This is a gorgeous 1890s cotton calico wrap dress. The dress is printed with adorable black shamrocks and white dots and is on a gray checked base. The dress has a high collared neckline and buttons down the front with a puffy almost pigeon-breasted style top. It has large puffy leg of mutton sleeves that are looser for the more casual wear of this dress. The dress is fitted at the waist with a waistband that has two hooks and eyes that keep the dress closed. The skirt wraps to the left to fasten with a hook to the waistband and then there is a slit in the skirt that can be used to access a tie-on pocket if you would like. The slit is well hidden and does not open. The skirt of the dress is a wonderful full A-line with a flounce at the hem. At the center back of the skirt the dress has box pleats that give it more volume and a bit more length. The dress is late 1890s and you can start to see the change in the silhouette to that of the Edwardian era. The dress most likely would have been worn with a slight bum pad to give the back more shape and would not have hung longer but looks lovely without the padding as well. The dress is simple and was meant for home wear. It does have some nice contrasting trim along the collar cuffs and the flounce is black adding a nice pop to the dress. The dress is unlined with no boning. Condition: The dress is in great condition overall with only a few small things to note. The dress has some slight brown staining that is most noticeable down the front along the placket and along the right sleeve. There are also some lighter spots in the skirt and along the trimmed band on the flounce. They are not too bad overall and really do not take away from how lovely the dress is. The only other thing to note is that the hook and eye that fastens the skirt to the waistband were missing and have been replaced with a modern one. Overall this dress is still stunning and in great condition and can still be worn with care. It has been professionally hand laundered and is ready to wear.
