Learn how to make a cozy pillow bed with this quick and easy tutorial - a great beginner sewing project. Perfect for reading, lounging, sleepovers and camping!
Ta-da! Here it is, the monsters. She asked for dark blue, light blue, red, orange, yellow, a hint of lime green, and some black and white. I got her crib dimensions, asked a few questions, and here's what she's getting. I hope it's what she had hoped for. (I am so anxious about it actually. It's kinda intimidating making something for someone you don't know.) I put four monsters on the blanket, on the light blue fabric. I didn't blanket stitch around the light blue as they are the "windows." I used two orange fabrics (one pattern, one solid) and three dark blues (two patterns, one solid). The patterns are all a bit geometric. (and the orange monster does have pupils, they are light blue; they didn't photograph very well.) I did another pieced back, using fabrics from the front. I like how the grid of quilting shows so well, and the different colors of thread from the contrasting blanket stitch. I kept the monsters pretty classic, I'm not reinventing the wheel here. And really, you can never go wrong with a cyclops. Onto the bumper. I have a sister-in-law who is especially crafty. Not to say the others aren't, but she really is as crafty as my sister thinks I am. Anyway, she made a bumper for her first a couple years ago and it was pretty much a never again experience. I was a little intimidated, but I told myself that I sew more than she does and I would be okay. I hoped. Well I essentially was, but I'm not eager to repeat this anytime soon. It's just so long and skinny; it's not that easy to get in a hoop. I think the real thing that got to me was the blanket stitching. I'm pretty much resolved not to blanket stitch anything for years. Also, if anyone hears me say the words "invisible thread," just go take it from my sewing room. But, I do love how the bumper turned out. I totally wish I had made my kids a bumper. So bottom line, it was a tricky quilting process, but not horrendous, I'd make one for my sister. I had originally planned the colored squares on front and back, but then the black and white started calling me. I didn't want to inject that much black and white into someone's nursery without checking, so I asked Mom-to-be and she said black and white. It looks fantastic! I totally love the mental image of the classic b&w peeking through the bars and the monster colorfest inside the crib. I used colored fabric for the corner ties and black and white for the center ties of the long sides. I didn't want to draw the eye to the center ties. The bumper is blanket stitched just like the blanket and has monsters on the light blue. Each crib side has its own cute little monster. It was delivered yesterday and is officially finished. Now I can start restocking my poor little etsy shop. linking up to quilt story, crazy mom quilts, and tgiff

I got all the measurements from THIS website. You can get your bumper tie measurements and crib skirt measurements from there as well. She did give incorrect measurements for how much foam to buy and just gives pictures of how to do the bumper ties and crib skirt. I recommend making the ties and bed skirt from the pictures she made, they are pretty self explanatory. She does not explain how to put the whole bumper together. So here is me giving it my best shot. I tried explaining things the best I could without physically being with you. Good Luck! The pieces shown were cut out with the fabric doubled. So I am not crazy you should end up with 8 pieces. #1. I am a HUGE fan of serger's so if you have one I recommend serging all the edges of your cut out fabric pieces. #2. Next you will be attaching 4 pieces of fabric together, two of your 27 1/2" x 13 3/4" ( short pieces ) and 2 of your 55"x 13 3/4 " ( long pieces). Take one of your short pieces of fabric and attach its 13 3/4 inch side to one of your long piece of fabric's 13 3/4 inch side with patterned sides pinned together. You will attach the pieces so that they are long, short, long, short as one continuous piece. Sew the width of your sewing foot or 1/2 inch into your fabric. When you're done sewing your first 4 pieces together put to the side and repeat with the remainder 4 pieces of fabric. #3. Take your now two giant pieces of fabric and iron flat all the seams you just made. When you're done they should now be 2 continuous pieces of fabric like this. Set one of them aside. #4. Now take 1 ( you will NOT be doing this to the other long piece of fabric ) of the long strips of fabric you sewed together and lay it out with patterned side facing up. With the patterned side up pin your piping, with the bulgy part facing down , along the top edge of your fabric. If you are using a patterned fabric that has a right and wrong direction, be sure your pattern is the correct direction and you are pinning along the top edge of the pattern. Pin piping all the way to the end of your fabric. #5. You should have 7 ties for the top of your bumper and 7 for the bottom of your bumper. Making a total of 14 ties. You will fold your tie's in a V shape before pinning to the edges of your fabric. They should look like the picture above when done pinning. When pinning, there should be one tie on both the top and bottom about every 27 inches starting with the first edge and continuing to the last edge. So 2 on each of the ends, 2 at each of the seams and 2 extra ones in the middle of each of the long seams. #6. Once everything is pinned, with a zipper foot sew as close up to the bulged edge of piping as possible all the way down your fabric. This will also secure your top bumper ties. Then individually sew bottom ties. This is what the top with piping and bumper ties should look like when you're done. Your bottom ones should be directly underneath your top ones only sewn with no piping. This is where you add the zipper. It is kind of confusing, but bare with me! If you choose not to do a zipper just skip to step #13 and make sure to leave one end of your fabric open so you can put your foam in. You can also look at the picture at step #13 before doing the zipper to hopefully help you understand better. #7. Take your 2 pieces of fabric (one with bumper ties and piping sewn to it and the other one we set aside at step #3) and with patterned sides together (making sure your pattern is the correct direction) match up 2 of your short sides( two 13 3/4 inch sides) and sew the width of your sewing foot up 1 inch from the edge of your fabric. It should look like you are adding to the continuous strip of fabric to make one giant strip. * Note: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MATCHED YOUR SEAMS FROM BOTH PIECES OF FABRIC BEFORE DOING THIS STEP. #8. Then fold back about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of the fabric and iron back #9. Pin your zipper upside down on ironed seams. #10. Flip fabric over when you're done pinning and it should look like this. Make sure the teeth on your zipper are not underneath any fabric. And everything is securely pinned. #11 Put a pin at the end of the zipper where the sewn fabric starts. This way you know where to turn your fabric and sew back up the zipper. #12. With a zipper foot sew as close to the edge of your fabric as you can. Starting at the top of one side of your zipper, turning at the bottom to continue up the other side. When you are done sewing around your zipper flip everything over and this is what it should look like. This also shows the inside bottom of the zipper. Now all your fabric should be one super long piece that is connected by your zipper. If you do not understand, I recommend hand sewing the open end instead of putting your zipper in once your foam is in your finished bumper. #13. After you have folded back your fabric at the zipper so patterned sides are together, make sure ALL seams match up and pin all of your fabric together. Also make sure all your bumper ties are inside with the patterned side of your fabric. *If you chose not to do a zipper, just lay fabric patterned sides together and match up all of your seams before pinning. #14. On the top of one side of your fabric you should see the sewing line from adding your piping. So with a zipper foot sew on top of that line or as close as you can to it. * Do not go over the line otherwise you will not see your piping when you flip everything right side out. Then sew shut the rest of your open sides about a half inch in, unzip your zipper and flip right side out! If you did not add a zipper sew both long sides and one short side. With one end open flip everything right side out. #15. Stuff your bumper with your foam, then zip closed or hand sew bumpers shut. I used 2 inch foam from Joann's and had them cut 2 long pieces that measure 50 1/2" x 12", and 2 short pieces that measure 23" x 12". I recommend buying the foam when you can get your hands on a 50% off coupon because otherwise it is $30 a yard. FINISHED PRODUCT!

I could have sworn that I saw somewhere a wonderful free pattern for sewing crib bedding... but of course now that I want it I can't find i...
the first part of the nursery bedding is done: the bumper pads! below you will find a quick tutorial on how i made them and some pictures. i'll be honest, i cheated and bought pre-cut batting specifically sized for the crib bumper. i am so glad i did. i even got the batting on sale for 50% off, so i only spent about $13 for all of the batting. instructions come with the batting, but i did not follow them since i wanted to tweak the pattern a bit. 1. i cut 2 pieces of my main fabric 27" x 11 3/4" and 2 pieces 53" x 11 3/4" for the bumpers. 2. i cut 20 pieces of coordinating fabric 2" x 20" for the ties. cut to be "tied" 3. i cut 2 pieces of coordinating fabric 2" x 54" and 2 pieces 2" x 28" for the piping. i only added piping to the top edge since it probably wouldn't show on the other edges anyway. piping cord and fabric 4. i did the piping first, by wrapping the piping with the fabric and sewing right next to the cord with a zipper foot. further instructions for piping here. 5. i did the ties next, by pressing 1/4" to the wrong side on all edges. then i folded in half and edge stitched all the way around. all of the ties completed! 6. i pinned the piping to the right side top edge of my main fabric, with edges together. i sewed it to the main piece using 3/8" seams. 7. i folded the ties in half lengthwise and pinned them to the corners (above the seam allowances on the bottom and within seam allowances on the sides) on the right side of each main piece. on the longer pad pieces, i also sewed a tie to the top and bottom at the 26 1/2" mark (middle.) i pinned all of the ties so they would not get caught in the stitching. 8. i then pinned the main pieces, right sides together. i stitched the tops first where the piping was, and used the stitches already in place as my guide, using a zipper foot. i continued to stitch all the way around, leaving a 8-10" hole in the bottom edge to slide the batting in place. 9. i trimmed each corner and leftover piping away. 10. i turned the covers to the right sides out and slid the batting into the covers. i then pressed the seam allowances down in the open edges and stitched the edges closed. congrats, you are done with your bumper pads! when kate saw them, she exclaimed, "ooooh! my brother will love them! they're sooo cute!" and then she kissed one of the pads. ha!

Taking on this project was pretty big for me. I knew I would need nursery bedding but I didnt want to spend a ton of money and I also wanted to make the nusery modern and look well with the rest of the house. Its a pretty long process, but the end result is so great. Its also fun to say that you made all the nursery bedding for your baby to other people. Pretty impressive ;) • • • • • What you will need Any Sewing Machine Foam Baby Bumper Pads - package of six measuring 10" x 26" x 1" Fabric for inside of six crib bumpers: 2 yards of 45” wide fabric: I used the blue chevon shown below Fabric for outside of six crib bumpers: 2 yards of 45" wide fabric: I used the green shown below Fabric for piping around bumpers: 1½ yards of 45” wide fabric: we used the orange shown below ribbon to match your orange piping 6 yards 3/8" diameter cotton cording All-purpose thread in colors to match fabrics Iron and Ironing board See through ruler Fabric marking pen or chalk pencil Scissors or rotary cutter and mat Straight pins Iron and ironing board Corner template (see download below) 5" square piece of cardboard or template plastic for template (check your local craft store for stencil material) • • • • • Getting Started • • • • • Cut your fabric and trims Download the corner curve template and trace it onto a piece of cardboard or template plastic. Cut out. http://www.sew4home.com/sites/sewmk.mervideo.com/files/images/articles/patterns/0256-corner_pattern.pdf Cut six 27" x 11¾" pieces of fabric from both the blue chevron and the green (six pieces from each fabric). (Note: To make this amount of fabric sufficient, cut 11¾" pieces along the 45" edge of the fabric.) Using the template you made, mark a rounded edge on each corner of each 27" x 11¾" piece of fabric. Cut the rounded corners. Using the original template pattern (the paper), transfer the markings (the dots) onto your fabric using the fabric marking pen. I like to make a tiny hole with a pin right in the middle of the dot, then I line up my pattern on my fabric and make a mark with my pen through that hole. 3. For the ties, cut twenty-four 16" pieces from orange ribbon 4. Cut six 30" lengths from cording. 5. Cut six 2¼" wide bias strips according to the instructions below. Each will need to be about 30" long. Cut your bias strips On your cutting surface, lay your fabric out flat, right side up, with the selvage running along one side. The selvage is the woven edge of your fabric where it was originally attached to the loom. The fabric's pattern does not continue onto the selvage, but there is likely to be some information printed there that identifies the manufacturer or designer. Fold the fabric back diagonally so a straight edge is parallel to the selvage. Press the fold and use this crease as a guide to mark your parallel lines. Use a straight edge to make continuous parallel likes 2¼" apart. Cut along these lines with good, sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and straight edge. • • • • • At Your Sewing Machine & Ironing Board • • • • • Join bias strips You may need to join two strips to make one that is the necessary 30" long. To do this, take two of your strips and place them right sides together at right angels to each other. Stitch straight across. Lay flat, press the seam open and trim off the overlapping edges. Repeat until you have one long fabric strip. Insert the cord Place one 30" bias strip right side down on a large flat surface. Lay a 30" length of cord in the center. Fold the fabric over the cord, keeping the cord centered and matching the raw edges of the fabric. Pin to hold in place. Carefully move to your sewing machine and adjust the piping so the raw edges line up on your seam allowance marking and cord pokes out to the left of your foot. Using the Zipper Foot, stitch slowly staying close to the cord and keeping your seam allowance consistent. Remember to remove your pins as you go so you don't sew over them. Stitch cording to bumper fabric Pin cording to the right side of a 27" x 11¾" piece green fabric. Using the dots you made with the template, start pinning the cording at the large dot in the center of left curved edge, stretching along the 27" straight side, and ending in the center of the curved edge at the large dot on the right side. Be sure to match the raw edges of the piping insertion fabric and the base fabric. Your cording should be centered between the dots. Stitch in place using the zipper foot. You are stitching around a curve so you'll need to gently ease the fabric, which means it might ripple slightly. That's okay. Repeat to add cording in this same manner to all six 27" x 11¾" Petal Flora pieces. Make the ties For me I saw a tutorial where she used fabric to make the ties, which is fine if you choose but I decided just to go with orange ribbon because it wasn't near as much work.. But if you want to know how to do it with fabric just comment below and I will send you her tutorial that has the instructions for that part. You will need to cut four pieces of ribbon at 16 inches for each bumper if you choose to just do ribbon like mine! Finish the bumpers Pin a ribbon to the side of a green piece, with the right side of the fabric facing up. Use the template to determine where to put them - you will pin them just below the small dot on the upper corners and just above the small dot on the lower corners. Pin them so the unfinished edge is matched along the edge of the green fabric Stitch the ties in place. Be sure to reverse stitch and normal stick to ensure the hold repeat on all six pieces of green fabric With right sides together, and ties and cording on the inside, pin a blue chevron piece to the green piece. It's very important that you make sure your ties are all facing in and free of the seams. Pin them if you need too 5. Stitch along THREE sides using the zipper foot. On the top edge, stitch slowly and as close to the cording as possible. On the edges without cording stitch using a standard ½" seam. You may change to a regular foot if you are more comfortable sewing with this on these edges. Leave one short edge open for turning and inserting the bumper pads. 6. Turn the cover right side out so the cording and ties pop out... ta-da! 7. Insert bumper pads into the cover. NOTE: It will help give you a nice snug fit if you use the corner template to round the corners of the foam just as you did with the fabric panels. I even had to cut about an half inch off the width too to make them fit right without bunching any 8. Turn under the seam allowance so your seam edges are flush to one another, and slip stitch the opening closed. Tweet

I’m not sure what it is that draws my kids toward the floor, but they would much rather drop a bunch of pillows and cushions on the floor than use a couch or a chair.
