As viewed from the Walmer Hotel on the corner of South Cliff Rd. In the centre of the picture is the Pier Approach Baths that opened in 1937. The original town baths opened on the site in 1838 and were part of the first wave of buildings erected as part of Sir George Gervis's plans for the "Marine Village of Bourne" that also included the Belle Vue Boarding House, the Bath Hotel and the Westover Villas. The original baths were replaced by the Sydenham's building that housed the second generation baths to the rear, in 1865. It is where The Waterfront [ Imax ] stands today. On the lower right is the rear of some pillared shelters. I don't know if it was intentional or not but they look very similar to the pillared section at the front of the baths building. The shelters were converted into an aquarium and are now incorporated into the Hot Rocks Surf Restaurant that stands in today's Pier Approach. On the upper right is the pier entrance building of 1930 that was demolished in 1979. The current pier entrance building opened in 1981. In the background is Bolson's jetty that stood from 1948 and the mid 70s. Bolsons ran the motor boat excursions from Bournemouth for many years. The trolleybuses replaced the trams and ran from 1933 until 1969, and got their power from overhead cables. Up behind the baths building, running up the south side of Bath Rd are the Lynwood, Kildare and Rothesay Hotels. They were all built around 1870 and were demolished in 1971. Visible on the far left, although not very clearly, is a corner of the Pavilion that opened in 1929. The Belle Vue Hotel stood in the gap between the Pavilion and the road, facing Pier Approach, from 1838 until 1928.
