When negative behaviors start to increase, it is the most frustrating thing in the world. I've been there. This resource will help students feel intrinsic motivation to improve and think deeply about their behavior. Students will rate themselves each day on how well they meet classroom expectations; they will write a one paragraph personal reflection at the end of the week. Let students do the work by thinking about their actions and give them a front seat in their own behavior management and feel the personal maturity and classroom community thrive. Self-Assessment Focuses On: Being Prepared Being Respectful Being Responsible Reflection provides guiding questions to help students reflect and improve. This handout is a Google Doc, so it can be modified to fit your classroom expectations and shared with students digitally or printed. The goal is that students will take ownership of their behavior by self-assessing and reflecting. I hope it helps you have a successful year with your students! As my theme this year is "Music Around the World," I've been looking into lots of different folk songs from around the world. I found this little gem, Kokoleoko. I've found it in several different places, all slightly different versions. The version below is the most common, found in "Spotlight on Music, Grade 5," as well as several South American sources. If you change one note of this song (the f sharp to an a), it is a great recorder piece - using only the notes G-A-B-C, as shown in this example: The translation is pretty simple. Apparently "Kokoleoko" is just another way of saying "cock-a-doodle-doo," and "ahby" is "goodbye." Now, each source I find this song says something different about where exactly it's from. Most often, they say either Liberia or Ghana. So, I've just labeled it as a West African folk song to be more accurate. Anyway, this song is great for teaching the half note, which I do in 2nd grade. We spend awhile preparing, using songs that have half notes, before actually labeling what they are. This song is also great if you bring it back in the end of 3rd/beginning of 4th, or whenever you teach syncopation. There is a clapping game that goes with this. It looks more complicated than it actually is. My 2nd graders are challenged by this, but really enjoy doing it. You can watch an example below: I recently made a Teachers Pay Teachers product for this song that has rhythmic practice slides, melodic practice slides, clapping game instructions, and notation for both voice in the original version and recorder in the revised version. You can find it here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Search:kokoleoko There is even a great treble choral arrangement out there by Mary Donnelly and George Strid. Here's a cute recording I found of it on YouTube: Hope you can find use for this great song! My kids are absolutely loving it :)
The ability to juggle multiple projects with an infinite number of moving pieces is (I think) an essential skill for reducing the overwhelm that can come with academic life. In an ideal world, it would be lovely if this wasn’t a necessary skill for survival, but we live in the real world, with ever

Oceania is often an afterthought in many continent studies. Some people say that since it is strictly not a continent it should be left to later. This is an interesting supposition. Recently another continent called Zealandia has been found. I prefer to teach Oceania, not only because I live here in Oceania but because this whole area of the Pacific including Australia, is home to incredible diversity and features the best navigators in the world. On the following pages I’ve included reading passages and worksheets each grouped by area: Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. contents: *Oceania colour and b/w map *Australia introduction reading *Australia history reading * Australia landmarks reading * Australia worksheets x 2 * Melanesia reading * Melanesia landmarks * Melanesia worksheet x 1 * Polynesia introduction reading * Polynesia landmarks * Polynesia worksheet x 1 * Micronesia introduction reading * Micronesia landmarks *Micronesia worksheet x 1 *18 physical geography based question task cards with answers * 18 harder research question task cards 24 PAGES - PDF This is a Downloadable resource.

My Homecoming quilt pattern has been out in the world for a little over two months now! We are actually a few weeks into the Homecoming Quilt Along, which has been really fun. I had planned on blogging about these quilts sooner, but time got away from me and I never got around to it. But alas, I've finally taken the time to sit down and write out everything, so here it is! If you missed my original Homecoming Blog post, be sure to check that out. You can also see all of the lovely tester quilts from my pattern testers in this blog post. . . First up, lets talk about my two-color Homecoming quilt. This was actually my very first version of this design. One of the reasons why I love two color quilts is that the eye tends to focus more on the shapes and design of the quilt....which was my goal. Initially, I designed this quilt simply as a housewarming/
