Using word banks in your classroom is so helpful. Use them for writing center displays, class picture dictionaries, labels, and more!
Teaching silent letters can be so much fun! In my classroom, we call these letters ghost letters! It really helps the kids learn the sounds. To begin, we make a list of all the words we can think of! At first, the kids will usually give words that just start with n or r, instead of words with kn or wr. But they quickly get the hang of it! Sometimes I even draw ghosts around the letters on the board or in their books. I LOVE when they even draw them on words they find! :) We sort words and highlight those spooky little letters. We play games to practice reading words with ghost letters. This Roll & Read helps build fluency AND practices those words. The kids always love this fun little book. They read a ghost letter word. Read a sentence with that word. Then create their own sentence. They get pretty creative with these! Then we end with a fun little mini craft. :) As a class, we brainstorm words with kn, wr, mb, and gn. They we add them to our own spooky little ghosts. They'll remember those ghost letter forever!!! Hop over and check out this fun pack!

Hello Everyone! It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit. Here are some pics from the updated unit! If you would like the 30 page free printable unit CLICK HERE!! :) My second offering for today is a unit our curriculum team worked on this summer. We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in. This next unit is about other important historical figures. It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities. It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!! Here are a few pics from the unit! For your free 52 page Inventors Unit CLICK HERE!! :) So glad I had time to share these endeavors! Hope you can use at least parts of either one! It is my joy to be able to share and help your journey in the classroom or homefront become a little less stressful. As always, please let me know if this is something you can use, if there are any typos or problems, and if you would like to see something else in particular on this little blog. I hear from teachers and parents from all over the world, and I am so grateful for all of you!! Joyfully! Nancy

I like to spend a couple weeks each year teaching my students about poetry. We do a number of fun activities in addition to reading and writing different poems. We have a poetry battle, rank poetry, make a poetry journal, and much more! Here is a look into my poetry unit.... To kick off my poetry unit I have my students each complete this KWL Chart about Poetry. We then discuss what poetry is, what a poet's purpose is, what poems can have, etc. I use and display these posters during my unit! Over the years I have found poems that are great for young children to listen to. Instead of having multiple books that I have to search through to find the poem I want to read, I have typed the poems on individual pages and compiled them together. Each day I choose two different poems to read to my class. After reading the two poems, my students each vote on which poem they liked the best. We fill in the Poetry Battle bracket together. By the end of my poetry unit my class has found their all-time favorite poem (which is usually Brod Bager's poem Booger Love)! I also like for my students to fill out the Ranking Poetry page after listening to a poem. I like for them to fill these out after listening to poems that have the different parts of figurative language in them that we have learned about. Here are some of the different figurative language topics that I cover during my poetry unit. Each poster has the term, definition, and example. If you are looking for Figurative Language Posters click HERE to download my 23 Figurative Language Posters from my TpT Store! Each student makes their own Poetry Journal throughout my unit. They choose the cover of their journal. They color, cut, and glue it on the top of a brad folder. Each poem the student writes gets hole-punched and added to their folder! Each student also fills out the "About the Poet" page and adds it as the first page to their poetry journal. Here's a look at the different poems we learn about and write throughout the unit. I usually pick one poem a day to teach and have the students write during our allotted writing time. I slip a parent note in the first pocket of the folder and send each student's poetry journal home. The parent note tells the parents all the wonderful things we learned during our poetry unit and invites them to sit down with their child and read each poem their child has written. The last week has been stressful to say the least. You may need a Virtual Spirit Week to make it a little less stressful and LOT more fun, especially for the kids. :) My daughter's school is doing something similar while they are closed. Parents are posting pictures on the school's Facebook page, but you could also have parents email you the photos, create your own private group on Facebook, or maybe even create a private Instagram and put the photos in your story for all the kids to see. Districts have different rules about using kids' pictures, so use it however you'd like, but have fun with it! You can grab the sample in the picture above HERE. Or use this EDITABLE version to come up with your own fun days! (or if you want to do it multiple weeks!)
