Since I will be out tomorrow for a dentist appointment, I figured this would be a good time to post about my sub binder. If there is one organizational thing that I'm proud of, it's my sub binder. Let's face it - subs have a tough enough time as it is without going into a classroom where they don't know the daily procedures and expectations. So I try to make it as easy and painless as possible for my guest teachers. I keep my sub binder on the chalkboard near my desk so it's visible in case of an emergency. My kids also know where it is. When I know I'm prepping my room for a sub, I put it on my desk. I recently made my binder nice and colorful. My intro is just a welcome with basic information such as which teachers can help with lessons, and which students are helpful. After that starts my daily procedures. My Daily Procedures section is several pages long. I want to make sure that the information is there in case they need it. But I think with the font size, spacing, and sub-headings, it's not too overwhelming. My Classroom Management page explain my attention signal, rewards, and consequences. I also have a quick run-down of the daily schedule. Emergency procedures for fire drills, etc. I include a list of which students are pulled on each day (for academic support, speech, etc), as well as a map of the school. On the map I highlighted important room, and drew arrows showing how to get inside the building from our portables. In rare circumstances, I may be so sick I am unable to get to my classroom to prepare for a sub. Though it is unlikely to happen, and I haven't ever had to use it, I have emergency plans laid out just in case. At the back of the binder I have time fillers such as word searches just in case my class finishes their work early. I also have a form that I leave for the subs where they can leave notes for me and tell me about their day. This is a link to get to my sub binder word document. As with the sub plan template, I took out some identifying information for privacy's sake, which is marked in red. Yup, I'm proud. :)

Week two of PD in Plain English has arrived! 🎉 I love talking about the things that I wish I had known sooner in my teacher life, and I can say with total confidence that the first weeks of my first few years of teaching were a total blur. So today I wanted to chat with y’all about the first week

Nicole, kindergarten teacher and creator of Mrs. Ricca's Kindergarten, came up with this cute first week of school lesson to go along with David Shannon's David Goes To School that will help you address the issue of classroom behavior with your new kinders. The best part is, she provides free printables to go along with it! Using her printables, we revised the lesson a bit to suit our needs. While the original lesson shows the use of a pocket chart, we didn't have one handy so we simply pieced together pieces of scrapbook paper to act as a 'frame' for the lesson. Additionally, we created our own headings, mostly because we wanted to incorporate our own clip art to mimic our voting paddles {see photo below}. We wanted to create an interactive lesson, so the goal is to present the kiddos with each behavior option and have them hold up a "thumbs up" sign if they think it's a good choice or a "thumbs down" sign if they think it's a poor choice. The change in clip art meant we had to revise the cut and paste activity as well. We created our own activity sheet and used the original behavior cards to create new squares for students to cut apart and paste to the worksheet. [NOTE: We liked the continuity of using the same behavior cards in the review activity as were used in the original class discussion/anchor chart. We printed the cards in black and white and figured kiddos could use the completed discussion chart for help if they were unsure in which column the item should be glued. However, Nicole does provide a set of separate cards to use so you don't have to create your own!] Overall, we think this is a great way to discuss what positive classroom behavior looks like!
The movement away from harsh discipline policies and toward positive discipline and accountability approaches is aimed at keeping children in school.

Being a brand new school librarian is both exciting and scary. All summer, you’ve planned for your new position, but today, you're feeling pretty lost.
At this time of year (end of August) I have so many mixed emotions. I am sad that the summer is drawing to an end, but I am excited for the new school year: envisioning my new students and the projects that we will be working on. Here are some ideas for the first week back. 1. "Trouve quelqu'un qui..." (Click here for the original document) This is always a favourite. Photocopy one sheet per student. Students have to go around the class asking other students "Est-ce que tu aimes...." then they write the student's name on the square if they find one. Can enter a student's name only once on the sheet. 2. "Qui suis-je?" Photocopy one questionnaire per student. After students have completed the questions, collect the questionnaires and choose one. Have a random student come to the front to read the answers on the questionnaire. - Class has to guess who they are describing. OR - Class members all stand up, then sit down as the description is read when they know it's not them. This continues until there is one person left. (Thanks Kim Gaiswinkler for this great idea!) I have also put the questions on a Google form. You could collect the data from the students and then look at the visuals of the data with pie charts and graphs (very cool). Please email me if you want editing access to this form. [email protected] 3. "Projet Selfie" Students go around the school taking selfies, then put together a presentation (with iMovie, 30hands, Powerpoint, Google presentations, etc.) describing where they are. Click here for the original document with full instructions. 4. "On se présente" With Voicethread.com, students describe themselves by answering questions. Click here for an example. You can make a copy of this same presentation if you create a VT account and log in. Then, - Go to the last slide - Click on "+Add to MyVoice page" - Click on gear icon (menu) - Click on "Make a copy" - Click on "Don't include any comments". Your students will have to create their own VT accounts before they can add their comments. 5. WordFoto App With this amazing app students can take pictures of themselves and then populate it with adjectives to describe themselves. Even better: have students take pictures of a friend/classmate and then find adjectives to describe their friend (it's much easier to find complimentary adjectives for a friend than for oneself!). Here is one I made for my daughter: What are some of your favourite First-week-back activities? Bonne rentrée tout le monde! Sylvia
