A few weeks ago I was preparing professional development for first and second year teachers in my school district. New teachers not only need the basics of classroom management, routines, procedures and relationships....but this year they also need training on how to effectively be a remote educator. The first year of teaching is difficult under normal circumstances, but this is no normal year. I feel for these first year teachers as so much extra is being added to their already overflowing plate. To acknowledge the amount of stress each new teacher is facing, I started with a What's On Your Plate? activity. This is a great activity to use with any age (youth all the way to adults)! The purpose of the activity is for participants to honor all of the issues and tasks they have on their mind. We have all heard the analogy, "My plate is really full." Which is a code phrase for, "My brain is so full, I literally can't fit any more in it!" We have all been there. We all know how stressful a full or overflowing plate can be. Whats On Your Plate? gives participants a chance to get all of those thoughts swimming around in their brains out on paper. This activity acknowledges how many responsibilities and commitments everyone has, and then allows them to set those thoughts aside and be fully present for the meeting, class period, activity, etc. See below for materials, instructions and plate example.

From the Game Gal Here's a list of words to play the drawing game pictionary or a similar game. Have students take turns drawing a word silently on the board. The rest of the class tries to guess which word the student is drawing. The words are medium difficulty level - not super hard, not really easy. You can cut along the lines to cut the words into strips that students could draw from a bowl, or just read the words out loud. In May I put out this blog post about some of the creative, playful ways I was working with kids and using telehealth. I wanted to update you with some more ideas. The 20-21 school year is markedly different because the children are on screens much more than in the spring and summer, so I need to find new creative ways to engage them! I will discuss some ideas that will work for 1:1 work or small groups, and even some ideas for pushing into classrooms virtually. I also collected a lot of fun ga
How many of us realized back in March, that so much of our lives would still be virtual? From church services, to school, we are very much tied to the online world. Though our state is slowly starting to open up again, we are still being discouraged from gathering in person. Because of that, we […]

Last year the cup stack was one of my FAVORITE team building activities (see post here). So, naturally, I wanted to give it another shot! The Cup Stack is a fun, yet challenging activity that promotes team work. The supplies are basic: cups, string, rubber bands. I go ahead and tie the string to the rubber bands so it is ready to go. I make a few for groups of 4 and a few for groups of 5, this way no matter what the numbers are in the classroom I can make it work. I start by asking students what teamwork is. What does it look like? sound like? feel like? We brainstorm a list of ideas that I hang in the classroom for students to refer to. Each class comes up with a variety of ideas, but they all center around the same theme. Then I introduce their challenge. I start off my admitting that this will be a frustrating activity. We discuss ways to handle our stress and feelings that arise when others make a mistake or don't do what we want them to do. I model that they will each be given 6 cups and a rubberband with strings attached to it. Their job is to stack the cups into a design by only holding onto their individual string. I demonstrate that when everyone pulls on their string the rubberband opens wider, and vice versa. I also show them the challenges of picking up a cup that has tipped on its side or fallen on the floor. No matter what happens, they must follow the one rule: YOU CAN ONLY TOUCH YOUR STRING. No touching the rubber band, no touching the cup, and no touching other group member's strings. I reinforce how communication is so important in order to reach the goal. Then I set them off. Here are some videos and pics. After about 10-15 minutes, we pause and reflect on our experiences. I ask them to rate their group on how well they worked together using the ideas we wrote at the beginning of the lesson. I ask them what went well for their group. I also ask them what didn't go well for their group. We talk about different strategies and ways we an handle ourselves when things don't go the way we want them to. Throughout the activity I walk around and facilitate positive communication, so I usually have a few examples to help springboard the discussion.

Bring calm, focus and social emotional learning support into your in-person or distance learning classroom using these effective 48 Mindfulness Brain Breaks. Now in both printable and Google Slides™ digital formats with pre-recorded narration and music. TRY A FREE SAMPLE HERE! What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the here and now without judgement. It can be practiced where ever we find ourselves, in whatever we are doing. The first step into the present moment is breathing with awareness. By simply zooming our focus on breathing-in and breathing-out, we can quiet our minds, reduce felt sensations of stress, and cultivate compassion for self and others. How Mindfulness Helps: As educators (and parents), we often expect, tell, even demand that young people focus and pay attention. Yet many times we fail to model, guide, and teach them how to do this. By integrating more mindful moments into our own lives, and bringing simple, but very powerful, practices into our schools (and homes), we can help young people nurture the seeds of awareness, reflection, executive functioning, and emotional regulation. What the Research Says: Research shows that practicing mindfulness is an effective coping strategy for anxiety, anger, depression, trauma and other social emotional challenges. It builds neurological pathways that promote presence, attention, and self-regulation. And in the context of school, mindfulness can help students to refocus on the task in front of them and bring calmness during transition times. Mindfulness improves both social-emotional and academic learning. Plus, the very nature of mindfulness exercises are experiential, which we know is one of the most impactful ways to cultivate not only learning but also the JOY of learning. ❤️ Creating a Trauma Sensitive Classroom ❤️ More and more children and adolescents are coming to school in a heightened state of protectiveness and on-guardedness, as an adaptive strategy to survive the challenging experiences in their lives. These brain break activities are especially useful for cultivating a mindful, trauma-informed classroom.
