So, I've been busy getting my beginning of the year science units together. I start the year off in science the same way I start everything else off--by teaching routines and expectations! We start science on the very first day of school! Day 1: What is Science? I ask the kids what they think "science" is and I record their answers on a chart paper. Be prepared for some pretty funny answers! Then I read What is Science by Rebecca Kai Dotlich. I love this book--it is colorful and fun and really gets kids thinking about science and the world in general! Then, with their minds buzzing with possiblities, we add more ideas to our list. Then I introduce our science notebooks. I tell the kids that these are very special notebooks that will help us ask questions about science; make predictions; record observations and data about investigations; and explain their thinking about what they have learned. I hand out the Science Notebook Expectations and we go over them one by one. Then I show the kids how to glue the expectations in their notebooks--focusing on how to turn one page at a time and how to use glue appropriately...

So, I have to vent for a second. I don't EVER post about my personal life, but I am feeling the need for some bloggy friend support. I have been staying at work SUPER late since school has started this year. I didn't leave the building until 6:30 today and 6:45 yesterday and then I come home and I STILL have stuff to do! My significant other normally travels every week and is home on the weekends. He just recently stopped traveling a few weeks ago and his next work project is located in our own town so he's been home. It is always kind of an adjustment when he is home all the time because he is a VERY active person and enjoys going out and doing things on a regular basis during the week and I just can't keep up sometimes. I, on the other hand, have been swamped with things for school and so I am often doing work on my computer when he gets home. He essentially told me last week that he wasn't happy. It think it mainly comes down to how much time I have been spending doing my work. There are some other things, but this is the major problem. I have been trying REALLY hard to get everything done at school so I don't have to bring anything home, but I just can't seem to get it all done. And to top it all off, I am flippin' exhausted after my BUSY 12 hour day. I have vowed to try harder to do more things with him and around the house instead of coming home and working every day, but I still don't know that I will be able to do this all the time because of everything I need to do and how tired I am from my day. So, I guess I just need your advice...How do you balance it all and have a life?? Seriously...what's your secret?! Anyway, on to the goods! I posted yesterday about my landforms flipbook we made in class this week! Remember, these cute things!? The students finished making theirs today and I totally forgot to take pictures of them! Also, I am in the brainstorming phase of my new Halloween unit and Lord knows when I'll be able to sit down and ACTUALLY work on that with everything else going on in my life right now, but just know, IT will happen sometime before mid October! =) My idea is "Boo in the Zoo: An Animal Themed Halloween Unit." I want to incorporate ELA, Math, and Science all in one. Here are some things I'm thinking: * Animal Research (Bats, Owls, Cats, Spiders, and other creepies) * Spooky and Weird Animal Adaptations * Habitats Trick or Treat (Students would pretend they were going Trick or Treating in each habitat and draw or write things they would find there to add to their Trick or Treat bag) I know it sounds crazy, but I'm still in the thinking phase! =) * Bewitching Words (Students would pick and animal and write describing words) * Monstrous Metaphors & Spooktacular Similes (Animal related of course!) That's all I've got so far! What do you guys think? Any requests or suggestions of things you would like to see included? I'd love your ideas!

Aloha friends! I hope this week is more in synch and flowing smoothly. We had a slow start, but I feel like we are off and running into the 3rd quarter. This year it seems like everyone got on the interactive notebook bandwagon. I was honestly so busy that I didn't really look into it until the end of last quarter. I have always had a science journal, but it never really got used enough. We maybe recorded a few experiments and basically just sat collecting dust. I decided to look into some interactive notebook posts and got a few ideas. This is what I came up with to work for my class. I decided to use one notebook for both subjects. I divided it right down the middle and I put tabs on the pages to separate the sections. I also made a standards page for each subject. What I have included are any worksheets or activities that we do for each topic. We started with maps and globes. Now were moving onto Economics. I am using a variety of activities that I have collected over the years and have now compiled them into my different interactive notebook units. {Click Here} For science we just started with matter. I found some fun poems from various resources and just retyped them. We discussed properties of matter and I had them do some writing. I plan to continue with some experiments and predictions for next week. I am no expert on interactive journals, but I like that I can use a variety of activities and include them in here along with note taking. At the end of the year everything is all in one place. I made a few printables to help get my journals organized. The standards are for 2nd grade here in Hawaii, but there may be a few other things you would like to use. I have decided that I should have been an owl. The later it gets the better I focus and the more work I get done. I hit my stride at 7:30 pm. Here's the only problem with that - I get up at 5:30 am and my mind doesn't slow down until midnight. Sad, I know. Anyway, this will be a quick post. I am going to do my best to be a better blogger this week. We will see how that goes. I definitely seem to be getting more accomplished now that the craft room is functional and I've started listening to old Friday Night Lights episodes. By the way, LOVING my bajillion mason jars full of markers. They came in quite handy tonight. Plus, I love the fact I can work at the laptop, send something to the printer, grab the paper, scissors, and markers, and go to town. Speaking of paper, scissors, and markers, I have a new writing packet to share. It's called my Picture This Writing packet. It was created to give kids the chance to share their favorite places to visit. I've discovered that my kids do SOOO much better with their writing when they have a little craft included with it. Below are pictures. I also made three different types of writing paper so it's easier to differentiate. If you have any questions, shoot me an email and if you like the packet, click on it.
