Introduce the people that they already know such as teacher, students, along with librarian and principal. Teacher: This is the teacher! These are the students. Teacher: Who is this? She is the Principal. · Place several flashcards on the board to show the difference between he and she. Teacher: He is the waiter! She is the waitress. · What are they wearing? The learning goal is to match the hats to the community helpers. PPlace several kinds of hats on the board and have the students match each community helper to each hat.Have students identify that worksers wear specific hats and clothes. · Community Helpers work in a location. Students can use their visual discrimination skill to match the job to a town location. Use the board to match the workser to their workplace. Place the hospital flashcard in the middle of the board and ask the students who works there. Teacher: Who works at the hospital? Students: The doctor! The nurse!Do the same with the restaurant. Have the students match the people to the workplace. Model a sentence and have the students repeat. Teacher: The bank manager is at the bank. Students: The mail carrier is at the post office. More examples. Ask questions. Teacher: Where does the zookeeper work? Students: At the zoo! All community helpers have tools that relate to them. Hold a tool flashcards one at a time as students identify who uses it. Match the flashcards on the board with your students help. Teacher: Who is this? Students: The nurse! Teacher: What is her tool? Students: Thermometer! Place the community helpers on the board and have the students find their tools and place them next to each person. Or do the opposite, just place the things and have the students find the community helper that the items belongs to. · Have several students come to the front and hand in a random community helper flashcard. Ask questions. Teacher: Who are you? Student: I am a waiter. All your students might be thinking what they want to be when they grow up. Well, have them grab a flashcard and stand in front of the class and say the sentence. Teacher: What do you want to be when you grow up? Student 1: an astronaut! · Play RUN TO!! Place the community helpers flashcards around your classroom, pick different locations such as the door, a window, a backpack, on a desk, in the trash can. Have your students run to a community helper when you describe him/her. Teacher: She has a white coat and a stethoscope. She’s a doctor. · Make a review of the clothes as students have fun sorting all the clothes that the community helpers wear on the board.
