1) Chapter 25 Chapter 25 focused on the significance and effects of Imperialism throughout the world. Primarily, it focused on Britain, The United States, and France taking over Africa, India, China and Japan. Imperialism changed from new to old around the 19th century. Life for the civilizations of these nations changed and not for the better after these main powers took control. Life became much more difficult. I hope to accomplish a better understanding of the United States involvement in imperialism throughout the 19th century, with the help of this blog. EQ: How did the United States use imperialism to their advantage? 2) This political cartoon depicts the imperialist attitude of all of the different nations involved in Africa perfectly. Everyone wanted a piece of Africa, but France and Britain were the two powers who controlled the most land. Everyone wanted a piece. I personally love this It describes imperialism simply and creatively. The pizza is a great representation of Africa at this time. This political cartoon shows us that Great Britain, one of the stronger imperialist powers if not the strongest, wanted a part of every country. They wanted to rule as much as they could and managed to become a very dominant empire. I enjoy this image. The head in the center, with his hat, cracks me up. It is extremely accurate and very creatively done. Both of these cartoon were done by Nyasia Alexander, Jasmine Amaker, Deron Bennet, and Khadesha McLeish. 3) This political cartoon is a representation of The United States' involvement in Syria, a few months ago. Innocent people were being brutally killed, attacked, and blamed for issues that were occurring in Syria. Riots broke out and many people were chemically poisoned. The US, of course, had to step in to sort this mess out. We sided with the people of Syria and went against the cruelty of the government and superiors. We can never mind out own business, but in this case, we needed to step in faster. The gator is obviously there to represent Uncle Sam and the "human rights" of the Syrian people, have died and been buried along with Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain. The author obviously believes that the people of Syria lost the very few right they had to begin with and that United States needed to get involved much faster to save those people. In his opinion, we waited too long. I agree with the artist. We waited much to long to go into Syria. We had a very good idea of what was occurring and we pretended not to notice for such a long time. 4) Is or has the United States been Imperialistic? Yes, I believe that the US has been Imperialistic in the past, but we have not been currently. Three pros to being an imperialistic power are other nations fearing you (which equals respect), modernization (travel, technology, machinery), and having workers that will work for a very small pay (this can be a pro or a con, depending on how you view it). Three cons of imperialism are religions becoming discredited (with imperialism, comes more religions due to the increase in people), loss of cultures that become taken over, and discrimination. 5) 2 major US Events during the 19th century The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. The United States has split into the North (Union), no slaves, and the South (Confederacy) , slaves. Abraham Lincoln was the leader of the North while Jefferson Davis led the South. The Union was much more industry based than the South and had more people and more money. The South primarily made their money off of farming and plantations of cotton. Battles went on four over four years and finally the North came out on top and the Confederates became a part of the United States once again. Great Britain claimed to be neutral throughout the war. They built ships for both side and trade continued. France also "claimed" to be neutral throughout the war but it was apparent that they favored the North. France refused to recognize the south as a separate nation out of fear that the US would attack them. The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States, by France in 1886. It was a gift that represents freedom, liberty, and justice. It was given to the US to commemorate the friendship between the two nations, established during the American Revolution. It also celebrated the 100th anniversary of American Independence. The Satue of Liberty still stands on Liberty Island in Manhattan, New York, one of the largest cities in America. 6) The Sepoy Mutiny, also known as the Great Rebellion or India's First War of Independence, was a rebellion of the Indian people against Great Britain. India was once of Britain's main colonies at this time and Britain had control over them. India imported about 25% of Britain's exports during the 19th century. This rebellion is defined as "the insurrection by Muslim and Hindu mercenaries in the British army that spread throughout norther and central India before finally being crushed." The natives of India, before the rebellion, began rebelling in small ways.India was the Jewel of the British Empire. The Great Rebellion was not very successful for India. The British armies just increased their supervision on the colony, eliminated any sort of local government and imposed stricter laws of the natives. The new British Raj was the head of India after the Sepoy mutiny. 7) http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/16/world/meast/egypt-bedouin-threat/ Country: Egypt Date: January 2012- now Key players: Egypt's military government transforming into a democracy, and the Bedouin Tribe How it happened: "At a meeting last Friday, in the south Sinai desert, Bedouin leaders accused the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of treason against Egypt and warned that- if necessary- they might take up arms to achieve greater representation in the nation's new parliament." The Bedouins continued to protest their very poorly run government after this uprising and heave threatened war against their own military. Outcomes: Violence has occurred throughout Egypt. Random outbreaks have killed civilians and has almost turned into a civil war. More fighting will come if the government does not comply with the Bedouins demands. They have been successful in making themselves known to the Egyptian government and the rest of the world. 8) Due to recent Middle Eastern Events, it is very probable that The Suez Canal is a target for attack for those who oppose Egypt. It is operated by the Suez Canal Authority. The canal runs 101 miles, beginning in the Mediterranean Sea and ending in the gulf of Suez. It takes 11-16 hours to flow through and has radically changed the travel time it takes for world trade. It supports 8% of the world's shipping traffic. At least 50 ships use the canal daily. Our world relies on the canal for trade and shipping. 9) The Suez Canal may be under terrorist attack Why France gave us the Statue of Liberty Pros of Imperialism The Middle Easter Effect (Egypt) on the Suez The United States involvement in Syria Why does the US allow the Middle East to control things such as the Suez?
