We have a baptism coming up where there will be a lot more children than usual in the congregation. We want to do something that will help the children to engage with what is going on, so I've come up with a play dough mat to help them explore the signs and symbols they might see being used: A cross to represent the sign of the cross made in oil on the candidate's head A dove to represent the Holy Spirit A heart to represent God's love for us Water to represent cleansing and being born to new life Candle to represent being sent out in the light of Christ This mat could also be used when discussing baptism symbols with children before baptism (if they are old enough!)- the pictures prompting conversation about why each symbol is important and what it means. Click here to print off the mat. Have fun exploring!
So I saw something online about God's promises and I don't think we can tell & remind and tell again kids (not to mention adults like myself) enough how much God loves us and how He promises to keep so many promises to us. I chose just 10 for this activity. (Please note the following pics were taken before I made some edits... now it says "God Keeps His Promises) Start by cutting out the promises and writing your own name on the line. Then as you read the scriptures and match the promise, glue the promise over the verse reference. You end up with a page of promises to hang up somewhere in your home to remind you that God Keeps His Promises!! Since I'm pretty sure just about every kid wants to make cookies pretty much every activity, I tied this "God Keeps His Promises" worksheet in with baking... "As sure as dough bakes in a hot oven". I figure while the dough is baking, this would be the perfect activity to work on. I made recipe cards for 4 different recipe... pick your poison! Also in both pink and teal styles! Happy Monday! The first week back after Christmas break is over and you're back in the swing of things! Time to start pluggin' in some new ideas into your daily routine! Yesterday in our Sunday School class, we played a really fun (yet ridiculously simple to make) game to help review the lesson we were learning for the day. We were learning about the 12 sons of Jacob (characters from the Bible), and I was looking for a fun way to review them, so I decided to do a little "Guess Who" game. It's so simple friends, that I can barely even call it DIY because *I* didn't really do much accept for spend about 5 minutes on the computer creating the following two pages. This top picture has boxes with the pictures of Jacob and his 12 sons on it (images found here). and the bottom picture has the same sized boxes, but no pictures. I had the students cut out their picture boxes (see - so easy, I didn't even have to do the cutting!). They then set the up 2 file folders like shown below (I paper clipped them together so that they would stay together. You'll also notice I stuck an object (a bell, in my case) in between the folders to keep the top half from falling over. The students then placed their blank box sheet on their side of the folder and placed the picture cards in any order on top of the blank boxes. Again - notice who is doing all the work :) Not me! I then had a separate set of the picture cards, one set per partner group (this was in ADDITION to the cards that they cut up). Once students set up their board placing all pictures on the box, I had each partner group pick a person from the additional picture card set and paper clip this picture in the corner on the top of the file folder. (Ex. The picture below shows "Levi" clipped in the corner). This became the person that their partner would try to guess. Students played the game using the regular "Guess Who" rules asking their partner yes/no questions about their secret person. (ex. Does your person have a striped belt?). Students would remove people off their board as they eliminated who their partner's person might be. Once a partner had won, the students could rearrange their board as they wanted to and choose a new picture card and play again. So, how can you use this idea in your classroom? EASY! Choose characters from a book, historical figures, or any other group of people your students need to review. It would even make a great game to tuck away for now and use at the beginning of the school year by using pictures of your students and have students guess which classmate their partner has. What a great way for your students to get to know their classmates at the beginning of the year!!
This is the last lesson for the book of Acts! This is a review of the life of Paul. There is a booklet that I have used and have the kids flip through the pages with me and as I am telling the Bible lesson, I hand out a little item that will hopefully remind them of that part of Paul's life. They put the items in their Fact Bags to take home. This is another of the kid's favorite lessons! I begin the lesson by using the printed book. First is some background about Paul. Page 2 talks about Paul being born in Tarsus, and page 3 talks about his family and his dad being a tentmaker. The string is for tent making. You can print a baby here. Page 4 discusses Paul going to school and the languages he learned. Then we begin reviewing what we studied. Stephen is first on page 5 and the book also talks about Paul getting permission to put the Christians in prison. I handed out backpack cutouts and you can print lips for the languages here. We were first introduced to Paul when Stephen was being stoned and Paul stood and watched. The people put their coats at Paul's feet. I handed out small rocks here. Paul received permission to go into people's houses and drag them to prison. Acts 8:3-4 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. Paul approved of Stephen being stoned to death. Click here to print a letter. Paul was blinded by the light on his way from Jerusalem to Damascus. A loud voice said "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" After 3 days, when Paul had his sight back, he was baptized immediately, even before he ate! After 3 years, Paul returned to Damascus. There were some Jewish leaders that were now angry at Paul and planned to kill him. The Christians heard about their plans and Saul escaped in a basket down a wall. He left the city on foot. Print a basket here. Click here to download. Saul met with Barnabus, and they went together to strengthen a new church at Antioch. This is where the people noticed that there were differences in the people following Christ, and so they called them Christians. (Acts 11:26) They stayed there for a year. Paul and Barnabus traveled together teaching people about Jesus. They healed sick people. The people in Lystra thought they were gods because they could heal. They took Paul outside the city and stoned him. I handed out Band-Aids here. They worked with Timothy and met Lydia in Philippi. She made purple cloth. I handed out small pieces of purple cloth and shells here. When Paul and Silas were put in prison, they were singing and praying. At midnight, God made an earthquake shake the jail and their chains fell off! The guard took them home and his whole family were baptized! (The music notes are to represent Paul & Silas singing in prison. I found these at the local teacher's supply store.) In Corinth, Paul made tents with Aquila and Priscilla. Paul wrote his first letter there. It was 1 Thessalonians. Paul also wrote 2 Thessalonians and 1 & 2 Corinthians while he was there. I found the packs of money at Dollar General. While Paul was in Ephesus, there was a silversmith that used silver to make idols of Diana. What does God say about that? Thou shalt not! Demetrius was really angry because he made a lot of money selling them, and there was pandemonium in the city. The coins are at Party City in a big bag of 144 coins. When Paul was in Caesarea, a prophet named Agabus took Paul's belt and told him that if he went to Jerusalem, he would be taken prisoner. Did that stop him? Did that slow him down? Oh, no, he said that if that is God's will, he was more than happy to go to prison for God. I cut strips of fabric that wouldn't fray into strips. You can print a soldier here. Paul did go to Jerusalem, and the people got so angry at Paul, that the soldiers took him as a prisoner for his own safety. The wild mob was trying to beat him to death, so the soldiers took him to the barracks. Paul told them that he was a Roman citizen, so they knew they had to be careful. (Handout the above soldier picture here) There were 40 Jewish men that planned to kill Paul. When Paul's nephew heard the Jewish leaders talking about killing Paul, The soldiers took him to the Governor Felix during the night. He was in prison for 2 years until Festus took over. Festus heard Paul's case and then asked King Agrippa to hear Paul's story. (The crowns were at Dollar Tree, but crowns can be found at a teachers supply store.) King Agrippa said to Paul: "Almost you have persuaded me to be a Christian." Paul said "I appeal to Caesar." So Paul was put on a ship to Rome. Luke and some other friends traveled with Paul. The seas were really rough because it is autumn (fall). After 14 days of not seeing the sun during the day, or the stars at night, they saw land. Paul broke bread, said a prayer, and they ate to have the strength to swim to shore. (I hand out a boat here. [Next photo]) The ship hit a sandbar and the ship cracked in half. The soldiers unchained the prisoners and everyone swam to shore. The ones that couldn't swim, floated with a piece of the ship. They arrived on the island of Melita, now called Malta. The islanders built a bonfire to warm them. As the wood warmed up and Paul was gathering wood, a viper (poisonous snake) clamped on Paul's hand and he had to shake it off! The islanders couldn't believe that he wasn't showing any signs of snakebite! Paul healed people on the island, and after 3 months, the island people gave Paul a ship and everything they needed to finish their trip to Rome. (I hand out the vipers now in above photo) When Paul finally got to Rome, he had his own place, but had guards. Paul didn't get to plead his case to Caesar for 2 years, and while he waited, he wrote letters and told people about Jesus. I printed the scrolls on a granite type paper. I added dowel rod and ribbon to tie it after it is rolled up. You can print it here. This lesson will be effective to just use the booklet and not the handouts, but I this is what I like to do. As they fill the Fact Bag, they are reminded of each lesson they learned about Paul. When they go home and look through the Fact Bag, they should be able to remember and tell their parents what they studied. So, for each part of the lesson, you will see the visual picture and a picture of whatever I used to hand out. I either purchased it or printed it. Most of the printables will have links at the end of the corresponding paragraph. You can also put the items in the Fact Bag before class. You can hold up one item and show them what is in their Fact bag and give them the Fact Bag as they leave class. Click here to download the Fact Bag Labels. Click here to download the updated teacher's visuals as shown. There are small Event Trading Cards included also! This is the book that the kids followed with me as we did the lesson. I wrote it like Paul is telling about his life, and I made sure to make it clear that I wrote it and not Paul. What I did for the downloads is put the 2 pages together that should be printed on the front and back of the same piece of paper. That makes 4 separate downloads to print the book. Click on the page numbers to print. cover/last page Pages 2-3 & 12-13 4-5 & 10-11 6-9 You can print today's worksheet here. You can find all the Acts worksheets here. President Nelson recently said: In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost. In an effort to play off the word "survive" and since my family is obsessed with the show survivor, I wanted to make and activity with challenges and word puzzles and tons of FUN! Here is what I came up with.... You can save this as an image on your phone from this blog and use a text editor to fill in the place, date and time :) We do electronic invites via text and GroupMe in our ward! After printing, it took me about 30 minutes to prep. I rolled the challenges into scrolls and tried them with burlap string. I cut out the puzzles and tied the name tags. Only other prep is gathering the pens, cups, cottons balls and spoons :) To start the activity, I would read the welcome letter and explain that each round has 1 challenge and 1 puzzle. Whoever wins the challenge gets to do the puzzle. I tried really hard to tie the challenge to the gospel standard it related to. For example: I will follow Heavenly Father's plan for me = challenge is a maze I will choose the right = challenge using only your right hand I will dress modestly (from head to toe) = longest handstand This reward challenge can be used however you want! During the game or at the end.... I made these so if you fold down the top and then start rolling from the bottom you can tie it and still see what number challenge it is. HOW THE ACTIVITY WENT FOR ME: I did a trial run for this activity with my daughter and a few of her friends - and we had a TOTAL blast. When they got to the activity, I had all the girls fill out their name tag/tribe necklace (everyone is part of the Nephite Tribe) There are white circles where I used a hole punch and then used burlap string that I got at the dollar store to make it into a necklace by taping the back. After reading the Welcome Scroll, we started on the challenges. The first challenge is going through a maze. I tried tying each challenge to the Gospel Standard as well as I could :) The tribe member that wins the challenge, gets to solve the puzzle. I was worried the same person would keep winning all the challenges but it was actually pretty even! After solving the puzzle, have the tribe member read the Gospel Standard to the group. Then tape it together and if possible, post it where everyone can see it. If we were at a church, I would post it on the chalkboard. Making a tower of 5 cups.... this ended up being a favorite challenge! I recommend NOT doing what I did and assuming I had solo cups in my basement... I had to use cups from my cupboard and that changed the game a bit. SOLO cups or a cup like it would have been much better. We ended with a Reward Challenge where everyone got a treat! My files for this activity are available HERE
