We all know how critical it is to care for our students' social emotional well-being right now. The question, of course, is how! In my last post I shared some overall strategies that I have found successful for fostering social-emotional wellbeing, and today I'm sharing some specific lesson plans, that can be used in person or online, that more overtly focus on social emotional learning (SEL) for different age groups. 1. Allie All Along I absolutely love this lesson for Kindergarten, and I think would work well with Preschool up through 1st grade students. The book gives some great strategies for managing emotions in a way that is so relatable for young children, and it is a perfect segue into a very basic introduction to the idea of communicating emotions through music! This lesson can easily be adapted to any teaching situation, but if you're posting an asynchronous lesson online and don't have time to make your own video reading the book, I recommend this read-aloud done by the author herself. Click below for the full lesson plan I use with this story: 2. Niko Draws a Feeling This lesson works best with 1st grade through 3rd grade- the book introduces the idea of abstract drawing, which I have found very helpful for getting students away from visualizing concrete things as a response to music and focusing on abstract ideas like colors, emotions, and patterns. Again, if you need a read-aloud video, I recommend this one, and you can click below for the full lesson plan: 3. Soundscapes This is a great one for older students: assign individuals or small groups the task of creating their own music to convey a specific emotion, then have them share it with the class and see if others can identify the intended emotion. This is a great conversation starter for older students to talk about emotions because sometimes people have different conceptions of what an emotion might "sound like"! Click below for more details on how I use soundscapes and how I guide students in coming up with a soundscape based on a feeling- the ideas for using classroom instruments can be adapted by using only vocal or found sounds, and/or with online software like Song Maker or Mario Paint Composer: 4. Movie or Video Game Music Creation For middle and high school students, exploring the role of music in film and video games in conveying emotion is a great way to get students talking about emotions and connecting it to music! I have used these projects with my 5th-8th graders but others have used them successfully with older students as well. Click below to see an explanation of how I teach these units and the resources I use: I hope these ideas are helpful! I'd love to hear about your favorite lesson ideas that focus on SEL in the comments below. And if you're looking for more ideas to help you through pandemic teaching, be sure to check out this page where I am collecting all of my related posts:

It's nice to find a new “perspective” on this lesson. The NEWLY inspired idea!!! Vanishing Forms in Splatter Space Have a variety of basic shapes in mind (I have these shapes to trace). Have scraps of colorful construction paper. Trace a shape onto the corner of the construction paper. Trace each corner of the shape to a dot, unless the line goes through the shape. Outline with black colored pencil, shade down the bottom getting darker as you get closer to the dot. Use white to highlight the edges of the shape at the top. We went outside to splatter with a ruler under our brushes to add a better force to the splat. We used tempera cakes instead of liquid paint. Cut out the shapes from the construction paper, gluing them with all the points in the center touching each other. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alternative Vanishing Forms in Splatter Space 1. Draw 5-6 shapes on the perimeter of a white paper. Make sure the shapes leave some open area in the middle of the paper. Include a circle, square, rectangle and triangle. One or two additional free shapes can be added (octagon, star, letter, number) You can trace stencils if needed. 2. Draw a dot in the center of the paper. This is called the VANISHING POINT. This dot will be used to transform each SHAPE (2-D) into a FORM (3-D). 3. Using a ruler, match each point of each shape to the Vanishing Point. Connect each point to the dot using a line. If the point requires you to draw a line through the shape, DO NOT DRAW IT. TIP: These "no line" points are usually the points furthest away from the Vanishing point. 4. You can EMPHASIZE (make stand out) these line and shapes with a thick black marker. 5. Using colored pencils, Shade the tops of the forms with a medium pressure. Use VALUE (going from dark to light) along the side of the form, getting darker as it gets further away. (put to side when done with value). 6. Get a black piece of construction paper. Use bright colored tempera paints to splatter background. This got really messy. Make sure you are dressed appropriately. Let Dry for 24 hours. 7. Cut out forms from paper. Glue down making sure all vanishing points match back to one single point. Make sure all forms are on the paper and not hanging off. Thank you for a new perspective on an old lesson. Here are my old lessons I use to teach this lesson in 1 Point Perspective. Vanishing Forms =========================================================== 2022-23 Vanishing Names 2020-2021 4th period 2022 4th period 2021 5th period Vanishing Names 2005-2012 Kids all over are doing the same things!! See Mrs. Hamilton's Art Class. I like the ones with the Doodles on top. Can you do that? --------------------------------------------- Vanishing Names in computer lab on Microsoft Paint (2004-2013) How to Make Vanishing Names Just like the Vanishing Shapes, but the shapes are more complex with more points and curves. Plan out the spacing of you name (count your letters) and plan out before you make it permanent. Draw light till you know it's right. Once name is centered and spaced out correctly and evenly, Test all points of each letter and take them to the Vanishing Point if you can. Remember, if the line cuts through itself, don't do. If it eventually hits something, quit it. Outline with permanent Marker. Color the tops of letter (or draw designs). Use value down the vanishing edges (darker as it is closer to the Vanishing Point). Other Artists out There... Laus Deo, Internal Boxes

Well here in Wales, St David's day is a big event in schools. We hold an annual Eisteddfod, where the children sing songs and recite poetry as well as making Welsh craft. Lots of prizes and fun galore. As my peg dolls have featured well on Pinterest - I thought I'd add them here. When I worked with reception age children, I made these every year. I prepared all the bits and bobs from my scrap stash - a triangle shawl, a rectangle for the skirt and a little pinny. Although I stopped using doilies as they kept ripping with those sticky fingers! So I used lace instead. The children glued them together and I helped them to tie them with string whilst they dried. The hat by the way, is just a sugar paper circle. Wonky faces...
