(This lesson is in accordance with the new Roman Missal that is to be implemented on November 27, 2011.) *Be sure to adjust this lesson to fit the needs of your students. (Please take in consideration that I am just a Mom and I'm providing these lessons and activities to the best of my abilities. I will try to make them as accurate as possible, but I know I will make a few mistakes and it was not intentional.) Gospel means “good news” and the reading is taken from the New Testament. During the Gospel we stand and listen to the priest read from the Book of the Gospels. If incense is used, the priest puts some into the thurible. After this, the deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the priest, asks for a blessing, saying in a low voice: Your blessing, Father. The priest says in a low voice: May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies: Amen. If, however, a deacon is not present, the priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly: Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel. The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, if appropriate, by ministers with incense and candles. There he says: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to N. *At the same time, he makes the Sign of the Cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast. The people make a fist with their right hand and with our thumb we make a small Sign of the Cross on our forehead, on our lips and over our heart and silently pray, “God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.”) People: Glory to you, O Lord. Then the deacon, or the priest, incenses the book, if incense is used, and proclaims the Gospel. At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims: The Gospel of the Lord. All reply: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Then he kisses the book, saying quietly: Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away. Then follows the homily, which is to be preached by a priest or deacon. The homily may even be given by a Bishop or a priest who is present at the celebration but cannot concelebrate. During the homily the people sit. This is when the priest shares special thoughts and ideas with us to help us connect the gospel to our own life experiences. After the homily a brief period of silence is appropriately observed. Questions: What does Gospel mean? (Good News) Do we stand or sit during the Gospel? (Stand) What book is the Gospel read from? (The Book of the Gospels) Is the Gospel from the Old or New Testament? (New) Who reads the Gospel? (A deacon or a priest.) Where do we cross ourselves three times? (Once on the forehead, once on our lips, and once over our heart.) When we cross ourselves three times, what do we say? (“God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.”) Who does the homily? (A deacon or a priest.) Do we stand or sit during the homily? (Sit) What is a homily? (This is when the priest shares special thoughts and ideas with us to help us connect the gospel to our own life experiences.) Craft/Activity: Lesson 11: Preparing for the Gospel- Children Discover the Mass by Mary Doefler Dall An inventive way to help children learn to make the Sign of the Cross on our forehead, on our lips and over our heart and silently pray, “God be in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.” (Craft/Activity directions pages 59 – 60). During the First Reading, what are you supposed to do? (Sit) During the Responsorial Psalm (we join in a prayer that is read or sung) what do we do? (Sit) During the Second Reading, what are you supposed to do? (Sit) When we sing the Gospel Acclamation (“Alleluia”), what are you supposed to do? (Stand) During the Gospel what do you do? (Stand) What do we do during the Homily? (Sit) *If the students do well, mix up the sequence above and see how well they do. Not only is the Creed jam packed with Mysteries and Theological Concepts, but it also contains some pretty tough words, especially in the translation of the Creed for the Third Romal Missal. Here are a few ideas for getting the meaning of those important words through to your students. These are just the tools to use as a vehicle for discussion, but hopefully they prove helpful. Idea One: Popsicle Sticks in a Cup I know, creative title. No directions needed, gather some popsicle sticks, throw them in a cup. Take a minute to write some of the heavier words from the Creed on each stick. Don't just worry about begotten and consubstantial, use other theological terms we sometimes take for granted kids know, like Christ, Scriptures, sins, glory, etc. Use the sticks as a way to introduce or review words. You could have each child randomly pick one, for example, and then challenge them to come up with a working definition using the dictionary, Catechism, and Bible. They then have to share their definition with the class, etc. Idea Two: My favorite beach balls. I have already written about this, but you could do a very similar concept by writing important words or phrases on the beach ball and tossing it around. FYI, don't look too closely at this picture...because it is not a Creed Beach Ball! I need to take a new picture :) Idea Three: Make a vocab flip book. These are fun, and easy to paste into a notebook (more on that later) or lapbook (folder) or hang on the wall. I've got an example for you, but you can use this concept for anything. Click on the document at the bottom of this post to get a printable with seven tough words from the Creed and their "workable" kid definitions. You might not agree that these are the toughest seven words, but they were the ones that I chose because I think that kids have the least context for them. So, to make a flip book, get several sheets of paper, preferably in different colors. (It is much prettier) For this flipbook, I had four sheets of paper roughly 5 x 8.5". Line up those sheets of paper with roughly an inch between them. Fold the stack in on itself so that the top folds down to roughly an inch from the highest flap on the bottom, making a continuous row of flaps. Fold, staple at the top to keep it secure, and glue into a notebook or lapbook if you like. Cut out the printable. "Seven Tough Words" label goes on the top flap. The seven words get their own flap below. Add the definition inside the flap, making sure it doesn't show from the outside. This one is designed so that the definition shares a flap with the word. You could also put in on the underneath of the flap, so it has to be flipped up to be read. You can use this strategy for virtually any other topic or grade level- add pictures, notes, more flaps...

“Have mercy on me, O GOD, in YOUR love. In YOUR great compassion blot out my sin. Wash me thoroughly of my guilt; cleanse me of evil. For I acknowledge my wrongdoings and have my sins ever in mind. Against YOU alone, have I sinned; what is evil in YOUR sight, I have done. YOU are right when YOU pass sentence; and blameless, in YOUR judgment. For I have been guilt-ridden from birth; a sinner from my mother’s womb. I know YOU desire truth in the heart; teach me wisdom in my inmost being. Cleanse me, with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, I shall be whiter than snow. Fill me with joy and gladness; let the bones YOU have crushed rejoice. Turn YOUR face away from my sins and blot out all my offenses. Create in me, O GOD, a pure heart; give me a new and steadfast spirit. Do not cast me out of your presence nor take YOUR holy spirit from me. Give me again, the joy of YOUR salvation; and sustain me, with a willing spirit. Then I will show wrongdoers YOUR ways and sinners will return to YOU. Deliver me, O GOD, from the guilt of blood; and of YOUR justice, I shall sing aloud. O YAHWEH, open my lips, and I will declare YOUR praise.” - Psalm 51:3-17 (This is the finest of the ‘penitential psalms.’ Man stands guilty and unafraid before GOD. Indeed, he sees his guilt, as a reason for mercy and an excuse for hope. A deep sense of sin is already a step toward the sanctity of GOD. It opens the door for HIS eager mercy. But OUR LORD takes us even further than the psalmist. HE teaches us to cry not ‘GOD!’ but ‘FATHER!’ HE bids us think of that father, who ran to meet the son who had left him, the father who took the son in his arms and kissed him: ‘My son was lost and is found’ [Luke 15:24]. Our trust in the FATHER’s forgiveness generously given should exceed that of the psalmist. It is good to pray with this psalm, when we feel overwhelmed by our guilt, be it against GOD or against our brothers and sisters, and we seek the goodness of GOD, who justifies us. When we receive the sacrament of reconciliation, we meet JESUS HIMSELF, the Savior who intercedes, and the FATHER who pardons. Each of our confessions is a joyful celebration of GOD’s mercy and a source of renewal.) On-Site On-Track

Virtue: A Habit to do the good, give the best of yourself, and be more like God in what you say and do. To tie in with our study of sainthood and the universal call to holiness, I decided to do a little more intentional instruction about the virtues. Visit here for the original graphic organizer we added to our notebooks to start things off. Next up: The Moral Virtues. I have been introducing the kids to each of the moral virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. We have been focusing on one virtue each week. I made a printable for them to add to their Sheen notebooks, which I printed half sized to better fit on a notebook page. Both full size and 2-per-page options to print can be found below. We talked about the virtue and then recorded some practical examples in the section that says "prudence in action." Mindful that growing in holiness, which we are all called to, means growing in virtue, each kid then made a goal related to that virtue to work on for the week. They wrote their goals on post-it notes and then stuck them on this poster on the door. I love this poster- It has gotten a lot of mileage. Simply a piece of posterboard divided into squares that are about 4x4" and marked with the numbers 1-30, it allows the kids to stick a 3x3" post-it note recording their thoughts or questions on a particular topic quickly. I added a page protector at the top so I could easily create a title or question for the top of the poster. This is just is latest use. We also created a class goal for the virtue, decided on by the kids, and we worked on it all week (and it continues to come up in the weeks following). For example, prudence's goal was to choose to be positive when it would be easier to be negative. Justice's goal was to include everyone in conversations and games. They are doing a great job finding the practical in something that can seem very theoretical. Later, I will post the Theological Virtue note pages, as well as classroom encouragement system that we are using to link our study of virtue with our study of the life of Fulton Sheen.
