This time of year my students are studying different types of graphs-- and I decided to make their activities a little more exciting than just filling out a page from our math curriculum. Here are some suggestions for making graphing fun in your classroom! I usually follow these same steps no matter the type of graph-- but I usually teach the graphs in this order: bar graph, pictograph, and line plot. 1) I always begin with a fun introduction-- Star with this FREE video from BrainPopJr.! My kids love bringing their whiteboards to the floor and answering the questions while the video is playing! (Be prepared to pause at the right moments!) 2) Next, we practice the graph whole group! So I come up with a quick question like "What is your favorite color?" or "How many pets do you have at home?" (something simple). I have a volunteer keep tallies on the board, and then we turn those answers into our own very own class bar graph! (Also, I recommend doing it on anchor chart paper so you can always refer back to it) Check out this anchor chart from That Teaching Spark: 3) Have them practice using technology! I have a set of 12 student computers, so I can cycle students through as a center to practice different graphs! Here are some bar graph websites I found just by searching "bar graphs 3rd grade interactive": Fuzz Bugs Interpret Bar Graphs (IXL also has other practice options for each type of graph!) Bar Graph Creator (allows you to change the numbers and labels to make a bar graph) Mr. Nussbaum: Bar Graphs (quick quiz) 4) Partner students up and hand out containers of objects that you've prepped ahead of time. (This is a great option if your school doesn't allow sugar!) I use Ziploc bags or small Tupperware filled with these types of items: Lego pieces Unifix cubes Puff balls Stickers Mini erasers Buttons Give each group a blank graphing freebie page, and I also have a generic bar graph question page for your students to use after they create their graphs! 5) Let them try it "hands on" by themselves! I always like to do candy graphing (use any candy that comes in different colors)! It's simple yet effective! I buy the packages of individual M&Ms, but you could easily buy larger bags and separate them into baggies or bowls. Here is an easy print-and-go graphing product you can use to help your students be more engaged: 5) Practice and review. I go back every day for a few days after introducing the graph and quickly review. I will pull up IXL on my board and we will answer a few questions-- or I will find a quick graphing page for them to practice with! This let's me know who still needs help and who's got it down! 6) Repeat this process for pictographs and line plots. You can find several ideas for graphing on my Pinterest board-- and Teachers Pay Teachers also has many valuable resources! Don't be afraid to search around for fun ideas for your unit! Here is one last freebie I've used this year (click pic to see): How do you handle graphing your classroom? Thanks for stopping by our blog-- I hope you found something useful today!

This water lab is a super fun way to introduce nonlinear functions in an algebra class. The math department at my school uses this lab as a way to start the school year in Algebra 2. The students love it, and by the end of the lab every student understands what it means to be an algebraic function!
My first year teaching was...interesting (I'm sure you can relate). I spent most of the year, as so many do, in survival mode. But somehow towards the end of that year I created a lesson that has created so much buzz ever since (even 8 years later)! I've used it every year with my Algebra 1 students, used it to apply (and got accepted) onto LearnZillion's Dream Team to help create content for their site, and even had a blog written about a picture taken from this lesson (full story here). I fully believe the more lessons we have like this to ease students into complex topics, the better they will grasp them. This is a conceptual understanding task meant to introduce students to parabolas. A low floor, high ceiling activity where students create different rectangles with an area of 40, hang their rectangles on the graph, and then see the parabola magic happen! A great discussion point for key vocab such as vertex, symmetry, x-intercepts, maximum/minimum and so much more! Included in this lesson: CCSS Standards Detailed explanation of how I use this lesson with my students Student Worksheet Blank Graph for Projection (to hang rectangles on) Filled in graph with rectangles (in case you don't have time to hang them) Terms of use and my contact info/pages to follow. I hope you love this lesson as much as I do! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and be sure to leave feedback so I know what you think of this lesson! Also check out my blog for lots of free lesson ideas and new product updates!!

This fun activity requires students to practice NEATLY graphing quadratic functions. Students will graph 8 parabolas. There are 2 versions of the worksheet included: one with quadratics already in factored form, and one with expanded quadratics that students must factor themselves. As students graph each parabola, they write the letter of the function next to the monster that it went through. A great activity for Halloween, but fun any time of the year! Visit the Math Cat Store to find more activities that are engaging for students and time-saving for you! Don't forget to leave feedback! For every review, you'll earn 5% back toward future TpT purchases. I read every comment and greatly appreciate the feedback! This is my second year using my transformation project as an assessment and I love it! See my previous post here, transformation summative assessment, for all the details. The timing of this project couldn't be any more perfect as it falls the week before winter break. My kids were so busy and engaged while they worked on this. I had music playing and we all had a great time. The key to this assessment is that it never leaves the room. I've debated long and hard about whether to post the students pictures because students could google and find this to copy. (Just to let you know, there are errors in all of these pictures.) I would love to hear your opinions about whether to post student work or not. As I said, the way I get around the copying is that this never leaves the room and they have to work on it while I am present. Even if they get ideas from other places, they still have to do all the work. With that said, here are some of my favorites from this year. We had our winter theme. This student did all of her transformations from the pre-image. There are all levels of difficulty in these pictures. I told the students to make a picture between 10 and 30 points, but not to go over 30 because that makes it too hard to finish in our 3 1/2 periods. There were a couple of students who drew pencils and both were different. I love these hats! This student chose boxing gloves. On this one you really have to look at the points to see what the transformations are because it is so symmetrical. This picture reminds me of a Dr. Seuss illustration. The emoticons were very popular and hard to draw. This student worked so hard, and had to tape an extra sheet of graph paper to the back for her picture to fit, and then had graph paper with the plastic that wouldn't let her write on it. It was exhausting! She worked so hard I had to post it. Another emoticons. They call them emo gees or emogees, but I don't know how to spell that and either does spell check. Nice candy canes, they ate some while they were working. There is always a clown in every class and here he is. His last transformation is not correct but he made me laugh and was creative. Hope you enjoyed these. Have a wonderful holiday season. Til next time, Jan

I teach in WI and we have to create an SLO for Educator Effectiveness each year. For the last few school years, my SLO has been as follows (and feel free to use it if it works for you!!)-- "By the end of the __ school year, 90% of students will get a 8 or better on the 10-point graph grading rubric." I give a graph prompt to my students for almost every unit; they take students anywhere between 5-20 minutes to complete. They get a bit harder as they go. In this bundle, you get the 12 graph prompts I used with my students (see topics in my product preview). The graphs are always line, bar, double line, or double bar graphs. I start off telling students what kind of graph to make, and I gradually remove the support. I also have the keys included in this bundle. The keys have all the graphs filled in, along with the questions at the end answered. Besides working on graphing skills, students have to work with the data in various ways: - identify independent/dependent variables - identify experimental error - add in prediction lines - write CERs using the data - and more. The 10-point rubric I use is included; feel free to create your own if mine does not suit your needs. All graph prompts are in Word, so you can change/add questions as wanted/needed! Again, this version of my bundle DOES have answer keys and my rubric. I sell a less expensive version of this bundle without the answer keys. This is NOT a growing bundle- it is a complete resource.
PRINT and DIGITAL * * Makes distance planning so much easier! Graphing Linear Equations Math and Art Project Your students will apply their skills of graphing linear equations with art! Students will graph specified types of linear equations and choose how they create an original piece of art. My students love this project because it provides an opportunity for them to be creative in math class! This project is a great formative assessment because it assesses students’ skills and is highly engaging! My students are so proud of the art they create! I created two forms of this project. The second form is more challenging than the first form. This allows you to differentiate based on your students’ needs. TPT buyers said, "Loved the freedom it gave students to express themselves but use Algebra!", "This project was really fun because they got to be creative and everyone had a different picture. They liked seeing them hanging in the hall.", "This was a really fun wrap-up activity after learning all about linear functions", "love this". "Great!" "My students were excited about this project because it was different than book work. They were able to be creative and apply math skills that they've learned over the past month." I included a rubric and a peer evaluation, which requires students to further apply their skills of linear of equations as they verify that the equations do model the graphs of the lines.
