestly, I do prefer the blue background over the green. But the backing choice really is a compliment to the top. Those little green leaves throughout, tie in well. From the Forest Friends collection designed by Ingrid Slyder for Moda - Forest Friends Toss in Pebble. And for the binding - Forest Friends Birch Trees also in Pebble. I quilted along all of the seam lines using a light grey Superior Threads' So Fine! #30 on top and in the bobbin. I thought it would take so much longer to perform this straight line quilting compared to those organic wavy lines. But no. And I am so pleased with the results! I especially love how the quilting shows on the back. And all the little stars formed at the crossroads! "Fox & Friends" finished at approximately 39" x 45" and was the 58th use of my 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. If you would like to make a Fox & Friends quilt, too... Good Morning! It's time once again for a Project Challenge. This months theme is Burlap or Ticking. I decided to work with ticking and make myself a quilt that has been on my wish list for years. Have a look. . . I absolutely love the way it turned out. I had trouble with one row, it turned out so wonky no matter what I did it just would not match up with the other rows. But I couldn't be bothered to redo the row completely. Now I'm glad I didn't since it is rather hard to find even when your looking for it. Can you spot it? I am also very happy I decided on using both blue and red stars, at first I was going to use all red stars but the think the combo of both makes it very interesting. I won't go into a full tutorial on how I made the block because I followed a fabulous video tutorial by The Quilt Codex. I don't usually name my baby quilts. If I named this one though it would be Make Life a Charm... This was the quickest baby quilt I have ever made. Started last week it is now done.... I put the last stitches in the binding this afternoon while watching "Coraline" a crazy "Alice" type movie. It's animated, but not necessarily for the younger set. Then I washed it and while it was in the dryer I took a nap. I didn't sleep well last night.. Link party with prizes WARNINGS, disclaimers and general comments: Let me list all the possible problems/issues that you may have with my patterns... I want to motivate my choice so you understand where I stand :) but I am always open to change my mind and my patterns to help people that are not comfortable with the way I do things ;) 1. ALL the patterns are UNTESTED... I will test them all eventually, because I want those quilts for myself :) but I cannot guarantee there won't be mistake or changes along the way... if you are uncomfortable with that, just wait for the official release of the block; 2. I have no schedule for when the blocks will be pieced/corrected/released... it's going to be an on-going project that will go on until it's done ;) 3. also the embroidery blocks/text are untested. Which means that I may need to change the font of the quotes if I don't like how they look when I stitch them... you may try one and see if it works for you. If not, just let me know, I can change them quite easily 4. most of the blocks are composed of many pieces and small pieces... that's just because I care more about the final detailed design than the amount of work/time that it takes to put it together :) many small pieces does NOT mean that they are difficult! quite the opposite for me... many pieces are composed of a couple of seams... they are just many because of the way they have to get together... and if I (a less than one-year old sewing person, that before that didn't even know what a quilt is) tell you that you can do it, you can trust me :) 5. many pieces for each block means that it may take some time to put each block together... but that's not a problem for me... because quilting is not a speed sport, at least not for me ;) I am not a big fan of assembly line, chain piecing, and similar things... I know they help to get quilt done fast... but I prefer to do it little by little and take my time for each block... this means that I may not be able to meet "Christmas deadlines" but that's ok for me ;) 6. don't ask me about fabric requirements... I have no idea :) I can just tell you that most of the blocks are 10'' finished square blocks (except few that have different measures, and are written in each pattern) or 12'' high rectangles. In Alice's quilt, each block has a 3'' finished border (where I embroider the quote) which you may not want. Topolino's quilt has sashing around the blocks that allow them to align and form rows. I have no measures for those, I will add borders as it fits along the way :). So I can just tell you that the rough size of the finished quilts will be 60''x85'' (with all the borders I want to put), but any specific fabric calculation is up to you. I never do those calculations: I work with what I have in my stash and when I need a specific color I go shopping for that :) Go back to the top Alice in Wonderland Inspiration and history of the designs I always like anything that has to do with Alice in Wonderland. So I wanted to include many different things in the quilt to reflect that. So I included references to: 1. the original book from Lewis Carroll (all quotes + blocks 7 and 8 inspired from the original illustrations by John Tenniel) 2. the 1951 Disney movie (most of the blocks) 3.Tim Burton's movie (blocks 1 and 9) 4. Gwen Stefani's Alice inspired video (block 6) 5. the gothic videogame American McGee's Alice (viewing discretion is advised, extra bonus block) Go back to the top Construction Each block is a 10'' square (finished, 10.5'' unfinished) surrounded by a 3'' (finished, 3.5'' unfinished) sashing. The sashing contains quotes from the book. The quotes goes around one single square starting from the open end of the clover. Few blocks have quotes that span across multiple squares... just follow the sentence as it turn around the different angles :) Go back to the top Technical information about the patterns Since it's a Test-A-Long, I just saved the PDF straight out of Quilt Assistant with any further editing. I generated two versions: with and without color indicators. I usually like to work with color indicators in order not to get confused, but on small pieces those colored squares can cover the actual pieces! So if you prefer to work with the plain one, you have the file do be able to do that. Since I didn't do any editing in the files, I didn't add embroidery details either. I included in the pattern the image that the block is supposed to reproduce, so you can add the embroidery details using that as reference. The words in the quotes are arranged so that they can fit on a page or two. To transfer them on the fabric, refer to the picture showing how the different words are aligned around the block. Even if Topolino means "Mickey Mouse" the comic book contains stories both from Mickey Mouse's friends (Minnie, Goofy, Pluto) and all Duck Tales characters (Donald Duck, Daisy, Scrooge and all the others). Since this is a quilt connected to my childhood, I have to call all the characters with the names I know them for (i.e. the italian one) :) however I also put the english name for reference :) The idea of the full quilt is to try to reproduce set of blocks that form a comic strip. This is why I choose blocks in which each character is doing something. This makes the blocks more complex than simple "portraits" block, but complex does not mean difficult ;) complex just means that they are composed of many pieces, so they may require some time to be put together, but I think that that's worthy. It is not longer in print, but this quilt can easily be recreated using similar light shades of cream for the flower petals. Slight variation or contrast in the petal colors create a nice blending. If there is too much contrast, the petals loose their soft shading.
