Two weeks ago I was out at my favorite foraging haunt when I discovered these beauties! They were not quite ripe yet then but yesterday about a third were perfect. I had never picked mulberries before. I started by plucking the berries off of the limbs. The wind was blowing strongly, and I thought that the "just shake the branch" technique which I had read about would not work. It was slow going, and I was ready to try something else. I grabbed a branch and gently shook. It rained mulberries! I got out my old sheet and spread it out. Just so you know, mulberries will stain anything they land on. After about 15 minutes of shaking and moving around the tree, I had about two pounds of perfect fresh mulberries. Raining Mulberries Contrary to the children's song, Mulberries are trees and not bushes. The berries are actually not berries but clusters of fruit like grapes that are fused together. There are no hard seeds in them like other similar looking berries. Apparently to those who enjoy the fruit, every Mulberry tree is slightly different. I visited another tree in Nashville several days ago and the berries were hard, sharp and white, not at all like these but still in the same family. Some people dislike mulberries because of the sweet, low acidic and occasionally bland taste. However, different trees have different flavors. When you find one you like, you win the jackpot! The tree I found has excellent flavor, sweet with a hint of tartness making it what I consider a fantastic find! Mulberries will turn your fingers purple! Herbalist claim that mulberries are cognitive enhancers that improve memory and vision. Mulberries have significantly high amounts of phenolic flavonoid phytochemicals called anthocyanins. These berries have shown to have potential health effects against cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes, and bacterial infections. Mulberries also contain resveratrol, another polyphenol flavonoid antioxidant, also found in grapes and supports heart health. They are also excellent sources of vitamin C and iron, among other vitamins. Mulberries are often used for jams, jellies, wine, syrup, sauces and in a variety of desserts. You can freeze, can or dry them. I made cobbler with my mulberries and froze the rest while I wait for the wild crab apples to finish growing so I can make jelly. It is optional whether you want to remove the small stem. I eat them with the stem. It is soft and tasteless, at least right after you pick them! If they will affect the presentation of the desert, recruit some kids to help as it is time consuming. Cut stems off as close to the berry as possible. Mulberry Cobbler Recipe Ingredients: 1/3 cup butter 1 ½ cup all purpose flour 1/3 cup granulated sugar plus 2 tablespoons of sugar 1 cup milk 2 tsp baking powder 2 cups of mulberries (removing stem optional) Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Add the butter to baking pan and place in the preheated oven until butter is melted. In a separate bowl combine dry ingredients. Mix in milk until smooth. Pour mixture in to baking pan containing the butter and drizzle berries on top. Sprinkle with two tablespoons sugar. Bake 40-45 minutes or until golden brown. This is great served with vanilla ice cream.

I travelled to Minneapolis for the Surface Design Association conference which takes place every two years. (I was a SDA conference virgin but can see why people go year after year!) After years of being hosted in Kansas City, it is now changing its location every two years travelling the country looking for another home. Minneapolis was a great start as I had no idea what a textile centre it was!!! There were over 33 textile exhibitions on in the city while we were there, and even though our first day was a choice of 4 different bus tours (how many can you cram in?) we didn't see near as many as we would have like to. I started at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and the show by Jiyoung Chung entitled Whisper-Romance using the traditional Korean method of paper-making called "Joomchi". I LOVED IT!! Since I started my artistic life in paper before moving onto fabric, and always wanted to incorporate the paper and text into my work, I loved what she was doing with this ancient art form. Joomchi is a unique Korean traditional way of making textured handmade paper by using water and Hanji (Korean mulberry papers). Record says that the Koreans started making Joomchi in Chosun Dynasty, 1392 - 1910. Joomchi creates strong, textural and painterly surfaces by layering and agitating. Its usages are diverse and it can be incorporated into surface design, collage, 2D and 3D, and functional objects such as lamps, space dividers, purses, garments. Here is some of her work: And loving the exhibit so much, I was thrilled to attend a demonstration by Jiyoung Chung to see how she makes the paper. People who signed up for her actual class commented on cramping forearms and carpal tunnel syndrome, as the technique is very labour intensive and a very physical activity. I need to get a move on things. I realized this morning that by this time last year, my canning adventures were well under way. I had already canned Blueberry Muffin Jam, Strawberry Jam, Strawberry Black Pepper Jam, Strawberry Mint Black Pepper Jam, and Peach Jam. I've pretty much had blinders on the last couple of weeks as we've been finishing up various projects here on the farm. We moved and expanded the goat yard (putting up fencing is really hard work in case anyone was wondering), converting one of our two barn overhangs into the new chicken coop, and gutting the old chicken coop to serve as the new goat house. It may not sound like much, but with just the two of us to do the work, my husband and I have been working our tails off. We had to get everything done by last Saturday night, as we were picking up three new dairy goats bright and early Sunday morning. I am SO pleased with these three new goats. They come from excellent milk lines, are stand trained (they're ever so patient with my newby milk maid hands), and well mannered. They are incredibly sweet, and snuggly. Gingerbread (left), Butterscotch (Center), and Moon Pie (right). Two of the new goats just freshened and are giving a quart to a quart and a half a day, and the third is a two month old doeling. We've never such a young doeling before, and I'm about to die of all the cute. Two weeks ago, we drove two hours to pick up a goat in milk that we found on craigslist. We didn't find out until we got there that she had been running with several bucks, and may or may not be pregnant. Against my better judgement (and not wanting to waste such a long time on the road), we brought her home. She was almost impossible to milk. We didn't have a milk stand at the time (obviously a huge mistake that I'm laughing at myself for), and she wasn't familiar with the whole milking process (contrary to what we had been told by the previous owners, grrr). She kicked, and screamed, and kicked some more. After half an hour of struggling with her, we finally got about half a cup of milk out of her. Sigh. The milk was okay, but had a bit of a goaty taste to it. I can eat or drink just about anything, especially if its something I've worked so hard to obtain, so you better believe I used it! Until we brought these girls home yesterday, I thought that was just how goat milk tasted; okay, but not up to snuff with cow milk. It turns out that goat milk sans buck scent is seriously incredible. I just polished off a pint of the stuff while writing this post. It's sweet, creamy heaven in a glass. This morning as I was letting the chickens out of their new coop to free range around the farm, I looked over to see one of our many mulberry trees loaded with black, shiny berries. Oh my word. I grabbed a bucket, and began picking. While I was picking, the chickens discovered I had picked an entire bowlful of mulberries 'just for them'. I picked what I could reach, then laid down an old king sized sheet underneath the tree, and shook the branches like a mad woman! Good thing I don't have any neighbors... it looked a little like I was humping the air, and hanging onto the branches for balance. The ducks got wind that there were mulberries to be had, and left their beloved pond to come get some. Otis was very impressed with my harvest. He's pretty much the best cat ever. I ended up with five and a half cups of delicious berries destined for jam. This recipe was adapted from the Ball Book of Home Preserving. Mulberry Jam makes 4 half pints 3 C. Crushed Mulberries (I leave the little stems on, but feel free to take them out) 2 C. Granulated Sugar 1/2 C. Lemon Juice 3 T. Ball Low Sugar Pectin 1/4 tsp. Butter (optional, it reduces foaming while the jam is cooking). Prepare jars, and lids. Combine mulberries, lemon juice, and butter in a 6- or 8-quart saucepan. Whisk in pectin. Bring mixture to a full rolling boil that can not be stirred down, over high heat, stirring constantly. Add entire measure of sugar, stirring to dissolve. Return mixture to a full rolling boil. Boil hard one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim foam if necessary. Ladle hot jam into hot jars leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe rim. Center lid on jar. Apply band until fit is fingertip tight. Process in a boiling water canner for 10 minutes. Remove lid and let stand in canner for additional 5 minutes. Remove jars, cool, and store.
