NOTE: PRINTNSELL HAS HUNDREDS OF ORIGINAL PRE-WAR CIGARETTE CARD LOTS – ALL AT HALF BOOK PRICE AND UNDER. CHECK THEM OUT! --------------- Background Information Written by PrintnSell------------------ Tobacco Cards – or ‘Cigarette Cards’ as they are known in the UK – are beautiful (and currently surprisingly under-priced) little collectibles that have survived more than 80-plus years due to their favourite method of storage over the years in plastic sleeves, These now represent a truly great investment at current low prices and cover a wide ranges of collectible needs, from the extreme rarity of some cards to the range of different subject matter, or by company of issue. Originally issued one card per pack of cigarettes or sometimes tobacco pouches the cards were part of whole sets of each subject over some 25, 48 and most often 50 cards depending on the issuing company. Brand loyalty was the goal as ‘collecting fever’ guaranteed that more packs were purchased to try and complete a whole set, and often the frenzy extended well beyond the smokers themselves to the extent that swap clubs and collector societies became commonplace. The reign of the cigarette card extended from the late 1800‘s right through to their heyday in the 1930’s, with a diminishing number of companies maintaining the tradition following the Second World War and onwards through to the 50’s. The cards were issued in a very wide range of sets on both sides of the Atlantic. While many of the early American issues were hoarded away and reached high value accordingly, many of the UK ones from the 20’s and 30’s can still be obtained at extremely reasonable prices and represent an outstanding investment opportunity. These currently form the mainstay of the collecting hobby. Two factors to be careful of when buying elsewhere:- 1. Beware of reprinted sets offered by some other sellers either knowingly or un-knowingly. It must be stressed that all our own cards are very carefully vetted and guaranteed to be Originals Only. We have been trading in these cards for nearly five decades and have the full experience and depth of knowledge necessary to avoid any and all reproduction issues, which we immediately bin as a matter of course. 2. Be aware that later tea cards such as Brooke Bond and other trade cards are NOT cigarette cards, although often described as such by inexperienced sellers, and have much lower value – if any - being much more recent issues. Best to find a reputable dealer you know and trust and to stick with them.
