The Reaching Olympus series uses classroom-tested Reader's Theater plays specifically designed for 6th-12th grade students to retell the great myths and legends of world mythology. Reader's Theater is an innovative and powerful teaching tool that allows students to break away from silent reading and share in an \"acting-out\" experience where words and myth come to life! Volume II of the Greek Myths in the Reaching Olympus series features eleven classic myths in interactive-script form, featuring the major events of the Trojan War (including the Iliad and Odyssey). Each play is prefaced by a teacher guide providing a synopsis of the myth, relevant background information and commentary on the myth, anticipatory questions for pre-play discussion, essential questions to help analyze the \"big ideas\" behind each myth, recall questions to check reading comprehension, and instructions for teaching commonly-tested terms and literary devices using each play. Supplemental materials include a Trojan War game, a Trojan War Find-It puzzle, a glossary of important characters, and a name pronunciation guide. Zachary Hamby is a professional author and illustrator and an experienced educator. He has spoken at many educational conferences (including the National Council of Teachers of English Convention) on the many benefits of using Reader's Theater in the secondary classroom. He is the author of two series that teach mythology to young people, the Reaching Olympus series and the Mythology for Teens series. He currently teaches high school in the Ozark mountains, where he lives with his wife and two children.

Today we worked on our culminating project for our Greek Mythology unit. The kids made trading cards for their favorite Greek characters. They had SO MUCH fun! Today the kids kept telling me, "Mrs. Shelby, this has been the best day ever!" I asked why and they said, "These trading cards are SO fun!" One of the kids told me that he appreciated the opportunity to "visualize" the characters we have talked about in class. Yes, he used those exact words! I was thrilled that he had actually been paying attention in Reading class all year and remembered that reading strategy. Kids say the funniest things. Anyway, here are a few pictures of what the kids came up with. We are going to finish the project tomorrow. Here are the directions for the Greek Mythology Trading Cards. This is actually included in my Greek Mythology unit, but I thought I would share this particular activity with you. The adorable graphics are from Melonheadz Illustrating. She does a fantastic job! She designed the clipart specifically for this unit and I could not be more pleased. To purchase my entire Greek Mythology unit that is aligned with the Common Core Standards, click here. The unit is actually on sale right now! :) Happy Thursday!

While these resources can often be used with Greco-Roman stories, they do not start from any particular cultural perspective and are open enough to use with any pantheon or selection of texts. Simple Timeline of Human History: This simple timeline of human history was produced to coincide with my Primary School Prehistory (Stone Age to Iron Age) school workshop. This timeline briefly charts 300,000 years of human history. We start in Prehistory, including the age(s) of stone (there were at least three, depending on where in the world you are) and continue through the Bronze Age and Iron Age in to... History (when people started writing things down) with the Romans, Saxons & Vikings and so on... The timeline has a UK focus and contains a selection of key notes and dates along the way, plus visual summary of the proportion of human history for which, we have relied on stone tool technology (hint: more than 99%)! This timeline is based on an image which is 5174 x 7306 pixels and a density of 96dpi. It is printed on high quality A3 Canon matte photo paper (170 GSM).
